Chapter 3

I was halfway down the hall when I remembered the papers.

Stupid. I'd left them on the reception desk outside the lab — the divorce papers, the ones Alessandro still hadn't signed, the ones I'd driven across the city to deliver. I turned back.

The smell hit me first. Something sharp and chemical, underneath the ordinary lab smell of antiseptic and old coffee. Then the alarm.

It was a flat, mechanical shriek that bounced off the concrete walls and turned the hallway into noise. Students appeared from doorways, confused, moving toward the exits. I moved with them for a moment, then stopped. The papers were still on that desk.

I turned back.

That was my mistake. Thirty seconds. Maybe less. I was almost to the reception desk when the shelving unit came down.

I didn't see it. I heard it — a deep, tearing groan from somewhere above me, and then a sound like a wave breaking, metal and glass and weight, all at once. The impact knocked me sideways into the wall. Something caught my left side and I felt the rib go — a clean, bright crack of pain that took my breath completely. My forearm landed against a pipe and the heat was immediate, vicious, the kind that keeps burning after you pull away.

I pulled away. I tried to stand. The shelving unit was across my legs, not crushing them but pinning them, and the smoke was already thickening, dropping from the ceiling in a slow gray curtain.

I screamed his name.

I don't know why. Instinct, maybe. Or three years of habit. I screamed it twice, my voice cracking on the second try from the smoke in my throat.

Through the haze I could see the far end of the lab. The west exit, still clear. And Alessandro.

He heard me. I know he did. I watched him turn toward the sound — toward me — his face sharp and searching in the smoke. For one second, maybe two, he looked directly at me.

Then Kenna made a sound. A small sound, a whimper, from somewhere near the equipment benches. She was crouched there, frozen, her hands over her face.

Alessandro turned away from me.

He crossed the lab in eight steps. He pulled Kenna up by her arms, said something close to her ear, and moved her toward the west exit. She went with him, her face pressed against his shoulder. He didn't look back.

The smoke closed between us like a curtain being drawn.

I stopped screaming. There didn't seem to be any point.

The firefighters reached me eleven minutes later. I know because I counted. I counted seconds because it gave me something to do besides think about what I had just watched. They cut me free and carried me out through the east corridor, which they'd cleared from the outside. The night air hit me like cold water. I remember the sound of radios, the smell of exhaust, someone pressing an oxygen mask to my face.

I remember thinking: he didn't look back.

---

The hospital room was very white and very quiet.

Fractured rib. Second-degree burns on my left forearm. Smoke inhalation. The nurse said the words in a calm, practiced voice and I nodded at each one like I was taking notes. She wrapped my arm in clean gauze and gave me something for the pain and left me alone with the window.

Alessandro arrived three hours later.

I heard him before I saw him — his voice in the hallway, asking a question. The door opened. He was still in his work clothes, his collar loose, a smudge of something on his left sleeve. He looked tired. He looked the way he always looked at the end of a long day.

He stood in the doorway for a moment, taking in the hospital bed, the IV line, the bandaged arm.

"The fire investigators needed my statement," he said. "That's why it took so long."

I looked at him.

"Kenna's equipment," he said. "The samples she'd been culturing for the past six weeks — do you know if any of it was salvageable? The investigators wouldn't tell me the extent of the damage to that section."

The pain medication made everything feel slightly distant, like watching the room through glass. I looked at his face — the familiar angles of it, the careful eyes — and felt something in my chest that had nothing to do with the fractured rib.

I turned toward the window.

The city was dark outside, scattered with light. Somewhere out there, the lab was still smoldering. Somewhere out there, Kenna was fine.

Alessandro stayed twenty minutes. He said a few more things. I didn't answer any of them. When he left, he said he had a department meeting in the morning and that he hoped I'd feel better soon.

The door closed with a soft click.

I kept looking at the window. My right hand moved, without my permission, to the inside of my left wrist — just above the bandage, where the skin was still clean. I pressed two fingers there and felt my own pulse, steady and indifferent.

I was still here.

He hadn't looked back.
