Chapter 3

Zayn didn't answer me. He didn't need to.

He lifted two fingers, barely, the kind of gesture you'd miss if you weren't watching for it. But I was watching. I'd spent six years learning every signal this man made, every twitch that meant something was about to happen. Four men peeled off the walls near the exits — dark suits, earpieces, the kind of stillness that isn't calm, it's training. They'd been there all night. Pouring water. Straightening chairs. Waiting.

They started walking toward Scout.

I didn't think. My body moved before my mind caught up, and I stepped in front of my sister, arms out, my wedding dress pooling white around my heels like something spilled.

"Rachel." Scout's voice, low, behind me. A warning.

"Stay," I said, not turning around.

The security men slowed. Not stopped. Slowed. Their eyes went past me, to Zayn, waiting for the next signal.

I looked at my husband of forty minutes. My voice didn't rise. I made sure of that. I'd learned a long time ago that the quietest voice in the room is the one people strain to hear.

"If one of them touches her," I said, "this stops being about a wager. It becomes assault, battery, and a lawsuit with three hundred witnesses and three hundred phones. You'll spend the rest of your CEO career explaining to a jury why you sicced hired muscle on a decorated veteran at your own wedding."

Zayn's jaw worked. His hand drifted to his cufflink. Adjusted it. Adjusted it again.

"Stand down," he said finally, not looking at the men, just at me.

They stepped back to the walls. The room exhaled, all at once, three hundred people remembering how to breathe.

Behind me, near the front tables, Henley was still performing. A guest had draped a jacket over her shoulders. Another held a glass of water to her lips like she was something breakable. Henley let her head loll, let a sob shudder out of her, perfectly timed. But I'd been watching her for twenty minutes now, ever since she staggered through those doors, and I'd seen the same thing over and over.

Her hand kept finding her stomach. Not clutching it in pain. Cradling it. The flat of her palm pressed low and gentle, the way you'd hold something you were afraid of dropping.

I said nothing. I filed it away, the way I filed everything, in the same part of my mind where I kept dates and receipts and the exact shade of red Zayn's face turned when he lied.

Margaret Payne rose.

She did it slowly, deliberately, her pearls catching the chandelier light as she smoothed her skirt and turned to face the ballroom like she was addressing a board, not a wedding. Her voice, when it came, was cool and carrying, the kind of voice that had never once needed to shout to be obeyed.

"I understand emotions are running high," she said. "But let us not lose sight of what matters. A serious accusation has been made. A woman has come forward, injured and afraid. I would ask everyone in this room to consider what kind of family — what kind of *integrity* — would allow a stranger to hijack that woman's pain for a public spectacle."

Heads turned. A few guests murmured agreement. She was good. She'd been doing this her whole life, building consensus out of nothing, and she wasn't afraid. Not yet. She thought she still had the room.

I let her finish. Then I stepped forward.

"You're right, Margaret." My voice stayed even. "Integrity does matter. So let's talk about it."

I turned to face three hundred people. Every phone in the room was already up, red recording lights blinking like a field of tiny eyes.

"You've all been told that my brother assaulted Henley Oliver tonight." I paused. Let it sit. "Scout Stewart is not my brother."

A ripple. Confusion, mostly. Someone laughed, thinking it was a joke, then stopped when no one else did.

"Scout is my sister," I said. "A woman. She has served for years as a Special Operations officer in an elite unit that does not, to this day, accept women — because she lived under a male identity to do it. She has commendations most of the men in security standing against that wall could never earn in a lifetime."

I reached back without looking, my hand finding the inside pocket of Scout's jacket, the one worn soft at the seams from a decade of her fingers checking it was still there. I pulled out the ID. Laminated, edges gone gray and rounded from handling, her photo staring out flat and unsmiling.

I held it up. High. Steady. Let every camera in the room find it.

"This," I said, "is my sister."

The silence that followed had a texture to it, thick and total, three hundred people recalculating everything they'd believed for the last ten minutes.

Zayn's face had gone the color of the tablecloths.

"That's not possible," he said. But his voice had lost its edge. For the first time all night, it cracked right down the middle.
