Chapter 3

The office felt different on Friday night. The city lights filtered through the blinds, casting striped shadows across Vivienne's face as she hunched over my laptop. Three empty coffee cups sat on the conference table, testament to our twelve-hour marathon of forensic accounting. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, the soft clicking a steady rhythm of discovery.

I watched her work, this woman who had been my friend for a decade, who was now my general in a war I never wanted to fight. Her hair had fallen loose from its usual perfect bun, and there was a smudge of ink on her cheek. She looked up, eyes bloodshot but bright with purpose.

'Eden, I found the pattern.' Her voice carried the quiet triumph of a detective solving a cold case. 'It's elegant, actually. That's what makes it so insidious.' She turned the screen toward me. 'He created three separate channels. Look.'

She pulled up a spreadsheet that looked like a spider's web of numbers and dates. My company's money—our money—flowing out through Marcus Garza's LLC, then branching into two separate destinations: a trust fund in Talon's name and the Brooklyn brownstone's purchase and renovation costs.

'Two point five million dollars,' Vivienne said softly. 'All diverted over seven years. The consulting fees were genius—he could have hidden another million if I hadn't been looking for it.' She tapped a cell highlighted in red. 'This is the first transfer. The week Talon was born.'

My hand found the edge of the table, steadying myself. The week I had been in that clinic, grieving the child I thought we had agreed not to have. The child he had convinced me would destroy our singular love, our pure partnership.

'There's more,' Vivienne continued, sliding a folder across the table. 'I cross-referenced the dates with your personal calendar. Every major transfer coincided with one of your business trips. He used your absences as cover.'

I opened the folder. Side by side, my travel itineraries and the financial transfers. Tokyo, London, Singapore—the cities where I had closed deals that built our empire, while he was building another life entirely.

I closed the folder without expression. 'Prepare a board-ready presentation. Clean, clinical, irrefutable.' My voice sounded foreign to my own ears. 'And Viv—make three copies. We'll need them for Monday.'

Saturday morning, I wore the perfect wife mask. I made Keith's breakfast—Belgian waffles with fresh berries, the way he liked them. I smiled at his jokes about the Henderson account. I was grace itself, a portrait of devotion.

While he showered, I called Julian Vance. His phone rang twice.

'Eden.' His voice was alert, despite the early hour. 'You have something.' It wasn't a question.

'I need to execute clause sixteen of our partnership agreement,' I said. 'The one about unilateral spending authority.' I paused. 'And I need to freeze the Garza accounts immediately.'

'The board will ask questions.'

'Then we'll give them answers. But not yet. Not until everything is in place.'

There was a moment of silence. Then: 'Done. I'll have the paperwork ready by noon.'

By Sunday evening, I had met with three board members individually—the ones who had been with us from the beginning, the ones who remembered when I was the financial architect and Keith was the charming face. I showed them only pieces of what I knew. Enough to secure their support for the emergency measures. Enough to ensure that when the full story broke, they would already be on my side.

Monday morning, while Keith prepared for his weekly executive briefing, I sat in my car in the parking garage and used my administrator credentials to access his office computer remotely. I had created these credentials when we founded the company, a contingency measure I never thought I'd use.

The desktop loaded. I navigated to his private folder—the one he thought was secure. There, among the ordinary files, was a document dated three weeks ago. A will, prepared by a private estate attorney. I opened it.

The language was clinical, but the intent was crystal clear: upon his death, the majority of Keith's estate would pass to Scottie Garza and Talon Richardson, with a token sum—barely more than a legal minimum—left to me. It was the final piece, the ultimate betrayal. Not just a life built on lies, but a future planned entirely without me.

I forwarded the document to Julian with a single line: 'This is the nuclear option.'

As I sent it, I felt something shift inside me. The grief that had been a cold weight in my chest began to crystallize into something harder, something with edges. I closed my laptop and looked up at the building where, in a few hours, I would face my husband as if nothing had changed.

But everything had changed. And soon, everyone would know it.
