My Husband’s Mistress Stole Millions for Her Lover Chapter 1

I sat alone at the corner table of Le Bernardin for two hours, watching other couples clink champagne glasses and whisper across candlelit tables. The black dress I'd saved four months to buy felt suddenly heavy on my shoulders. It was our third wedding anniversary, and Sterling was ninety minutes late.

The maître d' approached with practiced sympathy. "Would you like to order, Mrs. Nichols? Or perhaps wait a little longer?"

I managed a smile. "Just a few more minutes, thank you."

Another ten minutes passed. My phone buzzed. Probably Sterling, finally remembering the date. I pulled it from my purse, my heart lifting despite myself.

It wasn't Sterling. It was an Instagram notification.

Brooke Munoz had posted a story.

My thumb hovered over the screen for a moment before I tapped it. The image loaded, and my world tilted on its axis. Sterling and Brooke on a rooftop bar in SoHo, Manhattan's glittering skyline spread out behind them. He was wearing the Tom Ford jacket I'd bought him for Christmas. She was wearing a red dress that hugged every curve, her manicured hand pressed possessively against his chest as they clinked champagne flutes. The caption read: "Celebrating early with my favorite person. 🥂 #workperks"

I stared at the screen until the image disappeared, then stared at the empty chair across from me. The waiter approached again, and I shook my head. "Just the check, please."

I paid with exact change, leaving no tip. The subway ride home was a blur of faces and noise that seemed to belong to someone else's life.

Sterling arrived home after midnight. I was sitting in the dark living room, still in that black dress, watching shadows dance across the walls. The scent of expensive perfume—not mine—reached me before he did.

"You're still up," he said, not a question but an accusation. He didn't look at me as he loosened his tie.

"Where were you?" My voice came out softer than I intended.

He finally glanced at me, his expression a mixture of irritation and something like pity. "Stop being so needy, Kennedy. It's exhausting. I was working late. Some of us still have careers to maintain."

He walked past me toward the bedroom without waiting for a response, leaving me alone in the hallway. The door clicked shut behind him.

I sat there for a long time, watching the shadows shift. Then I got up and moved to the kitchen. The leather notebook I'd carried since graduate school was in the drawer where I kept the good knives Sterling never used. I pulled it out, opened to a fresh page, and began to write.

My handwriting was steady, methodical. Not the frantic script of a woman falling apart, but the measured notation of someone taking inventory. Of assets. Of liabilities. Of evidence.

I wrote a single sentence: *I will not leave. I will not crumble. I will reclaim everything.*

Morning came with harsh sunlight and the smell of coffee—mine, not Sterling's. He sat at our breakfast bar, scrolling through his phone, occasionally lifting the mug I'd prepared to his lips without acknowledgment. I watched him from the corner of my eye as I prepared his lunch, the same way I had every morning for three years.

He left without a word, his keys jingling as he grabbed his coat.

When the door closed, I pulled out my notebook again and turned to a fresh page. Two columns this time: WHAT I KNOW and WHAT I NEED TO PROVE. Under the first, I wrote: *Sterling is having an affair with Brooke Munoz.* Under the second, I wrote: *Every dollar he thinks is his.* I circled "founding documents" twice, then reached for my phone.

My law school contact answered on the second ring. "Kennedy Price, as I live and breathe. I thought you'd gone full Stepford."

"I need a copy of the original operating agreement for Nichols Tech," I said, not bothering with pleasantries. "The one with all the amendments from the seed round."

A pause. "That's buried deep, Ken. It'll take some digging."

"I don't care what it takes. I need it by tomorrow."

Three days later, I sat cross-legged on our living room floor, surrounded by photocopies of the founding documents Sterling had never bothered to read. My finger traced down to Article 7, Section 3: the morality and criminal misconduct clause I'd drafted myself. I'd insisted on it as a condition of bringing in the angel investors. Sterling had signed without reading, just like he'd signed our marriage certificate without truly understanding what it meant to have me on his team.

I photographed every page, sending them to an encrypted folder Archer had helped me set up. Then I closed the binder and allowed myself one small, cold smile.

The first piece was in place.
