When My Husband Left Me to Die in the Basement Novel Cover

When My Husband Left Me to Die in the Basement

Every Sunday, the Romero brownstone plays the same scene: Priscilla commands the table, Cain ignores it, and I serve it. For a decade, I've carried the dishes and swallowed the silence. Then Priscilla reaches for the wine, and the light catches a thick gold bracelet, a matching twisted necklace—the ugly kind of expensive. Cain barely glances up. But I see the truth: this family's wealth has a new price. And my husband's cold indifference is about to become something far more dangerous.

Chapter 2

I heard her before I saw her. A voice drifting up through the floorboards, wobbly and wet, like she was already crying.

"She doesn't even let me eat sometimes," Priscilla was saying. "I'm seventy-one years old, and I'm scared in my own son's house."

I stood at the top of the stairs in my robe, coffee mug still warm in my hand, and looked down into the living room. Priscilla sat on the good sofa, the one nobody was allowed to put feet on, phone propped against the crystal vase Cain's father had left her. Ring light. Soft angle. Tissue box within reach.

"She takes my Social Security check every month," she said, voice catching. "I never see a dime."

That wasn't true. I'd watched her cash that check herself every month for six years.

She lifted her wrist toward the camera. The bracelet caught the light exactly the way she wanted it to.

"This is the only beautiful thing I've managed to keep for myself," she said, and pressed it to her chest like it was a photograph of someone she'd lost.

I didn't move. I just watched my mother-in-law cry on command for a phone screen, and felt something in my stomach go very cold and very still.

I went back to bed. I told myself it was nothing. A handful of views. Who even watched an old woman cry into her phone at seven in the morning.

By the time I checked my own phone at noon, my name was the second-highest trending topic in New York City.

The video had forty-one million views. People I had never met were using words like *monster* and *parasite* underneath screenshots of my Instagram — vacation photos, a picture of me and Talon at his eighth-grade graduation, my face circled in red.

*Look at her smiling. Disgusting.*

*Poor woman. Her own DIL.*

*Someone needs to report this to APS immediately.*

I sat on the edge of the bed with the phone shaking gently in my hand, watching the number climb while I sat there doing nothing at all.

I still had to go to work. That was the strange, small thought that got me moving — I still had a job, and jobs didn't care about TikTok.

On the subway platform, a woman in a red coat looked at me, looked at her phone, looked at me again. She grabbed her friend's arm.

"Oh my god, it's her," she said, not quietly. "That's her. That's the one who starves her."

Both of them had their phones up before I could turn around.

"How do you sleep at night?" the friend called out, loud enough that the whole platform turned. "You should be ashamed."

I kept my eyes on the tunnel, on the little light that meant the train was coming, and I didn't say anything. There wasn't anything to say that forty seconds of edited video hadn't already erased.

The train came. I got on. Nobody sat next to me the whole ride, even though the car was full.

My manager's assistant had already sent the calendar invite by the time I reached my desk. *Urgent — Conference Room B, 10:15am.* No subject line beyond that.

Marcus was already sitting there when I walked in, along with a woman from HR I only half-recognized, a folder squared neatly in front of her like a prop.

"Briar, thanks for coming in," Marcus said. He didn't look at me while he said it.

"You saw the video," I said.

"We saw the video," the HR woman agreed. "And we've had three client emails this morning expressing concern about the agency's association with — with the situation."

"The situation," I repeated. "That's what we're calling it."

"Briar." Marcus finally looked up. His jaw was tight, apologetic in the useless way people are apologetic right before they hurt you. "We have to think about the brand. You understand that."

"Do I get to explain what actually happened?"

"It's not about what happened," the HR woman said gently, like gentleness made it kinder. "It's about what it looks like."

They slid a folder across the table. Severance terms. Effective immediately.

There was a security guard outside the glass wall already, holding a small cardboard box with my desk plant sticking out of it, my Talon macaroni photo frame laid flat on top.

I didn't cry in that room either. I signed where they told me to sign, and I picked up the box, and I let a man I didn't know walk me to the elevator like I was something that might steal on the way out.

Outside, the cold hit my face and for one second I thought I might actually breathe again.

Then a woman stepped in front of me, phone already lifted, coffee cup in her other hand.

"You're her," she said. "You're the one from the video."

"Please —"

The coffee hit my chest before I finished the word. Hot, then cold, soaking fast through my blouse.

"Monster," she screamed, already backing away, filming the whole time. "Everyone should see what you really are!"

I stood on the sidewalk with a cardboard box in my arms and coffee dripping down my ribs, and people walked around me like I was a stain on the pavement they didn't want to touch.

Nobody stopped. Nobody asked if I was okay.

I just stood there, in the middle of Manhattan, completely and entirely alone.
