Chapter 3

The taillights of Dillon's car merged into the river of red on Second Avenue and disappeared.

I sat on the curb for another minute. Maybe two. The concrete was cold through my coat. A man came out of the bodega with a plastic bag of beer cans and stepped around me without looking down.

I opened the rideshare app with my left hand. My right was useless now, curled against my chest like a small, broken animal. I typed in Mount Sinai. I tapped confirm. A black sedan, four minutes away. I watched the little car icon crawl across the map and thought, distantly, that this was the cleanest decision I had made in years.

The driver did not ask questions. He saw the dish towel. He saw my face. He said, "Hospital, yes?" and I said, "Yes," and he pulled out into traffic.

I sat in the back with my hand in my lap. The city moved past the window — neon signs for nail salons, a woman walking a small white dog in a sweater, a couple laughing on a corner — and I watched it the way you watch a movie you are not particularly interested in. I did not cry. I did not check my phone. I did not call Dillon.

Something inside me was settling.

I felt it happen the way you feel a building settle on its foundation in the night — a small, structural shift, almost imperceptible, that you only notice because afterward the silence is different. For seven years, I had been quietly propping something up. Bracing a wall I would not look at directly. Telling myself the angles were fine.

The wall was not fine.

The wall had never been fine.

And now, on the leather seat of a stranger's sedan, with my burned hand throbbing in time with my pulse, the last brace slid out from under it and the whole structure came to rest exactly where gravity had been pulling it for months.

I did not feel relief. I did not feel grief. I felt the particular stillness of a room after a door has finally closed.

The driver let me out under the white awning of the ER entrance. I tipped him through the app and said thank you. He nodded and pulled away.

Inside, the fluorescent lights were the color of old milk. A security guard glanced at my hand and waved me toward intake without making me wait in line. The nurse behind the plexiglass was a woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up into her hair.

"Name?"

"Waverly Cole."

I did not say Andrews. I did not even hesitate before I did not say it.

"Date of birth?"

I gave it to her.

"What happened, hon?"

"Cast-iron pan. Second-degree, I think. The blister broke in the car."

She glanced up at me over the glasses. Her eyes were kind in the practiced, efficient way of someone who has seen every variety of human catastrophe walk through that door.

"Anyone coming to sit with you?"

I looked at her. I felt the question land somewhere clean and quiet inside my chest.

"No," I said.

I said it like a fact. Like the weather. Like a closing time.

She nodded once, slid me a clipboard, and pointed at the rows of plastic chairs.

I sat down beneath the lights. There was a television mounted in the corner playing a cooking show with the sound off. A man two seats over was holding a bloody paper towel to his forehead. A child somewhere was crying in the rhythm of a child who has been crying for a while.

I took out my phone.

I scrolled past Dillon's name without looking at it. I scrolled past my mother's name. I tapped Scottie.

She picked up on the second ring.

"Wave."

"I'm at Mount Sinai," I said. "I'm okay. I burned my hand making pasta."

A pause. "Where's Dillon."

"He pulled the car over on 73rd and drove to Lola's. She had a leak in her ceiling."

The silence on the other end of the line was the silence of someone setting something down very carefully so they do not throw it.

"Scottie."

"I'm here."

"There's something else."

I watched the cooking show. A man was filleting a fish. The knife moved cleanly along the spine.

"I'm pregnant," I said. "Early. Maybe seven weeks. No one knows. Not even him."

The line went very quiet.

"I've already decided," I said. My voice did not shake. "I'm not building a child's life around a man who pulled to the curb. I'm not doing it. I won't."

I waited. I let her have the moment she needed.

When Scottie spoke, her voice was low and absolutely steady.

"Whatever you decide," she said, "I'm there."

"I know," I said.

And I did. It was the only thing in the last seven days I had been certain of.

I hung up. I set the phone face-down on my thigh. I looked at the cooking show. The man had finished with the fish and was wiping the knife on a clean white cloth.

A voice over the speaker called my name.

I stood up. I walked toward the door.
