When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress Novel Cover

When My Husband Tried to Kill Me for His Mistress

One ordinary evening, I carried Dutton's medication to his study—and stopped cold at the sound of Bethany's laughter. Not her polished charity-gala voice, but something private, almost cruel. Through the cracked door, she whispered, "She actually thinks it was her fault." In that moment, the ground beneath my marriage gave way. The husband I trusted and the friend I welcomed shared a secret—a plot aimed at me. Now I must unravel their deception before their dangerous passion claims my life.

Chapter 5

Dutton's study door closed behind me with a soft click. The sound was worse than a slam. A slam would have been rage. This was control.

He sat behind his desk. His hands were folded. His face was empty.

"Sit," he said.

I stayed standing.

His jaw tightened. "I said sit."

I sat. The chair was too far from the desk. I had to look up at him. That was deliberate. Everything in this room was deliberate.

"Do you have anything to say?" he asked.

I opened my mouth.

"Before you lie to me," he continued, his voice flat and quiet, "I want you to understand something. I know what you are. I've always known. I just didn't want to believe it."

I closed my mouth.

"You pushed her," Dutton said. "You pushed Bethany and she lost our child. My child."

There was no child. The words sat behind my teeth. I swallowed them.

"I was in my room," I said quietly. "All afternoon. I have a timestamped—"

"Don't." He held up one hand. "Don't insult me with your excuses. Bethany told me what happened. She told the doctors. She has no reason to lie."

"And I do?"

His eyes went cold. "You've always been jealous of her. From the beginning. You smiled and played the martyr, but I saw it. The way you looked at her. The way you looked at me when I chose her."

I stared at him. At this man I had loved. This man I had sacrificed five years for. This man whose legs I had massaged every night, whose medication I had organized, whose meals I had prepared, whose humiliation I had absorbed without complaint.

He believed every word he was saying.

"I wasn't even in the same room," I said. My voice was steady. Calm. "My phone has a location record. It will show—"

"I don't care what your phone shows." He leaned forward. "You've had weeks to prepare a cover story. Months. You've been planning this."

Something shifted in my chest. A small, cold click, like a lock turning.

"Planning what?" I asked.

"To destroy us." His hands flattened on the desk. "To take everything we've built. You think I don't see it? The way you watch us? The way you move through this house like you're gathering evidence?"

I went very still.

Dutton's mouth curved. Not a smile. Something sharper. "You're not as clever as you think you are, Sarai. You never were."

I looked at his hands. At the desk. At the window behind him showing the Manhattan skyline lit up like a promise. I thought about the external drive in the bank vault. About Elias's extraction team. About the timeline I no longer had.

I thought about my father's photograph in the locket at my throat.

Then I looked back at Dutton and smiled.

It was a small smile. Precise. The one I had practiced in the Met bathroom mirror.

"What are you smiling about?" he asked.

"Nothing," I said softly.

His face darkened. He reached for his phone. "You're not leaving this penthouse tonight. Or tomorrow. Not until I decide what to do with you."

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer. He pressed a number. Held the phone to his ear. "This is Dutton Carter in the penthouse. I need you to restrict building access for Sarai Wells immediately. She is not to leave the premises without my explicit authorization."

A pause.

"Yes. All exits. Garage, lobby, service entrance. Flag her key card."

Another pause.

"Thank you."

He set the phone down. Looked at me. "You're a danger to my family. To Bethany. To any future we might have. I won't let you destroy that."

I stood slowly. My bandaged hand throbbed. "Can I go to my room?"

"Yes." His voice was flat again. Empty. "And Sarai?"

I stopped at the door.

"If you try to leave," he said quietly, "I will have you committed. Do you understand? I will tell them you're unhinged. Dangerous. They'll believe me. Everyone will believe me."

I turned the handle.

"Do you understand?" he repeated.

"Yes," I said.

I walked out. Down the hall. Into my room. I closed the door and locked it.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed and pulled out my second phone. The one he didn't know about.

I typed: *He locked me in. Building security flagged my access. I can't leave.*

Elias's response came in seconds: *How long?*

I stared at the screen. At the question I didn't have an answer for.

Another text: *Sarai. How long until he escalates?*

I thought about Dutton's face. About the cold certainty in his voice. About the way he had looked at me like I was something that needed to be contained.

I typed: *Not long.*

Three dots appeared. Stayed. Then: *I'm moving the timeline up. Be ready.*

I deleted the conversation. I lay down fully clothed and stared at the ceiling.

My door had a lock. But Dutton had a key.

I was out of time.
