Chapter 4

Jayson appeared in my doorway just after midnight.

I didn't hear him approach. One moment I was alone at my desk, cross-referencing the final territory lease payment against Cataleya's Instagram post from three weeks ago, and the next his scent filled the room. Honeyed oak and pine, still laced with jasmine. Still wrong.

He stood in the threshold holding a glass of honeysuckle wine.

My preference. The one he'd ordered by the case when we first mated, back when he still noticed what I drank.

I didn't turn around. My hands stayed on the keyboard. The spreadsheet glowed on the screen in front of me — columns of numbers that would dismantle everything he'd built on my back.

"Madalyn," he said.

I saved the file. Closed the laptop. Only then did I glance over my shoulder.

He looked tired. The kind of tired that came from an Alpha's body finally registering what his mind refused to acknowledge. Dark circles under his eyes. Tension in his jaw. His wolf was hurting. I could see it in the way he held himself, slightly hunched, like something inside was trying to claw its way out.

Good.

"It's late," I said.

He stepped into the room. Not far. Just past the threshold. The wine glass caught the lamplight. "I thought we could talk."

"About what?"

He hesitated. The hesitation told me everything. He didn't know what he wanted to say. He just knew something had shifted and he couldn't read it anymore.

"About us," he said finally. "You've been... distant."

I almost laughed. Distant. Eight years of invisible labor, months of watching him parade another woman through the pack house, weeks of breathing air so saturated with her scent I could barely detect our bond — and now I was distant.

"We have the Retirement Ceremony in four days," I said. My voice was calm. Even. "You should rest."

"Madalyn—"

"Goodnight, Jayson."

I turned back to my desk. Opened the laptop again. The spreadsheet filled the screen. I heard him stand there. Five seconds. Ten. The wine glass made a soft sound as he set it on the side table near the door.

Then his footsteps retreated down the hall.

I pulled up my notes file and added a timestamp: *12:17 AM. First re-engagement attempt. Honeysuckle wine. Dismissed.*

My wolf stirred. She wasn't sad. She was satisfied.

Two days before the Retirement Ceremony, Cataleya made her worst mistake.

I was reviewing the final evidence folder when my phone buzzed. A notification from the pack's social monitoring app — the one I'd set up years ago to track public mentions of Silverfang. Normally it caught regional news articles or alliance announcements.

This time it caught Cataleya.

I opened the alert. Her Instagram post loaded on my screen. The image was taken in the Luna suite's full-length mirror — the ornate one with the silver frame, positioned in the corner where morning light made everything glow. She stood in profile, head tilted, one hand lifting the Luna heirloom necklace away from her throat so the sapphires caught the light.

The caption read: *when he says you deserve the best 💎*

The post was geotagged. Silverfang Pack House.

I stared at the necklace. Three strands of white gold. Sapphires the color of deep water. The Luna heirloom, passed down through four generations of Tucker family mates. I'd worn it exactly once — at my own mating ceremony, eight years ago. Afterward, it had gone back into the vault. The access log required Luna-level authorization.

I pulled up the vault's digital inventory. Scrolled to the necklace entry. Last authorized access: *Madalyn Mitchell, Luna. Date: Mating Ceremony.*

No record of a second access.

Which meant Jayson had given her his override code.

I took a screenshot of Cataleya's post. Saved the vault log. Added both files to the evidence folder under a new tab: *Heirloom Misappropriation.*

The post already had three hundred responses. Pack-adjacent accounts. Neighboring territories. Wolves who didn't know Cataleya wasn't Luna but were congratulating her anyway.

I closed the app. My hands were steady. My wolf was silent.

But something cold and final settled in my chest.

On the morning of the Retirement Ceremony, I entered Jayson's office while he was at the Alpha briefing.

The room smelled like him. Oak and pine, faint now, the scent markers fading. His desk was cluttered — reports, territorial maps, a half-empty coffee mug. And on the corner, in a simple black frame, the photograph.

Cataleya. Laughing. Her head thrown back, hair catching sunlight. The image I'd seen a dozen times, the one he kept where he could look at it whenever he wanted.

I picked up the frame. Studied it for a moment. She looked happy. Uncomplicated. The kind of happy that came from not carrying anything.

I placed the frame in my bag. Closed the office door behind me.

Back in my room, I dressed in full Luna ceremonial attire. The formal gown — deep blue, almost black, with silver embroidery along the bodice. The Tucker family crest stitched at the shoulder. I pinned my hair back. Applied minimal makeup. Fastened the small silver wolf-head earrings my mother had given me.

I looked like a Luna. Composed. Authoritative. Untouchable.

I opened my laptop one final time. The evidence folder sat on the desktop. I clicked through each tab. Financial records. Social media documentation. Vault logs. Ellis's corroborated testimony, documented in my notes. Lola's legal framework, encrypted and ready.

Everything was in order.

I closed the laptop. Picked up my bag. The framed photograph sat inside, wrapped in tissue paper.

I walked downstairs. The pack house was quiet. Most wolves had already left for the Ceremony venue. Jayson's car was gone from the driveway.

I got into my own car. Started the engine. The road to the Ceremony hall stretched ahead, familiar and final.

My wolf stirred. Not anxious. Not grieving.

Ready.

I drove toward the end of everything Jayson Tucker thought he'd built.

And the beginning of what I was about to take back.
