Chapter 3

The invoice was sitting on Gideon's desk.

I wasn't snooping. I was dropping off his dry cleaning. Three suits. Two shirts. The task I'd performed every Tuesday for seven years because the housekeeper came on Wednesdays and Gideon liked his clothes ready for the week.

The paper was face-up next to his laptop. Schiaparelli. Haute couture. One custom gown. Forty-eight thousand dollars. Recipient: Selah Diaz. Billing: Hoffman Global Media. Notes: Partnership gift for upcoming project.

I stood there holding the dry cleaning bags.

Forty-eight thousand dollars.

I'd asked him last month if I could donate five hundred dollars to a film preservation charity. He'd said we needed to be more careful with discretionary spending.

I set the suits on the chair. I walked out of the office. I closed the door carefully behind me.

In the kitchen, I opened my laptop. I pulled up my calendar. The Met Gala fundraiser was in three days. Black tie. Hoffman Global Media was a sponsor. Gideon had told me two weeks ago that he'd be attending with Selah as part of a "partnership presentation." He'd said it at breakfast without looking up from his phone.

I opened my notes app. I started a list.

Groceries for fish chowder. The good fish from the market on Lexington. Potatoes. Cream. Fresh thyme. The recipe I'd made a thousand times.

I was going to cook it one last time.

Then I was going to leave.

***

The night of the gala, I stood in front of my closet for a long time.

I pulled out the Valentino. Black. Vintage. The dress I'd worn to my first premiere when I was twenty-one and the world was full of light. I'd kept it preserved in tissue paper for seven years. A talisman. A reminder of who I used to be.

I laid it on the bed.

I showered. I dried my hair. I pinned it up with the antique clip my mother gave me before she died. Small silver flowers. The only jewelry I owned that Gideon hadn't bought.

I stepped into the dress. It still fit. I zipped it myself.

In the mirror, I looked like a ghost. Pale. Thin. Elegant in the way that sadness makes you elegant when you've stopped eating enough.

I picked up my clutch. Black satin. Small enough to hold my phone, my lipstick, and nothing else. I opened my phone and found the audio file. I pressed play just to make sure it was still there.

Gideon's voice filled the bedroom. "I'm prepared to triple my investment in the project."

I stopped it.

I put the phone in the clutch.

Then I walked out of the penthouse and took the elevator down to the car that was waiting.

Gideon had already left an hour ago. To pick up Selah.

***

The Met was lit up like a palace.

Photographers lined the steps. I stepped out of the car alone. Flashes went off but not many. I wasn't interesting anymore. I was Gideon Hoffman's wife. The woman who used to act. The woman who gave it up.

I climbed the steps carefully. My ankle still hurt sometimes.

Inside, the great hall was full of people in clothes that cost more than cars. Champagne. Laughter. A string quartet playing something I didn't recognize. I took a glass from a passing waiter and stood near a column.

I saw them across the room.

Gideon in a black tuxedo. Selah in a gown that looked like it was made of liquid gold. Schiaparelli. Forty-eight thousand dollars. She was laughing. Her hand on his arm. He was smiling down at her the way he used to smile at me in the first month we dated. Before I became furniture.

I watched them move through the crowd. Everyone turned to look. Cameras followed. She was radiant. He was proud.

I took a sip of champagne. It tasted like nothing.

Then Selah saw me.

She said something to Gideon. He glanced over. His face didn't change. She started walking toward me. He followed.

She stopped three feet away. Close enough that the people around us could hear.

"Juniper," she said. Her voice was warm. Public. "That dress. Is that vintage?"

"Yes," I said.

"How charmingly nostalgic." She smiled. Looked around at the small crowd that had formed. "It's so sweet when people recycle their old clothes. Very sustainable."

Someone laughed. Then someone else.

I felt my jaw tighten. Heat climbed up my neck.

I reached into my clutch.

My fingers found my phone. I pulled it out. The screen lit up. The audio file was right there. Queued. Ready. Three minutes and fourteen seconds that would end her career. That would show everyone in this room exactly what she was. What he was.

I looked at Gideon.

He was watching me. His eyes were flat. Cold. Calculating.

I pressed play.

Gideon's voice came through the speaker. "The Evans girl is talented, I'll give you that—"

Gideon moved.

He raised his hand. Two men in dark suits appeared from nowhere. Security. His security.

One of them took my wrist. The other took my phone.

"Let go of me," I said.

The grip tightened.

Gideon stepped closer. He looked at me the way you look at a stranger causing a scene.

"You're embarrassing yourself," he said quietly.

The security guard pocketed my phone.

I stood there. Arms pinned. Two hundred people staring. Selah's smile had gone sharp and satisfied.

Gideon turned away.

"Make sure she gets home safely," he said to the guards.

Then he took Selah's arm and walked back into the crowd.

I stopped struggling.

The room blurred. Faces. Lights. The string quartet was still playing.

Something inside me went very still.

Very quiet.

Very cold.

The guards released my arms. One of them gestured toward the exit.

I walked. I didn't look back.

Outside, the air was sharp and clean. I stood on the steps. A car pulled up.

I got in.

I gave the driver the address of the penthouse.

I sat in the back seat and looked out the window at the city lights streaking past.

I wasn't crying.

I would never cry for him again.
