Chapter 2

They had me on my knees in the war room before I even saw his face.

Two Deltas, both bigger than me, both with hands that knew exactly how much pressure to apply without leaving marks. Zip ties at my wrists. A knee in my back when I'd tried to turn around at the checkpoint. Standard protocol for a lone she-wolf crossing from Shadowridge territory at dawn, smelling like their pack house and carrying nothing but a duffel bag and a story.

I didn't fight it. Fighting would have been stupid, and I had not come this far to be stupid.

The war room was functional and cold — maps on the walls, a long table scarred from use, overhead lights that didn't flatter anyone. Alpha Cade Jacobs stood at the far end of the table with his arms crossed and studied me the way you study something you haven't categorized yet. He was younger than I'd expected. Broad through the shoulders, dark eyes, a stillness about him that reminded me, uncomfortably, of the way I go still when I'm deciding something.

He didn't speak for a long moment. Just looked.

I looked back.

"Shadowridge," he said finally. Not a question.

"Former," I said. "As of approximately four hours ago."

One of the Deltas tightened his grip on my shoulder. Cade raised one hand, barely a gesture, and the grip loosened.

"Talk," he said.

So I did. Wrists bound, kneeling on a stone floor, I laid it out in the same order I'd rehearsed it in my head during the three-hour walk through the tree line. The blood oath my parents signed without my consent. The exit clause — ten million in pack tribute or rogue branding, no third option. The Mate Ceremony the night before, the scent I'd caught, the eyes that had gone straight past me to Holly Spencer. The hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer. The service entrance. The border crossing.

I stated facts. I did not editorialize. I did not ask for sympathy.

When I finished, the room was quiet except for the low hum of the overhead lights.

Cade uncrossed his arms. He walked around the end of the table, unhurried, and crouched down in front of me so we were at eye level. Up close, his expression was unreadable in a way that felt deliberate — not blank, but controlled. He was deciding something.

"You sold your ceremonial night to the woman your mate is in love with," he said. "For a hundred thousand dollars. On the night of the ceremony."

"Yes."

"And then you walked to my border."

"I had a plan. I needed a starting point."

Something shifted in his expression. Not quite a smile. More like the moment before one. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a folding knife, and cut the zip ties.

The plastic fell to the floor. I didn't rub my wrists. I just waited.

"Sit down," he said, and stood up, moving back to his side of the table.

I sat.

He pulled out a chair across from me and sat too, and for the first time since the checkpoint it felt less like an interrogation and more like a meeting. He laced his fingers together on the table and looked at me steadily.

"Here's what I'm willing to offer," he said. "Warrior training, full access to Ironvale's combat program. Pack housing — a bunk in the Delta quarters until you earn a rank assignment. And a path to the ten million. Combat ranking bonuses are paid in certified pack bonds. Strategic consulting fees, same. You work, you earn, you build the tribute from the ground up. When you have enough, you walk away clean."

I kept my face neutral. Inside, something that had been wound very tight for three months loosened, just slightly.

"In exchange," he continued, "you give me everything you know about Shadowridge. Internal politics. Alliance structures. Elias's tactical patterns — how he moves, how he negotiates, where he's overextended. You were inside that pack house. You've been watching them for months. That intelligence has value."

"It does," I agreed.

"I'm not asking you to betray anyone who was loyal to you."

"No one in Shadowridge was loyal to me."

He held my gaze for a moment. Then he nodded, once, like that answer had confirmed something. He slid a single sheet of paper across the table — the alliance agreement, already drafted, which told me he had been considering this possibility before I walked through his door. Either he had very good border scouts, or he was the kind of Alpha who prepared for contingencies he hadn't anticipated yet. Both options were reassuring.

I read it. All of it, every clause, while he waited without impatience. The terms were exactly what he'd said — no hidden penalties, no loyalty oath that would compromise my ability to reject the Shadowridge bond, no clause that transferred my debt to Ironvale if I failed to earn the tribute. It was a clean agreement. Fairer than anything I'd been offered in my own pack.

I picked up the pen he'd set beside it and signed.

He signed his side, folded his copy, and set it aside. Then he reached to his left and slid something else across the table. A printed training schedule, dense with times and locations, Ironvale's combat program laid out in five-thirty AM increments.

"You start at dawn," he said. "Nora Voss runs the morning drills. Tell her I sent you. She'll push you harder than you think you can handle."

"Good," I said.

He looked at me for a moment with that same unreadable expression. Then, quietly: "Elias is going to come looking."

"I know."

"When he does, it becomes my problem too."

"I know that as well. It's in the agreement — Ironvale's right to invoke alliance law on my behalf in any inter-pack dispute arising from the blood oath." I met his eyes. "I read every clause."

This time the almost-smile made it all the way. Brief, but real. "Get some sleep," he said. "You've got about three hours before Nora starts wondering why her new Delta is late."

I stood, picked up the training schedule, and folded it into my jacket pocket — next to the blood oath document, which had been there so long the creases were worn white.

At the door, I paused. "Thank you," I said. Not because it was expected. Because it was true.

Cade had already turned back to his maps. "Don't thank me yet," he said. "Thank me when you've got ten million in pack bonds and Elias Montgomery is standing outside your door in the rain."

I didn't answer that. But I filed it away.

I went to find my bunk, and I did not sleep, and at five-fifteen I was already standing at the edge of the training field in the gray pre-dawn cold, waiting for Nora Voss to tell me what I couldn't handle.
