When My Husband Let His Assistant Destroy Me Chapter 1

I woke to the ping of my phone at 2:17 AM. Tuesday. The apartment was silent except for Alessandro's absence—another late night at the lab, another dinner I'd eaten alone. I reached for my phone without turning on the lamp, squinting at the bright screen against the darkness. An unknown number. No message, just a file attachment. My thumb hovered over it. Three years of marriage had taught me that strange messages at strange hours rarely brought good news, but something about the silence of the empty bed beside me made me tap the file anyway.

The video loaded slowly, pixel by pixel. A grainy security feed. I recognized the green felt of a poker table immediately—the underground club in Manhattan that Alessandro had mentioned once, offhandedly, as somewhere he'd never go. The timestamp showed last Thursday night. My breath caught as I saw him.

Alessandro sat with perfect posture at the center of the frame, his face illuminated by the harsh overhead light. He looked focused, almost clinical, as he slid his own wedding band across the table. The ring caught the light as it spun, a small circle of gold against green felt. The other players nodded, satisfied. But then he reached into his jacket pocket.

My ring. The one he'd taken from my nightstand without telling me. The one I'd noticed was missing but assumed I'd misplaced in my morning rush. He held it for just a moment, considering it with the same detached curiosity he might examine a lab specimen, before placing it deliberately on the table.

"That should cover it," his voice came through the laptop's speakers, tinny but unmistakable.

I replayed that moment three times. Each time, I watched his face for any flicker of hesitation, any moment where he might have remembered whose finger that ring was meant for. There was none. Just the cool calculation of a man solving a problem. I closed the laptop and sat in the darkness until dawn broke over the Tribeca skyline.

When he finally came home the next morning, I was waiting by the door. The laptop sat open on the entryway table, frozen on the image of our wedding rings side by side on the poker table. He paused when he saw it, his briefcase still in hand.

"Where did you get this?" His voice was level, but his eyes were already moving past me, toward the lab coat hanging by the door, ready for his next escape.

"Does it matter?" I asked quietly.

He sighed, setting his briefcase down with a soft thud. "Kenna was in trouble, Estella. She owed money to people who weren't going to be patient. It was the only way to get her out of a dangerous situation."

"So you took my ring?" My voice sounded strange to my own ears—too calm, too empty.

"It's a ring," he said, and I could hear the impatience creeping into his tone. "It's replaceable. Kenna's life wasn't. I made a practical decision."

I looked at him—really looked at him—and saw nothing but mild irritation, as if I'd brought up a minor scheduling conflict. "Have you ever chosen me first, Alessandro? Even once?" The question hung between us, sharp and dangerous.

He paused too long. His jaw tightened, and he glanced at his watch. "I have a meeting at the lab in an hour. We can discuss this later."

He was gone before I could respond, the door closing with a soft click that echoed in the empty apartment. I stood there, my hand moving unconsciously to the bare skin where my ring should have been, feeling the phantom weight of something I'd never realized I was carrying.

Two days later, the envelope arrived. Plain white, unmarked, slipped under the door while I was out. I found it on the floor when I came home, my name written in block letters on the front. Inside were photocopies of documents—financial records, correspondence, all dated just before our wedding. My father's handwriting. Alessandro's signature. A research grant worth millions, contingent on our marriage.

I read them twice at the kitchen table, the words blurring and sharpening. Then I called my father.

"Dad," I said when he answered, my voice steadier than I felt. "I know about the arrangement. The money for Alessandro's research in exchange for marrying me. Did you think I'd never find out?"

"Estella," he began, his tone shifting to the measured cadence of a boardroom presentation. "You have to understand, this was a mutually beneficial arrangement. Alessandro needed funding for his important work. You needed a suitable husband. We were simply being practical."

Practical. Like a business merger. Like I was a line item on a balance sheet. I drove to their Upper East Side townhouse that evening, the documents folded in my purse. My mother answered the door, her smile faltering when she saw my face. My father joined us in the dining room, still in his work clothes, still carrying the Wall Street Journal.

I laid the papers on the table between us. "Explain this," I said.

My father didn't even glance at them. "I provided for your future, Estella. Alessandro is a brilliant man with a promising career. You should be grateful."

My mother nodded, her eyes already drifting toward the family photos on the mantel, the perfect tableau of our perfect life. "Family stability is important, darling. You know how these things work."

I looked at them—my parents, who had sold me like a commodity—and felt something inside me harden into certainty. I stood, leaving the documents on the table, and walked toward the door. Neither of them followed me. Neither of them said my name.
