Chapter 2

I slept four hours. Maybe five. When I woke, the blue quilt was twisted around my legs and the stuffed wolf had fallen off the pillow onto the floor. I left it there.

My father's study was at the end of the east corridor, past the portraits of every Lycan King who had ruled before him. I had walked that hall a thousand times as a child. I walked it now in borrowed clothes—one of my old sweaters from the closet, dark jeans that still fit—and I did not look at the portraits.

I knocked. Nathaniel said come in.

He was behind his desk, already dressed, a cup of tea steaming at his elbow. He looked like he had slept eight hours and enjoyed every one of them. The morning light caught the silver in his hair and made him look like exactly what he was: a king who had never once doubted himself.

"Sit down, Charlotte."

I sat. There was a second chair already angled toward the desk. Someone had placed a cup of tea at the spot in front of it. My mug. The blue one from my childhood, with the chipped handle. He had kept it.

I wrapped both hands around it and did not say anything about that.

"I'm assigning you a protector," Nathaniel said. "Personal. Strategic. Someone you can trust completely." He paused, the way he always paused when he already knew the outcome. "His name is Eli Graham. My Beta."

The door behind me opened.

The scent hit me before I turned around.

Dark cedar. Rain on hot stone. Something underneath both of those things that had no name and did not need one.

My dormant wolf—silent for six years, buried so deep I had almost stopped believing she was still there—lurched awake like something surfacing from cold water. My breath caught. My fingers tightened on the mug.

I turned.

He was tall. Dark-haired. The kind of still that large, powerful things go when they are being careful. A scar along his left jaw, faint in the morning light. He stood at attention near the door with his hands loose at his sides, and his eyes—dark, steady—found mine without any performance in them.

The word arrived in my chest before my mind caught up to it.

Mate.

I felt it land in him too. A barely visible thing: his jaw tightened, one small muscle near the hinge. That was all. His face gave nothing else away.

I looked at him for exactly two seconds. Then I set my mug down and turned back to my father.

"Fine," I said.

Nathaniel's expression did not change. He was very good at that.

Eli crossed the room and took the second chair. His scent moved with him. Cedar and rain, filling every cubic inch of air between us, and my wolf pressed against the inside of my ribs like she wanted to walk through my skin.

I kept my face still. I was very good at that too.

"Whatever you need, Princess," Eli said. His voice was low and even. "I'm here."

He did not push. He did not lean toward me. He sat with the same careful stillness he had walked in with, and he looked at my father's desk map of the Ironvale territory like that was the only thing in the room that mattered.

I told myself it was fine. I told myself I had handled worse in the last forty-eight hours than a scent bond with a man I had just met.

I picked up my tea and started talking about Ironvale's eastern alliance corridor.

---

The video was everywhere by the second day.

Somebody in the Silverfang Pack—junior member, shaky phone, clearly standing three rows back—had live-streamed the entire ceremony. Trevor's voice, crisp and carrying. The snap of silence that followed. Joey stepping forward in the jacket I had bought him.

I watched it once. Alone in my room, phone flat in my palm, the sound low enough that I had to lean in.

I watched my own face in the crowd. The stillness. The locked knees. The two seconds before I turned and walked away.

I set the phone face-down on the mattress.

I did not watch it again.

By the third day, my known contact channels were flooded. She-wolves from packs I had never visited, sending messages in the particular tone of women who recognized something. *We see you. You deserved better. Who is the Beta?*

That last one appeared more than once.

I did not answer any of them. But I read them. Late at night, when the estate was quiet and the bond-ache in my chest had settled into its new permanent frequency, I read every single one.

---

Eli was always there.

At the briefings. At meals. In the corridor outside the study when I came out at midnight to pace the grounds because I could not sit still long enough to sleep. His cedar-and-rain scent preceded him into every room like a warning I could not train myself to stop noticing.

On the third day I snapped.

"I need the Ironvale trade records cross-referenced with the eastern pack ledgers," I said, not looking up from the map. "Go find Marcus. He has the physical copies."

Eli looked at me for one beat. "Marcus is in the training yard. I can pull the digital—"

"I said go find Marcus."

A pause. "Understood."

He left. The door closed quietly behind him.

I stood at the map table and stared at the Ironvale territory markers and could not remember what I had been thinking about before he walked in. The scent lingered. Cedar and rain, soaked into the room's air, and my wolf paced in slow, furious circles.

I pressed my fingertips hard against the table edge.

Fifteen minutes later I heard his footsteps in the corridor. Even, unhurried, coming back.

My wolf went still.

I picked up my pen and found my place on the map and did not examine what that meant.
