Chapter 4

Dinner was lamb chops and Pinot Noir, the kind of meal Keith always ordered when he wanted something. I watched him across the table, studying the way he held his glass—thumb and forefinger pinched at the stem, the way he'd held it for fifteen years. Every gesture familiar. Every gesture a lie.

I took a sip of wine, letting the tannins coat my tongue as I waited for him to begin. He didn't disappoint.

'There's this charity networking event,' he said, his voice warm honey. 'Rooftop venue in the Meatpacking District. Black tie, two hundred guests, the kind of people we should be cultivating.' He smiled, reaching across the table to touch my hand. 'It's perfect for us. A chance to be seen together, at our best. The power couple.'

I felt his fingers on my skin. Once, that touch had made me feel safe. Now it just felt like another performance.

'When?' I asked, my voice steady.

'Three weeks. Saturday night.' His thumb traced circles on my wrist. 'I've already secured our spots. The Hendersons will be there. The Carlisles. Everyone who matters.'

His other hand moved to the back of his neck, fingers rubbing that spot just beneath his collar. The tell. The lie.

'It sounds wonderful,' I said, squeezing his hand. 'We should make an entrance.'

His smile widened. He thought he was winning.

As soon as he went to shower, I texted Julian: 'Event confirmed. Meatpacking District rooftop. Three weeks Saturday.'

Reyes, the investigator, was thorough. By Thursday, he had photos of the venue—a sleek glass structure with panoramic views of the Hudson—and a guest list that read like a who's who of our social circle. Two hundred people, all of them witnesses to the life we'd built together. All of them about to witness its demolition.

But the most damning piece came in an encrypted file that afternoon: a draft of the evening's program. Not a charity event. Not a networking opportunity.

A birthday party. For Talon Richardson.

The seven-year-old boy with his father's jawline would be celebrated with a three-tier cake, a magician, and two hundred of New York's elite bearing gifts. The program included a special moment—a 'father-son reveal' where Keith would introduce Talon to the crowd as his 'godson.'

I stared at the screen, my reflection ghostlike in the dark glass. Godson. The first step in a carefully choreographed dance of legitimization. Once the crowd accepted 'godson,' the transition to 'son' would be seamless.

'He's testing the waters,' Julian said when I called him. 'Seeing how people react before he goes public with the truth.'

'Then we'll give him an audience,' I replied, my voice cold. 'And then we'll give him a performance he'll never forget.'

The Columbia seminar was about corporate ethics—a cruel irony, given my current situation. I sat at a round table with eleven other executives, all of us pretending to care about theoretical moral dilemmas while our real lives were built on compromise and calculation.

'Eden Weaver,' a voice said across the table. 'I've read your paper on supply chain ethics.'

I looked up. A man in his early forties, with the kind of composed attention that made you feel seen rather than scrutinized. His business card, passed across the polished wood, read 'Desmond Ellis, Venture Capitalist.'

'You've read my work,' I said, surprised. That paper had been published three years ago, before our company had reached its current prominence.

'You argued that ethical sourcing isn't just morally right, it's financially sustainable long-term. Most executives were still treating ethics as a PR cost.' His eyes were steady. 'You were ahead of your time.'

Across the room, a mutual colleague approached. 'Desmond, have you met Eden's husband? Keith's quite the charmer. They make a hell of a team.'

Something cold flickered across my face before I could stop it. A micro-expression. A tell.

Desmond's eyes caught it. He didn't react, didn't press. He simply nodded and changed the subject smoothly, as if he hadn't just witnessed the crack in my perfect façade.

When the session ended, he approached me in the hallway. No performance, no practiced charm. Just calm certainty.

'If you'd like to continue the conversation,' he said, holding out his card. 'My direct line.'

I took it without comment, sliding it into my pocket. As I walked away, I could feel his eyes on my back—not predatory, not calculating. Just... seeing.

For the first time in weeks, I wondered if there was a world beyond this war I was waging. A world where being seen didn't mean being targeted.
