Chapter 2

The email arrived on a Tuesday.

I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee I hadn't touched. Gideon had left for the office at six without saying goodbye. The penthouse was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic forty floors below.

My phone buzzed. An email from an address I didn't recognize. No subject line. Just an attachment.

I opened it.

An audio file. Three minutes and fourteen seconds long.

I pressed play.

Static first. Then voices. A man's voice I would have recognized in my sleep. Gideon's voice. Younger. Sharper. Seven years younger.

"The Evans girl is talented, I'll give you that. But Selah Diaz is the better investment. She has the profile. The awards trajectory. The face that moves units."

Another voice. Older. Gravel-rough. "Hoffman, we already offered the role to Evans. Her team accepted. We're in pre-production."

"I'm prepared to triple my investment in the project. Fifteen million instead of five. You recast with Selah. You tell Evans the creative direction changed. You make it clean."

A pause. Papers rustling.

"That's a lot of money to move one actress."

"Selah deserves this role. She'll do something extraordinary with it. And I need you to trust me when I say Evans will be fine. She's young. There will be other opportunities."

"And if she fights it?"

"She won't. I'll make sure of it."

The recording ended.

I sat very still.

The coffee had gone cold. My hands were resting on the marble countertop. I could see the grain in the stone. Tiny flecks of gold and gray. I'd looked at this counter every morning for seven years and never really seen it before.

I played the recording again.

Then again.

On the fourth listen, I started to remember.

Seven years ago. I was twenty-two. I'd just been offered the lead in a period drama that every young actress in Hollywood wanted. My agent called me screaming with excitement. "This is it, Juni. This is the one that changes everything."

Two weeks later, the studio called back. Creative differences. They were going in another direction. They were very sorry.

I cried for three days.

Gideon held me on the couch in his old apartment. He stroked my hair and told me it wasn't meant to be. He said the industry was brutal and maybe this was a sign. Maybe I should think about what I really wanted. Maybe happiness mattered more than a career that would chew me up and spit me out.

I believed him.

I married him four months later.

Selah Diaz took the role. She won the Oscar for it. I watched the ceremony from this penthouse. Gideon was in London on business. I sat alone on this couch and watched Selah hold the gold statue and cry beautiful tears and thank everyone who believed in her.

I turned off the TV before her speech ended.

Now I understood.

The role that launched Selah's career. The role that made her untouchable. The role that turned her into the woman Gideon publicly worshipped while his wife cooked dinner in the next room.

That role was mine.

He took it from me. He paid fifteen million dollars to take it from me. Then he convinced me to give up acting entirely. To be his wife. To make fish chowder and attend galas in silence and believe that this was love.

I stood up. My legs felt strange. Distant. Like they belonged to someone else.

I walked through the penthouse. Every room. The bedroom where I slept alone most nights. The closet full of clothes I wore to events where people looked through me. The kitchen where I'd cooked a thousand meals he barely tasted.

Seven years.

I'd given him seven years.

I stopped in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Central Park spread out below. Green and gold in the afternoon light. Joggers on the paths. Couples on benches. People living small, real lives.

I pulled out my phone. I searched for divorce attorneys. Not the kind Gideon would use. Not the white-shoe firms in Midtown. I scrolled until I found a small practice in Bushwick. Good reviews. Reasonable rates. Far enough away that no one in Gideon's world would ever notice.

I called.

A woman answered. Her voice was warm and tired. "Ramirez Family Law."

"I need to file for divorce," I said. "And I need no one to know until it's done."

"Can you come in tomorrow? Two o'clock?"

"Yes."

"Bring any financial documents you have. Property deeds. Bank statements. Anything that shows marital assets."

"I don't want any of it," I said.

Silence on the other end.

"Ma'am, in a marriage of this length, you're entitled to—"

"I don't want anything that came from him. I just want out."

Another pause.

"Okay," she said quietly. "We'll talk tomorrow."

I hung up.

I sat back down at the kitchen island. The coffee was still there. Still cold. I poured it down the sink and rinsed the cup and put it in the dishwasher.

Then I opened my laptop and booked a one-way ticket to Berlin. Departing JFK. December 18th. Three weeks away. Plenty of time to sign papers. To pack one small suitcase. To decide what version of myself I was taking with me and what I was leaving behind in this beautiful, cold tomb.

I saved the confirmation email.

Then I closed the laptop and sat in the silent kitchen and waited for my husband to come home.

He didn't.
