Chapter 1

I found it on a Tuesday morning. The kind of ordinary morning that comes and goes without leaving a mark—until it changes everything.

The notification appeared while I was checking our joint email account for a contract that had been sent overnight. There it was, sandwiched between a marketing newsletter and a bill: a shipping confirmation for a LEGO Technic set. Retail price: $299.99. Delivery address: a brownstone in Brooklyn I'd never seen before. Recipient: T. Richardson.

I stared at the screen, my coffee cooling beside me. T. Richardson. Not K. Richardson. Not a name I recognized from Keith's business contacts or family. Just a 'T'—initial mysterious and deliberate—attached to my husband's last name.

Something cold settled in my chest, heavy and sharp. I've always been good with numbers, patterns, anomalies. This was an anomaly.

'Eden?' Keith's voice drifted from the kitchen, warm and casual. 'Are you still working? Come have breakfast before it gets cold.'

I closed the tab with a single click. 'Coming,' I called back, my voice steady.

That evening, I waited until the shower was running. The sound of water provided a white noise backdrop to what I was about to do. I'd never been the kind of wife who snooped through her husband's phone. Until now.

Keith's phone lay on his nightstand, its screen dark. I picked it up, its weight familiar in my palm. We'd bought them together, a matched set—his black, mine white. Another small detail in the architecture of our shared life.

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen. In fifteen years of marriage, I'd never once felt the need to look. Trust had always been the foundation. Or so I thought.

Then I remembered Scottie Garza. A name from years ago, glimpsed in an old college photo I'd found while organizing Keith's desk. His college girlfriend. The one his parents hadn't approved of. I'd asked about her once; Keith had dismissed her with a wave of his hand. 'Ancient history,' he'd said.

I typed in her birthday. 10-17-1984. The numbers felt like a prayer and a curse combined.

The screen unlocked.

I stood frozen, staring at what appeared. Messages. Hundreds of them. Financial transfer confirmations. And photos—dozens, hundreds—of a boy. A beautiful boy with Keith's jawline and Keith's eyes. He looked to be about seven years old.

Seven years. My hand flew to my mouth.

Seven years ago, I had sat alone in a clinic, tears streaming down my face, ending a pregnancy because Keith had convinced me it would destroy our 'pure partnership.' Our 'singular love.' Our future.

While I was grieving, he had been celebrating the birth of another child. With her.

The phone felt like it was burning my palm. I set it down carefully, as if it might explode.

I walked to my desk and began straightening things. Pencils aligned in perfect parallel. Paperweights centered. Everything in its place. The movement was mechanical, a way to keep my hands from shaking, my mind from screaming.

When Keith emerged from the shower, a towel around his waist, hair damp, I smiled at him. 'How was your day?' I asked, pouring him a glass of wine.

'Long,' he sighed, taking the glass gratefully. 'The Henderson account is being difficult. How was yours?'

'Productive,' I replied, my voice smooth. 'I closed the Westridge deal.'

He kissed my cheek, oblivious. Completely unaware that I knew.

That night, I lay beside him in the darkness, listening to his breathing even out into sleep. I didn't close my eyes. I couldn't. My mind was racing, constructing. Planning.

* * *

The next morning, I was up before dawn. While Keith still slept, I picked up his phone again. This time, I was methodical. I photographed every text, every financial record, every photo. I cross-referenced the Brooklyn address with our bank statements. I calculated the age of the boy, the timeline of the transfers.

The arithmetic of betrayal was undeniable. The boy—Talon, I'd learned his name was Talon—had been born the same month I'd sat alone in that clinic. The same week, even.

I set the phone back exactly as I'd found it and went to make coffee. As the machine hummed to life, I gazed out at the Manhattan skyline, the city I'd conquered with the man I thought I knew.

Everything had changed. And nothing would ever be the same again.
