Chapter 2

The ballroom pressed in on all sides. Three hundred faces. Three hundred phones. The chandeliers overhead felt too bright, like surgical lights.

I looked at Zayn. His jaw was set. His eyes were flat. The man who had just promised to deserve me was gone. In his place stood someone I'd never met.

But I knew something he didn't.

I knew Scout.

My breathing slowed. My heartbeat steadied. The grief that had been clawing at my chest a moment before hardened into something else. Something cold and clear.

I stepped away from Zayn. The space between us felt final.

I turned to face the room.

Three hundred guests stared back. Some had their phones raised. Others had champagne glasses frozen halfway to their lips. In the back, Henley Oliver still clung to the door frame, mascara streaking her face, one hand pressed protectively against her stomach.

I smoothed my sleeve one last time. Then I dropped my hand.

"I have a proposal," I said.

My voice carried. Measured. Calm. The kind of calm that made people lean forward to listen.

"If Scout Stewart is proven innocent of this accusation, Zayn Payne will resign immediately as CEO of Payne Industries. He will sign over the deed to the Mercer Island estate. And every member of the Payne family who participated in this accusation will kneel in this ballroom and issue a public apology. On camera."

The room erupted. Gasps. Whispers. Someone dropped a glass.

Zayn's face went white. Then red.

"Rachel—" His voice was tight. Controlled. But I heard the crack underneath.

"Those are my terms," I continued. I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes on the crowd. "If I'm wrong, I'll sign whatever papers you want. I'll disappear. You'll never hear from me again."

I finally turned to Zayn. "But if I'm right, you lose everything."

His hand went to his cufflinks. Once. Twice. His thumb and forefinger adjusting the silver even though they were already perfect.

He was rattled.

Good.

Margaret Payne rose from her seat near the front. Her pearls caught the light. Her face was ice.

"This is absurd," she said. Her voice was clipped. Elegant. Dripping with condescension. "You're hysterical, Rachel. Understandably so. But this spectacle—"

"I accept," Zayn said.

Margaret's head snapped toward her son. Her mouth opened. Closed.

Zayn straightened. He smoothed his lapels. The mask was back in place. Confident. Controlled. He looked at me with something close to pity.

"I accept your wager," he repeated, louder this time. For the crowd. "Because I know the truth. And when this is over, Rachel, you'll have nothing."

He smiled. It didn't reach his eyes.

"Witnesses?" I asked the room.

A dozen hands went up. Then two dozen. Then half the ballroom. Phones stayed raised. Recording.

Binding.

I nodded once. Then I turned toward the entrance.

"Scout," I called. My voice didn't waver. "Come in."

The doors opened.

Scout Stewart walked into the ballroom.

Her lip was split. Blood had dried at the corner of her mouth. Her left cheekbone was swollen, the skin already purpling. Her jacket was torn at the shoulder seam, hanging loose. She moved like someone who'd taken a beating and kept walking anyway.

She said nothing about the injuries.

She crossed the ballroom in long, steady strides. Every eye followed her. She stopped beside me, close enough that our shoulders almost touched.

Then she hummed.

Just a half-bar. Low and quiet. An old jazz standard our mother used to play on Sunday mornings when we were kids.

I'm here. I'm steady. I'm not leaving.

My throat tightened. I blinked hard.

Zayn stared at Scout. His gaze moved from the split lip to the torn jacket to the dried blood. I watched him calculate. Adjust. Recalibrate the narrative in real time.

Then he caught his mother's eye.

Margaret Payne sat perfectly still. Her face was unreadable. But she gave a single, almost imperceptible nod.

Zayn turned back to Scout. His expression shifted. Hardened.

"You're injured," he said. His voice was loud now. Performative. "Defensive wounds, I assume. From the assault."

Scout said nothing.

Zayn took a step forward. "You want to prove your innocence? Fine. Submit to an examination. Right here. Right now."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"Prove your manhood," Zayn continued. His voice was sharp. Cutting. "Face this accusation like a man. Unless you have something to hide."

He was cornering her. Forcing her to either submit to public humiliation or refuse and look guilty.

Scout's jaw tightened. But she didn't move.

I stepped between them.

"No," I said.

Zayn's eyes snapped to mine. "Excuse me?"

"You want an examination?" I kept my voice level. Calm. "Then we'll do it properly. With a licensed physician. And witnesses. And documentation."

I turned to the crowd. "Is there a doctor in the room?"

Silence.

Then, from the back, a hand rose.

"I'm a physician," a woman said. She stood. Mid-fifties. Composed. "Dr. Claire Nguyen. I can perform an examination if needed."

Zayn's face went rigid.

I smiled.

"Perfect," I said. "Let's get started."
