Chapter 1

I wore the pale grey dress. The same one I had worn to every Mate Ceremony for the last six years. Simple neckline. No jewelry. Nothing that would pull attention away from the Alpha and his pack.

That was my job. To be quiet. To be useful. To be Luna without the title.

I stood in the second row of the gathering circle, right where an unranked mate belonged. The clearing behind the Silverfang packhouse was strung with lanterns, and the moon sat fat and full above the pines. Around me, wolves murmured and laughed and clinked glasses. Someone bumped my elbow and apologized without looking. I smiled at nothing in particular.

Trevor stepped up onto the ceremonial platform. My mate. My Alpha. The father of my son.

He looked handsome the way he always did on ceremony nights—dark suit, hair combed back, that easy Alpha smile that had made me fall for him twelve years ago in a college parking lot. I felt the familiar pull of the bond in my chest, warm and dumb and loyal.

He cleared his throat. The clearing went quiet.

"Tonight," he said, "the Silverfang Pack witnesses a truth long overdue."

I blinked. That was not the opening line I had helped him rehearse last week.

His eyes found mine across the crowd. Held them.

"I, Trevor Cole, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Charlotte, as my mate and Luna."

The words did not register at first. They arrived one at a time, out of order, like someone had dropped them and I had to pick them up.

Then the bond snapped.

It was not a metaphor. There was an actual sound in my chest, a low internal crack, and after it came the pain. White pain. Silver-in-the-veins pain. My knees tried to buckle and I locked them because I had spent six years learning how not to make a scene.

Trevor was still talking.

"—and I take Freya Wagner, daughter of the Ironvale Pack, as my chosen Luna."

Freya. My Freya. My best friend since I was nineteen. She stepped up beside him in a white dress that fit her the way mine had never fit me, and she rested her hand on his forearm like she had done it a hundred times before. Because, I realized, she probably had.

Her eyes met mine over his shoulder. She did not look sorry. She looked like she was memorizing my face.

Someone in the crowd gasped. Someone else pulled out a phone. I could see the little red recording dot from where I stood. I noted it distantly, the way you note that a lamp is on.

And then Joey pushed through the front row.

My son. My fifteen-year-old boy. Coltish, angry-jawed, standing there in a jacket I had bought him last month.

"Leave," he snarled at me. Actually snarled, the way pups do when they are performing for a room. "You heard him. Leave. Freya is my real Luna mother. Not you. You were never really anything."

The clearing went so quiet I could hear the lanterns hiss.

Something inside me went very still. Not calm. Not shocked. Just… still. The way water goes still right before it freezes.

I did not cry. I did not speak. I looked at Trevor. I looked at Freya. I looked at my son.

And then I turned and walked out of the circle.

No one stopped me. No one said my name. My heels crunched over gravel toward the packhouse, and somewhere behind me the ceremony resumed, quieter now, the way people talk after a car crash.

The pack office was empty. I sat down at the desk where I had approved supply orders and warrior schedules for six years, opened the drawer where the severance paperwork was kept, and filled it out. Name. Rank—Luna, unranked. Reason for severance—Alpha's rejection. Signature.

My hand did not shake. That surprised me a little.

I left everything. The photo on the desk of Joey at eight years old. The mug Freya had given me for my birthday. The house keys on the ring in my purse. I walked out to my car in the grey dress and I drove.

I drove all night. I did not turn on music. The bond-pain in my chest faded slowly from silver to iron to a low, dull ache that I understood would never fully leave. Somewhere around the Nevada line I stopped crying without noticing I had started.

The Blackwood Lycan estate rose out of the pines just before dawn, the same as it had risen in my memory for six years. Stone. Wrought iron. Windows lit warm.

I parked. Walked up the steps.

The door opened before my hand reached the wood.

My father stood in the doorway in a dressing gown, silver-haired, unhurried, the Lycan King in slippers. He looked at me on the threshold—no possessions, no coat, mascara streaked, one earring missing that I did not remember losing.

He did not say anything unnecessary.

"Come home, Charlotte," he said.

And he stepped aside.

---

My childhood bedroom was exactly as I had left it. The bookshelf. The stuffed wolf on the pillow. The blue quilt my mother had made before she died.

I sat down on the edge of the bed. I looked at the clock on the wall.

One hour, I told myself. You get one hour.

I closed my eyes.

The bond-pain pulsed. Joey's snarl replayed. Freya's smirk hung in the dark behind my eyelids like an afterimage.

I let it come. All of it. For sixty minutes I sat perfectly still and I let it move through me.

When the clock ticked over, I opened my eyes. Pressed my palms flat against my knees.

And began, in my head, to make the list of everyone I was going to destroy.
