Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Chapter 1

The silk of my ceremonial Luna dress felt heavier than usual as I stood before the gathered pack, the white fabric catching the moonlight streaming through the great hall's windows. Eight years. Eight years since Harrison had marked me as his Luna, and tonight was supposed to celebrate that bond, that sacred connection that had once felt like destiny.

But the weight in my chest had nothing to do with the dress.

Harrison stood beside me on the raised platform, his Alpha presence commanding as always, but his attention kept drifting. I followed his gaze and felt my stomach clench. Helen Ferguson sat in the front row, her auburn hair gleaming like fire, her emerald dress a stark contrast to my traditional white. She watched us with those calculating green eyes, a small smile playing at her lips.

"Luna Mallory has served our pack faithfully for eight years," Harrison's voice boomed across the hall, but even I could hear the mechanical tone, the lack of warmth that had once colored his words when he spoke of me. "Tonight, we honor that dedication."

The pack members nodded respectfully, but I caught the sideways glances, the whispered conversations that died when I looked their way. They all knew. They all saw how Harrison looked at Helen, how he sought her counsel, how she had slowly but surely inserted herself into every aspect of pack life.

"However," Helen's voice cut through the ceremonial atmosphere like a blade, sweet and innocent but carrying just enough volume for everyone to hear, "I do hope you don't mind me saying, Alpha Harrison, but isn't white considered unlucky for the pack during moon ceremonies?"

The hall fell silent. I felt every eye turn to me, felt the weight of their stares like physical blows. My fingers trembled as they gripped the flowing skirt of my dress – the same dress I had worn for every anniversary, the one Harrison had once said made me look like moonlight incarnate.

Harrison's jaw tightened, and for a moment, I hoped – desperately, foolishly hoped – that he would defend me, defend our tradition, defend the significance of this dress that had been his grandmother's before it was mine.

Instead, he turned to face me fully, his dark eyes cold and distant. "Helen raises a valid concern," he said, his Alpha tone making the words feel like a command rather than a conversation. "Perhaps it would be best if you changed into something more... appropriate for the occasion."

The breath left my lungs in a rush. Around us, pack members shifted uncomfortably, some looking away as if they couldn't bear to witness what was happening. Beta Marcus Reed stood near the back, his face a mask of barely controlled anger, but he said nothing. No one said anything.

"Harrison," I whispered, my voice barely audible even to my own ears. "This dress... it's tradition. Your grandmother wore it, and your mother, and—"

"I said remove it, Mallory." His voice carried the full weight of his Alpha authority now, pressing down on me like a physical force. My wolf whimpered inside me, cowering under the dominance that had once felt protective but now felt like a cage. "The pack's wellbeing comes before personal sentiment."

Helen's smile widened just a fraction, her eyes glittering with triumph. She had orchestrated this perfectly, turning my most sacred moment into my greatest humiliation with just a few carefully chosen words.

My hands shook as I reached for the delicate clasps at my shoulders. The silk whispered against my skin as I let the ceremonial dress pool at my feet, leaving me standing in just the simple slip underneath. The white fabric lay crumpled on the platform like a discarded dream, and I felt something inside me crumble along with it.

The pack watched in stunned silence as Harrison stepped forward, not to comfort me or help me, but to kick the dress aside with his boot. "Helen," he said, his voice warming for the first time all evening, "would you do us the honor of explaining the proper protocols for future ceremonies?"

She rose gracefully from her seat, practically glowing under his attention. "Of course, Alpha. I'd be happy to help guide the pack toward more... prosperous traditions."

As Helen glided up to the platform, her hand sliding possessively along Harrison's arm, I stood there in my undergarments before my entire pack – the pack I had served, protected, and loved for eight years. The cold air raised goosebumps along my exposed skin, but the chill in my heart ran far deeper.

Harrison's voice carried across the hall as he made his next announcement, each word driving another nail into the coffin of my dignity. "From this point forward, Helen will be taking on expanded responsibilities within the pack leadership. She has shown remarkable insight into our traditions and will be helping to guide us toward a more prosperous future."

The implications hung heavy in the air. I was being replaced, piece by piece, moment by moment, in front of everyone who had once looked to me as their Luna. And Harrison – my mate, my Alpha, the man who had sworn to cherish and protect me – stood there beside my replacement, his hand now resting on the small of Helen's back as she beamed at the assembled pack.

I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to preserve what little dignity I had left, as Helen began to speak about "new traditions" and "fresh perspectives." Her voice was honey-sweet, but her eyes found mine across the platform, and in them, I saw the cold calculation of a predator who had successfully cornered her prey.
