Chapter 4

Everett came on the fifth day.

I heard his footsteps in the hallway before I saw him. Fast. Uneven. The kind of walk that meant he'd been running.

The door opened. He filled the frame. His shirt was wrinkled. He hadn't shaved. His eyes found mine and something in his face cracked open.

"Sawyer." He crossed the room in three steps. Reached for my hand. "God. I've been calling. Why didn't you—"

"Sit down."

He stopped. Blinked.

"Please," I said.

He sat in the chair beside the bed. His knee bounced. His hands opened and closed on his thighs.

I reached for the folder on the bedside table. Manila. Thick. I'd organized it carefully. Insurance forms on top. Medical release authorizations next. Hospital billing paperwork. Then the property settlement agreement. Then the custody waiver—irrelevant now, but required by law. Then the final divorce decree.

Every signature tab was identical. Yellow. Rectangular. The attorney had been thorough.

I set the stack on his lap.

"I need you to sign these," I said.

His phone buzzed. He glanced at it. His jaw tightened.

"What is this?" He picked up the first page. Scanned it. "Insurance? Sawyer, I'll handle all of this. You don't need to—"

His phone buzzed again. Longer this time. A call.

Veronica's name lit up the screen.

He declined it. But his hand stayed on the phone.

"Just sign them," I said. "Please."

"Are you being discharged? I'll take you home. I've got the car downstairs. We'll—"

Another buzz. A text this time. I couldn't see what it said. But I saw his face change.

"Everett."

He looked up.

"Sign the papers. Then you can go."

Something flickered in his eyes. Confusion. Maybe suspicion. But his phone buzzed again and whatever question he'd been forming dissolved.

He grabbed the pen from the table. Flipped through the pages. His eyes moved across the lines without stopping. Without reading. He found the first yellow tab. Signed. Flipped. Found the next one. Signed.

His phone kept buzzing.

I watched his hand move across the pages. Everett Walker. Everett Walker. Everett Walker. The signature got faster. Messier.

He reached the last page. Signed it. Closed the folder. Stood.

"I'll be back tonight," he said. He squeezed my hand. His palm was damp. "I just need to—there's something I have to—"

"It's fine."

He kissed my forehead. Fast. Distracted. Then he was gone.

I listened to his footsteps retreat down the hallway. Fast again. Running.

I picked up the folder. Opened it to the final page. His signature was there. Wet ink. Legal.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist.

"Goodbye, Everett," I whispered.

The room didn't answer.

Forty-eight hours later, I was gone.

The federal biomedical research program accepted my application the same day I submitted it. Classified clearance. Immediate start date. New facility. New city. They didn't ask why I was available on such short notice. They just said yes.

I packed one bag. Clothes. Toiletries. My research journals. The hospital autopsy report in a sealed envelope I would never open again because I'd already memorized every word.

The penthouse was silent when I walked through it for the last time. Everett was at the office. Or with Veronica. It didn't matter.

I took my wedding ring off in the kitchen. The band left a pale line on my finger. I centered the ring on a folded napkin on the counter. White linen. Monogrammed. A wedding gift from his mother.

I didn't leave a note.

There was nothing left to say.

I called the car. Took the service elevator down. Left through the garage.

I didn't look back.

I didn't tell my mother. She would have called Veronica. Veronica would have called Everett. The chain was predictable.

I didn't say goodbye to anyone.

I just stopped existing in the life Everett Walker had built around me.

The new apartment was small. Furnished. Temporary. I didn't unpack.

I reported to the research facility on a Monday morning. Showed my clearance badge. Signed the NDAs. Met my team.

No one asked about my personal life. No one asked why I'd relocated. In classified research, people understood that some questions didn't get answered.

I worked sixteen-hour days. I logged data. I ran tests. I wrote reports. At night, I came back to the apartment and sat in the dark and pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist until the pressure became a rhythm I could breathe to.

I didn't think about Everett.

I didn't let myself.

Three weeks after I left, my phone—the old one, the one I'd turned off and buried in my bag—buzzed once. A voicemail. I didn't listen to it. I took the SIM card out. Snapped it in half. Threw both pieces away.

Everett Walker didn't know where I was.

He didn't know what he'd signed.

And for now, that was enough.

Back in New York, Everett pushed open the penthouse door at midnight.

The lights were off. He didn't bother turning them on. He dropped his briefcase. Loosened his tie. Walked toward the bedroom.

He stopped in the kitchen.

The ring sat on the napkin. Centered. Deliberate.

He picked it up. Turned it over in his palm. The metal was cold.

"Sawyer?"

His voice echoed.

No answer.

He walked through the apartment. Checked every room. The closets were full. Her books were on the shelves. Her coffee mug was in the sink.

Everything was exactly where it should be.

Except her.

He pulled out his phone. Called her number. It rang once. Then went dead. Not voicemail. Just silence.

He called again. Same thing.

He sat down on the kitchen floor. The ring was still in his hand.

He didn't understand.

Not yet.

But he would.
