When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress Novel Cover

When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress

One ordinary evening, I carried Dutton's medication to his study—and stopped cold at the sound of Bethany's laughter. Not her polished charity-gala voice, but something private, almost cruel. Through the cracked door, she whispered, "She actually thinks it was her fault." In that moment, the ground beneath my marriage gave way. The husband I trusted and the friend I welcomed shared a secret—a plot aimed at me. Now I must unravel their deception before their dangerous passion claims my life.

Chapter 4

The first change was small. Dutton moved my credit card to a drawer in his desk.

"Just simplifying things," he said. "You can ask me when you need something."

I nodded. I had three other cards he didn't know about, opened years ago in accounts my father had set up. But I said nothing.

The second change came a week later. A tracking app appeared on my phone. I found it while checking my email.

"Security," Dutton explained when I asked. His tone was reasonable. Patient. "After what happened at the Met, I want to make sure you're safe."

I thanked him. Then I bought a second phone with cash and left the tracked one in my room whenever I went anywhere that mattered.

The third change was harder to name. It lived in the spaces between words. Dutton would sit close to me on the sofa, his hand covering mine, his voice soft. "You're the only one who really understands what I've been through," he would say. His thumb traced circles on my wrist. "Everyone else just sees the wheelchair. You see me."

I would feel something shift in my chest. Something old and trained, a reflex from the woman I used to be. The one who believed she owed him everything.

Then he would pull his hand away. Stand. Look down at me with an expression I couldn't read. "You look tired," he would say. "You should go to bed."

And I would go.

I started keeping a log. Times, dates, patterns. Dutton checked my location at 9:47 AM every morning. Bethany asked where I had been at 3:15 PM every afternoon. The housekeeper had Thursdays off. The building's loading dock security camera had a seven-minute gap during shift changes.

I was building something. A map of their architecture. A blueprint of control.

I adjusted my timeline. Three more weeks. Maybe four.

Then Elias sent a text to my second phone: *Tomorrow. 2 PM. NYPL. Main reading room.*

I arrived early. The library was full of tourists and students, people bent over laptops and ancient books. I chose a table near the center where we would be surrounded by strangers, visible to everyone, private in plain sight.

Elias sat down across from me exactly at two. Navy suit. No coffee. His eyes scanned the room once, cataloging exits, then settled on me.

"You look thinner," he said quietly.

I didn't respond to that. "Tell me what you have."

He opened a leather portfolio. Inside were documents—medical forms, legal papers, photographs of a facility I didn't recognize. "A private clinic in Westchester," he said. "The director owes me. The extraction team is ready. We have a surrogate body prepared—Jane Doe, approximate age and build, dental records that will require a second-level examination to disprove. By the time anyone looks that closely, you'll be gone."

"New identity?"

"Prepared. Passport, bank accounts, credit history going back five years. You'll be someone who has always existed but never mattered to anyone."

I traced the edge of the table with one fingertip. Over and over. "The window?"

"Narrow," Elias said. "When the moment comes, you'll have maybe twenty minutes between the event and the first responders. I'll have a team positioned within a three-block radius. But Sarai—" He leaned forward slightly. "—the execution has to be flawless. If anything goes wrong, if the timing is off by even—"

"It won't be," I said.

He studied my face. "Are you certain?"

I looked at him. Really looked. At the stillness in his posture that meant he was holding something back. At the way his hands rested flat on the table, controlled and deliberate. At the small muscle working in his jaw.

"I've been certain," I said, "since the night I heard them."

Elias went very still. The kind of still that was louder than movement. His eyes held mine for three seconds. Five. Then he nodded once and closed the portfolio.

"I'll be ready," he said.

He stood. He walked away. I sat there for another ten minutes, surrounded by people who had no idea what had just been set in motion.

Then I went home.

Bethany was waiting in the living room. Her face was pale. Her hand rested on her stomach.

"Sarai," she said. Her voice broke. "Something's wrong."

I set down my purse. "What happened?"

"I'm bleeding." Tears spilled down her cheeks. Real tears. She was very good. "I think—I think I'm losing the baby."

There was no baby. I knew that. The surrogacy process hadn't even begun. But Dutton appeared in the doorway, his face white, and I understood immediately that whatever was about to happen, I had already lost control of it.

"Call 911," Dutton said.

I called.

The hospital was bright and cold. Bethany lay in the bed, small and broken, an IV in her arm. Dutton held her hand. I stood near the door.

A doctor came in. Spoke quietly. I couldn't hear the words but I saw Bethany's face crumple. Saw Dutton's hand tighten on hers.

Then Bethany looked at me. Her eyes were red. Devastated. Perfect.

"You pushed me," she whispered.

I went cold.

"What?" Dutton's head snapped toward me.

"This afternoon," Bethany said. Tears streamed down her face. "We were arguing. About—about the surrogacy. She said she didn't want to do it anymore. She pushed me. I fell. I didn't think—I didn't think it would—"

She broke off into sobs.

Dutton stared at me. His face was empty. Blank. Then it filled with something I had never seen before.

Rage.

"Get out," he said.

I opened my mouth.

"Get. Out."

I left.

I stood in the hospital hallway and looked at my hands. They were shaking now. Finally shaking.

My phone buzzed. A text from Elias: *What happened?*

I typed back: *She moved first.*

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Then: *Come to me.*

I deleted the message. I walked to the elevator. I went down.

I had four weeks on my timeline.

I didn't have four weeks anymore.
