When My Husband Left Me to Die in the Basement Novel Cover

When My Husband Left Me to Die in the Basement

Every Sunday, the Romero brownstone plays the same scene: Priscilla commands the table, Cain ignores it, and I serve it. For a decade, I've carried the dishes and swallowed the silence. Then Priscilla reaches for the wine, and the light catches a thick gold bracelet, a matching twisted necklace—the ugly kind of expensive. Cain barely glances up. But I see the truth: this family's wealth has a new price. And my husband's cold indifference is about to become something far more dangerous.

Chapter 1

Sunday dinner at the Romero brownstone always started the same way. Priscilla at the head of the table, even though it was Cain's house now. Cain beside her, already checking his phone. Talon slouched in his chair, headphones half on, half off. And me, carrying dishes back and forth like I'd done every Sunday for ten years.

That night, something caught the light when Priscilla reached for the wine.

Gold. Thick and gaudy, wrapped twice around her wrist. A matching necklace sat heavy against her collarbone, some kind of twisted rope design, ugly in the way expensive things sometimes are when they're trying too hard.

"New jewelry, Mom?" Cain asked, not really looking up.

"A gift," Priscilla said, and smiled the way she smiled when she wanted to be asked more. Nobody asked. She kept smiling anyway.

I stared at the bracelet. Something about the color bothered me. Not bright like store gold. Duller. Warmer. Familiar in a way I couldn't place yet.

Then it hit me, cold and fast, like stepping into water that was colder than it looked.

"I'll get some water," I said. My voice came out fine. Steady. I was proud of that, later, when I thought back on it.

I walked up the stairs slowly. Didn't run. Didn't want anyone to notice.

In our bedroom, I went straight to the dresser, to the bottom drawer, to the small brass lock I'd installed myself six years ago after Talon went through a phase of getting into everything. I kept the key on a string around a hook inside my closet, behind my winter coats, where no one had a reason to look.

I unlocked it. Lifted the folded sweaters. Found the velvet pouch, dark green, the one my mother had used for as long as I could remember.

It was flat. Empty. I opened it wider anyway, like maybe the gold was hiding in a fold I hadn't checked.

Nothing.

I sat down on the edge of the bed. My hands were shaking, but my mind was very still, the way it gets right before something breaks.

That gold was the only thing my mother left me. Enough to matter, never enough to spend. Emergency money, she called it. For the day everything else falls apart.

I went back downstairs.

"Where's my mother's gold," I said. Not a question. I stood in the doorway of the dining room, and every face turned toward me.

Priscilla's fingers went to the bracelet, almost protective. "Excuse me?"

"The gold in that drawer. It's gone. And you're wearing something that looks a lot like it."

"This was a gift," she said, chin lifting. "From someone who cares about me. I don't know what you're accusing me of, Briar, but I won't stand for it at my own family's table."

"It's not your family's table. It's not your gold. That was my mother's. The only thing she left me."

Priscilla's face didn't crumple with guilt. It hardened. "Everything in this house belongs to this family. You married into it. What's yours is ours."

I looked at Cain. Waited. Just a second, maybe two. Long enough for a husband to say something. Long enough for him to ask his mother a single question.

He stood up instead.

The slap came before I even saw his hand move. My head snapped sideways, and the room tilted, and for a moment all I could hear was a high ringing note, like a wine glass struck too hard.

"You should be grateful she puts up with you at all," Cain said. His voice was flat. Bored, almost. Like he was correcting a math error.

My cheek throbbed. I put my palm against it, more out of habit than pain, and turned toward my son.

Talon looked at me the way you'd look at something spilled on the floor.

"You deserve it," he said.

Three words. My own son's voice. Sixteen years old, and he said it like it was obvious, like it was something everyone already knew and I was slow for not catching on.

I stood there in the doorway. My cheek burning. My ears still ringing. And underneath all of it, something else — something that had been sleeping for ten years, curled up small and quiet, finally opening its eyes.

I didn't cry. I want to remember that clearly, because later people would ask, didn't you cry, and I'll tell them no. Not then.

I walked past all three of them, into the kitchen, and got my bag from the hook by the pantry. I found the notebook at the bottom — the one I used for grocery lists, for Talon's school forms, for keeping track of what we owed the contractor.

I opened it to a blank page.

I wrote the date. The time. Then, in careful handwriting, exactly what had happened. The jewelry. The empty pouch. Cain's hand. Talon's words.

It was the first entry in ten years that wasn't a list of things to buy.

It was the first page of something else.
