Chapter 3

The ceiling tiles had water stains. I counted them while the medication pulled me under. Seventeen. Maybe eighteen. The edges blurred when I tried to focus.

My phone buzzed on the bedside table. Once. Twice. Three times.

I didn't reach for it.

The IV drip was steady. Clear fluid running into my arm. The fetal monitor beeped beside me. Slow. Consistent. The sound was almost soothing if I didn't think about what it meant. If I didn't think about the baby boy—because I knew somehow, had known from the beginning—whose heartbeat I was listening to.

A nurse came in. Not Claire. Someone younger. She checked the IV bag and made a note on her tablet.

"How's the pain?" she asked.

"Manageable."

She nodded and left.

My phone lit up again. Everett's name on the screen. I watched it ring until it stopped.

The cramping started twenty minutes later. Low and deep. Different from before. Wrong.

I pressed the call button.

No one came.

I pressed it again. Held it down.

The cramping got worse. I felt wetness between my legs. Warm. Too much.

The monitor's beeping changed pitch. Faster. Then irregular. Then—

The door slammed open. Two nurses. Then three. Someone grabbed my wrist. Someone else yanked the blanket back.

"She's hemorrhaging. Where's the progesterone?"

"It's not here. The order was—"

"Get it from pharmacy. Now."

"Pharmacy says it was transferred. All of it. Authorization came from Mr. Walker two hours ago."

Silence. Just for a second. Then movement everywhere.

"Page the attending. Get me anything we have left. Move."

I stared at the ceiling tiles. Seventeen. Definitely seventeen.

The fetal monitor's beeping slowed. Slowed more.

Then stopped.

Someone said oh God. Someone else said I'm sorry. Someone pressed their hand against my shoulder and I realized I was shaking. Not crying. Just shaking.

They worked on me for a while. I didn't watch. I looked at the water stains and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist until the skin went white.

When I woke up again, the room was different. Private. Quiet. The fetal monitor was gone.

Claire Novak stood at the foot of my bed with a tablet. She had the kind of face that had seen everything twice and stopped being surprised.

"Mrs. Walker." Her voice was flat. Professional. "I need to go over your discharge paperwork."

I didn't respond.

"The pregnancy was not viable. We did everything we could with the resources available. The hemorrhaging caused—"

"Where did the medication go?"

She looked at me. Something flickered in her expression. Then smoothed out.

"Your progesterone and anti-hemorrhagic supply was reassigned on Mr. Walker's authorization. Approximately two hours before the hemorrhaging became critical."

"Reassigned where?"

"I'm not at liberty to—"

"Where."

Claire glanced at the door. Then back at me. "A private clinic. Across town. For a Miss Veronica Diaz."

I nodded once. "Thank you."

She left the tablet on the table and walked out.

I lay there and breathed. In. Out. In. Out. The rhythm was something to focus on. Something mechanical.

My phone was still on the bedside table. Fourteen missed calls. All Everett.

I turned it off.

Then I pressed the call button. When the nurse came—not Claire, someone older—I asked for a pen and paper.

"Are you sure you should be—"

"Please."

She brought a notepad and a ballpoint pen. Hospital logo at the top.

I started writing.

For three days, I didn't leave the bed unless I had to. I ate the meals they brought. Drank the water. Let them check my vitals. Signed the forms they put in front of me.

At night, I used the burner phone the night nurse bought me. Cash. No questions. I called a family law attorney whose name I found through a private directory. Not someone Everett knew. Not someone connected to the Walker family network.

I explained what I needed. The attorney didn't ask why. She just said she'd have the documents ready in forty-eight hours.

Everett called seventeen times the first day. Twelve times the second. By the third day, he stopped calling. He sent texts instead. Long ones. Frantic ones. Then short ones. Then just my name. Over and over.

Sawyer.

Sawyer.

Sawyer.

I didn't read past the first line of any of them.

On the morning of the fourth day, Claire brought my discharge papers. She set them on the table without looking at me.

"You're cleared to leave. Follow up with your primary care physician in two weeks. The autopsy report will be available in—"

"It was a boy."

She stopped. Looked at me.

"Yes," she said quietly. "It was."

I signed the discharge forms. Then I asked her to call me a car. Not Everett. Not anyone from the Walker family. Just a car.

She nodded and left.

I got dressed slowly. My clothes were in a plastic bag. Someone had washed them. The blood was gone.

The divorce papers were in a manila folder the attorney had couriered over. Thick. Detailed. My signature already on every page that needed it.

I put the folder in my bag.

Then I walked out of the room, down the hallway, past the nurses' station where Claire didn't look up, and through the automatic doors into the gray morning light.

The car was waiting.

I got in and gave the driver an address. Not the penthouse. Not anywhere Everett would think to look.

As we pulled away from the hospital, I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist one more time.

Then I let go.
