After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me Chapter 1

I stood outside the Ironridge pack hall and pressed my thumb into my palm. Hard. The pain helped. It reminded me I was real, that this was happening, that ten years of waiting were about to mean something.

The dress I'd chosen was deep blue, simple but elegant. Lucy had helped me pick it out last week. She'd said it brought out my eyes. I hoped Corey would think so too. My wolf stirred inside me, restless and eager. She'd been like this for days, pacing, whining, pushing at the edges of my control. She knew. We both knew. Tonight was the night he would finally say it.

The hall doors were already open. Warm light spilled out onto the stone steps. I could hear music, laughter, the low hum of conversation from inside. Three packs had gathered for this—Silvercrest, Ironridge, and Crescentmoor. Corey's Alpha Ascension Banquet was a big deal. The future Alpha of Ironridge officially stepping into his role. I'd been invited, of course. We were childhood friends. Best friends, even if lately he'd been distant. Busy with Alpha training, I'd told myself. Preparing for tonight.

I climbed the steps. My heart hammered so hard I thought everyone would hear it.

Inside, the hall was packed. Wolves everywhere, dressed in their best, drinks in hand, talking and laughing in tight clusters. The Crescentmoor wolves were easy to spot—they carried themselves differently, like they knew they were better than everyone else. The Silvercrest wolves looked more relaxed, familiar. And the Ironridge wolves moved through the crowd with the easy confidence of hosts.

I scanned the room for Corey. It took me a minute to find him. He was at the center of the hall, standing on a raised platform near the head table. And he wasn't alone.

Amora Griffin stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on his arm. She was beautiful in that sharp, polished way—dark hair perfectly styled, dress expensive and fitted, smile bright and cold. She'd transferred from Crescentmoor a few months ago. High-ranking family. Everyone talked about how impressive she was.

I stopped moving. My wolf went still inside me.

Corey raised his glass. The room quieted. He smiled—that easy, charismatic smile I'd loved since we were kids—and spoke in a voice that carried effortlessly across the hall.

"Thank you all for being here tonight. This is a huge honor, and I'm grateful to have the support of three incredible packs as I step into my role as Alpha of Ironridge." He paused, his gaze sweeping the crowd. It passed over me without stopping. "There's someone I want you all to meet. Someone very special to me."

He turned to Amora. She smiled up at him, and he pulled her closer.

"This is Amora Griffin, my girlfriend."

The word hit me like a fist to the chest. Girlfriend. Not mate. Not bond. Girlfriend.

The room erupted in polite applause. Wolves smiled, nodded, raised their glasses. I stood frozen in the middle of the crowd, my hands numb at my sides.

Amora stepped forward, her smile widening. She looked directly at me. I felt the weight of her gaze like a physical thing.

"Actually," she said, her voice sweet and clear, "there's something I think everyone should know."

The room went quiet again. Curious. Expectant.

Amora reached into her small clutch and pulled out something small and silver—a bonding token. The kind used in mate ceremonies. She held it up for everyone to see.

"Hadlee Bennett," she said, turning to face me fully now. "You've been receiving mind-link messages for months, haven't you? Late at night. Intimate messages. You thought they were from Corey's wolf, reaching toward yours."

My stomach dropped. My wolf whimpered.

"They weren't," Amora continued, her tone light, almost playful. "I sent them. Using this." She dangled the token. "I mimicked his mental signature. Every single message. Every word. It was so easy."

Laughter rippled through sections of the crowd. Not everyone—some wolves looked uncomfortable, uncertain—but enough. Enough that the sound surrounded me, pressed in on me from all sides.

I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. My carefully constructed reality—the one I'd built message by message, hope by hope—collapsed in real time.

Corey stepped forward. His expression was flat. Cold. His Alpha aura flared, deliberate and commanding, and I felt it like a weight pressing down on my chest.

"I, Corey Lawson, future Alpha of Ironridge Pack, reject you, Hadlee Bennett, as my mate."

The bond tore.

It wasn't metaphor. It wasn't emotional pain dressed up in dramatic language. It was physical. Spiritual. The mate bond—the thing my wolf had recognized at sixteen, the thing I'd guarded and nurtured and waited for him to acknowledge—ripped through my body like a blade dragged slowly through flesh.

I dropped to my knees. The floor was cold and hard beneath me. My wolf screamed inside my mind, a sound of pure agony, and I couldn't stop the sob that tore from my throat.

The room blurred. Voices swam around me, distant and meaningless. I pressed my hands to the floor, trying to ground myself, trying to breathe through the pain.

And then I smelled it.

Rare moonflower and ancient frost.

The scent crashed over me like a tidal wave, overwhelming and absolute. My wolf went silent mid-scream. The air pressure in the hall shifted. I felt it in my bones, in the sudden stillness that fell over the crowd.

Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate.

I looked up.

Maximus Morgan stepped from the shadows at the edge of the hall. I knew him—Kara's cousin, my quiet training partner. He was always around, always watching, always still. But now he moved with a purpose that made every wolf in the room turn to look.

He released his aura.

It wasn't like Corey's. It wasn't even like the Alphas I'd met from other packs. It was something else entirely—massive, ancient, undeniable. Every Alpha in the room lowered their eyes. I saw Corey's father, the current Ironridge Alpha, take an instinctive step back.

Maximus stopped in front of Corey. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"You are a disgrace," he said quietly. "Unfit to lead wolves."

Then he turned to me. His eyes—silver-gray, bottomless—met mine. He crouched down, and without a word, he lifted me into his arms.

I curled instinctively toward his chest. The moonflower scent surrounded me, soothing, undeniable. My wolf, broken and bleeding, reached toward it like a lifeline.

Maximus carried me out of the banquet hall. No one stopped him. No one spoke.

And I didn't look back.
