I made the call on Wednesday morning, forty-eight hours after I set Keith's phone back on the nightstand.

His name was Julian Vance. A former client—a woman who'd walked away from a twenty-two-year marriage with her fortune intact and her ex-husband's legal team in ruins—had given me the number with two words: 'Call him.'

His office was on the thirty-fourth floor of a Midtown tower. All glass and gray stone, the kind of place designed to remind you that power has an address. His assistant showed me in without small talk. I appreciated that.

Vance was already standing when I entered. Sixties, silver-haired, with the unhurried stillness of a man who had seen every variety of human catastrophe and found none of it surprising. He gestured to the chair across from his desk.

I sat. I placed the folder on the surface between us. I did not explain it.

He opened it. He read in silence for four minutes. I counted.

When he closed it, he looked up at me with the same expression he'd had when I walked in. Calm. Assessing.

'You photographed all of this from his phone?' he asked.

'Yes.'

'And the bank statements—these are from your joint accounts?'

'Yes. Fifteen months of transfers. The earliest I could access. I believe it goes back further.'

He nodded once. 'It does.' He set the folder aside. 'Mrs. Weaver, you have the foundation for total financial annihilation.'

He said it without drama. Like a contractor telling me I had good bones in a house.

I retained him on the spot.

The investigator Vance engaged was a quiet man named Reyes who communicated exclusively through encrypted files and brief, precise phone calls. He spent two weeks on the Brooklyn brownstone.

The dossier arrived on a Thursday afternoon while Keith was at a board lunch. I opened it at my desk, the door locked, the blinds drawn.

Keith, entering through the brownstone's front gate. A Tuesday evening, a Thursday morning. A Saturday afternoon with a bag from a children's bookstore.

Scottie, walking Talon to a private school drop-off in Park Slope. Her hand on his backpack strap, adjusting it. A small, ordinary gesture. The kind of gesture I had never gotten to make.

I pressed my fingers flat against the desk.

Then the financial documents. Marcus Garza's shell LLC—Garza & Sons Construction, a company with no employees and no construction projects—had received forty-seven payments from our company's vendor accounts over six years. Fraudulent invoices for work that was never done. The total: two point four million dollars, routed into accounts that fed directly into a trust, a brownstone deed, and seven years of private school tuition.

I straightened the papers into a neat stack. Then I straightened them again.

Vivienne came for dinner on Friday, the way she always did. Standing reservation, seven o'clock, a bottle of Burgundy she'd bring and I'd pretend to let her contribute.

She stopped in my doorway.

I watched her take in the apartment. Every surface cleared. Every object aligned. The kind of order that isn't peace—it's control. The only kind available when everything else has come loose.

'Eden.' Her voice was careful. 'What happened?'

I didn't answer. I poured her a glass of wine, set it on the coffee table, and slid the PI's dossier across the surface toward her.

She sat down slowly. She opened it.

The color left her face in stages. First her cheeks, then her lips, until she looked like a photograph of herself.

She closed the folder. She didn't speak for a long moment.

Then: 'I saw something.' Her voice was barely above a whisper. 'Two years ago. In the vendor payments. There was a pattern—the invoice amounts, the timing. I ran the numbers twice.' She stopped. Pressed her fingers to her mouth. 'I told myself I'd miscounted. That I was being paranoid. That it was Keith.'

That last part landed like a stone.

That it was Keith. Because Keith was trustworthy. Because Keith was my husband. Because the story we had all agreed to believe made the anomalies impossible.

I looked at her. She was crying now, quietly, the way people cry when they're ashamed.

'Viv.' I kept my voice even. 'I need you to tell me everything you remember. Every number, every date, every irregularity you filed away and forgot.' I leaned forward. 'And then I need you to help me build something that cannot be argued with.'

She wiped her face with the back of her hand. Straightened in her chair. The grief shifted into something harder, something focused.

'Tell me what you need,' she said.

Outside, the city hummed its indifferent hum. Thirty-four floors below Julian Vance's office, two weeks of surveillance photographs, and one Friday night confession—the architecture of ruin was taking shape.

Keith had spent seven years building his. I intended to dismantle it in far less time.
