When My Husband’s Mistress Replaced Me on the Ice Chapter 1

The fiberglass cast on my right leg felt like lead. Every time I swung my crutches forward, the rubber tips squeaked against the hardwood floor.

Two weeks ago, my blade caught a rut during a triple Axel practice. My tibia snapped with a crack that echoed across the empty rink.

Since then, my husband, Colson, had turned our home into a padded cage. He canceled my press interviews. He hired private physical therapists. He answered my phone calls for me.

"You need total quiet, Teagan," he told me every morning, kissing my forehead. "Let me carry the world for a while."

He played the part of the devoted husband to perfection. But small things were slipping through the cracks.

Danna Ruiz, our twenty-two-year-old live-in nanny, was supposed to look after the house. Lately, though, she left before dawn. Her duffel bag smelled like fresh ice and leather skate guards. Then there were Colson’s phone calls. Three times this week, he stepped into his home office and clicked the lock shut. Through the thick wood, his voice sounded low and sharp.

I didn’t ask him about it. Not yet. On the ice, when you lose your balance, you don't flail. You wait for your edge to catch.

At noon, Colson left to pick up my pain medication.

I sat on the living room sofa and opened my laptop. I pulled up the official roster for the U.S. Figure Skating Grand Prix qualifier. My name should have been in the top seed.

It wasn't there.

I stared at the screen. In my place, under the Harper Academy banner, was a new name: *Danna Ruiz.*

Beside it, the official note read: *Late-entry replacement due to incumbent athlete's medical withdrawal.*

I clicked on the filing details and checked the timestamp.

The withdrawal form had been submitted eleven days ago at nine in the morning. Eleven days ago, I was still in the hospital bed, drifting in and out of a morphine haze. Nobody had asked me to sign anything. Nobody had told me a thing.

The front door opened.

Colson walked in, carrying a white pharmacy bag. He wore a crisp gray sweater, looking tall, handsome, and calm.

"Got your refills, sweetheart," he said, setting the bag on the counter. "How is the leg feeling?"

I kept my eyes on him. I turned the laptop screen toward him.

"Why is Danna skating my slot in Seattle?" I asked.

Colson didn't jump. He didn't even blink. He just set his car keys in the dish and let out a long, heavy sigh. He walked over, knelt by my sofa, and reached for my hands. I kept my fingers flat on my lap.

He rested his hand on my forearm instead. His touch was warm.

"I was going to tell you tonight," he said. His voice was thick with regret. "The federation called last week. They were going to strip the academy's seed entirely because of your injury. I begged them, Teagan. I spent three hours on the phone with Warren Pike, screaming until I was hoarse. I filed a formal protest."

"You filed a medical withdrawal in my name," I said quietly.

"To protect your ranking," he said quickly. He looked right into my eyes. His expression was full of gentle ache. "If you forfeit on competition day, your international standing drops. If we withdraw you on medical grounds, you freeze your points. And Danna... well, the academy had to put someone on the ice to keep the sponsor funding alive. You know how tight money is since your father passed."

He squeezed my arm. "I did it for you, Teagan. I did it to protect what Preston built."

For four years, I had believed that voice. I had believed he was my rock.

But sitting there, looking at his dark eyes, I heard something else beneath the tenderness. It was flat. It was clinical. It was the tone of a man adjusting numbers on a spreadsheet, managing a variable that had gotten out of line.

He didn't fight the federation. He gave my slot away.

My heart hammered against my ribs, cold and fast. I did not yell. I did not pull my arm away.

I gave him a faint, tired smile. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I guess... the pain meds make me paranoid."

Colson’s shoulders relaxed. The warmth returned to his face. "It's okay, baby. Just focus on healing. Leave the politics to me."

He kissed my cheek and went into the kitchen to pour some water.

That night, I waited.

Colson fell asleep around eleven. His breathing turned slow and deep beside me.

I slipped out from under the covers. I didn't use my crutches; the clicking would wake him. I hopped on my left foot, bracing my hands against the hallway wall, inch by inch, until I reached his study.

The door was locked, but the spare key was taped under the bottom shelf of the hall table. I unlocked the door and clicked it shut behind me.

Colson’s old black laptop sat on the mahogany desk. I pressed the power button.

The screen glowed white, then prompted for an encrypted security key. It wasn't a standard Windows password. It was a custom, thirty-two-character hardware encryption.

I took out my phone and snapped a clear photo of the software version and the drive ID.

I locked the office, made my way downstairs to the kitchen, and sat at the table in the dark.

I pulled out a blank notepad. With a black pen, I began to write.

*Loose blade screws at morning practice.*

*Colson insisting I switch to his private physical therapist.*

*The car accident that killed Dad on the overpass—Colson handling the insurance payout alone.*

*My birth control pills tasting slightly chalky last month.*

One by one, I wrote down every small thing I had ignored because I loved him. The ink soaked into the paper. The list filled the entire page.

My hands didn't shake.

I opened a hidden messaging app on my phone. I typed a name from my old sponsorship days—Rowan Beckett. The best data recovery specialist in the city.

*I need a drive cracked,* I texted him. *And I need a burner phone delivered somewhere my husband can't see.*

Rowan’s reply came three minutes later: *Name the place.*

I looked out the kitchen window into the black night.

"Seattle," I whispered.
