When My Father’s Killer Said I Belonged to Him

At sixteen, my life shattered after uncovering the truth behind my father's death. Disguised as a server, I sneaked into the elite Armstrong estate gala to find answers. Chapter 3

The file is pale blue. Corporate letterhead. I set it on Kylo's desk at an angle—not obvious, but visible if you're looking. The top page shows Darius's signature next to the words *Board Restructuring Proposal*. Underneath, in smaller print: *Dilution of primary succession rights pending shareholder approval.*

I photographed it an hour ago in Darius's study. Now it sits on Kylo's mahogany desk like a lit match.

I step back. Check the room. Everything else is exactly as Kylo left it this morning. Coffee cup. Fountain pen. The pill case he thinks I don't know about tucked in the drawer.

I leave.

Downstairs, I slip the second document into Darius's briefcase. A meeting schedule. Two dissident board members. Kylo's name at the top. Yesterday's date.

I made it myself. Photoshop and a copied signature. It took three drafts to get the kerning right.

I close the briefcase. Walk away.

Forty-eight hours.

That's all it takes.

---

I'm setting the dinner table when the shouting starts.

Two floors up. Darius's study. The words aren't clear but the rage is. Kylo's voice cuts through first—sharp, furious. Then Darius, lower, colder.

Something crashes. Glass, maybe. Or a lamp.

I set down the salad fork. Count silently. One. Two. Three.

More shouting. Louder now.

My mother appears in the doorway. Her face is tight. Worried. "Ivory—"

"It's fine, Mom."

"Should we—"

"No." I smooth the napkin beside the plate. "We don't hear anything."

She hesitates. Then nods. Disappears back into the kitchen.

I finish the table. Every fork aligned. Every glass centered.

Upstairs, a door slams hard enough to rattle the chandelier.

I smile.

Not much. Just enough.

---

The athletic club smells like leather and old money. Polished wood floors. Framed photographs of men in vintage uniforms. A private screening room for tonight's game—Knicks versus Celtics, courtside seats via live feed on a screen the size of a wall.

I'm here because Kylo told me to be.

I wear a cream silk blouse and tailored pants. My hair is pulled back. My expression is blank.

Darius arrives late. He takes the seat directly across from me. His eyes slide over me once. Twice. Linger.

I don't react.

Kylo sits beside me. His jaw is tight. I can feel the tension radiating off him like heat.

The game starts. People cheer. Darius leans back in his chair, drink in hand, watching me instead of the screen.

Kylo's hand closes around his glass. His knuckles go white.

I keep my eyes forward.

At halftime, someone makes a joke. Laughter ripples through the room. Darius's gaze hasn't moved.

Kylo stands abruptly. Grabs a bottle of ice water from the bar.

He walks over to me.

"Ivory."

I look up.

He dumps the entire bottle over my head.

Cold shocks through me. Water streams down my face, my neck, soaking through silk. The room goes silent.

I don't move. Don't gasp. Don't blink.

Kylo's voice is flat. "You're dripping on the furniture."

I stand slowly. Water runs off my hair onto the polished floor. Every eye in the room is on me.

I meet Kylo's gaze. His pupils are blown wide. Manic. Barely controlled.

I say nothing.

I walk toward the exit. Measured steps. Spine straight. Like I'm walking through a ballroom instead of leaving one soaked and humiliated.

Behind me, someone clears their throat. The game resumes.

I push through the door into the corridor.

Breathe once.

Pull a tissue from my purse. Dab my face. My hands are steady.

Footsteps approach from behind.

"That was quite a performance."

I turn.

The man is tall. Mid-thirties. Expensive suit, but not showy. Dark hair graying at the temples. He's holding a glass of scotch and watching me with something that isn't pity.

"I'm sorry?" I say quietly.

"Cillian Hart." He extends his hand. I don't take it. He lowers it without offense. "I know who you are."

"Then you know I'm no one."

"I know you're Ivory Weaver." His voice is calm. Measured. "Daughter of James Weaver. Living with the Armstrongs since you were eight."

I go still.

He pulls a card from his pocket. Plain black. His name and a phone number. Nothing else.

"When you're ready to leave," he says, "call me."

I stare at the card. Don't move.

"I saw what happened in there," he continues. "I've been watching the Armstrongs for a long time. And I've never seen anyone look at Darius Armstrong the way you just did."

"How's that?"

"Like you're counting his bones."

Silence stretches between us.

I take the card.

He nods once. Turns. Walks away.

I stand alone in the corridor. Water dripping onto marble. The card smooth and cool between my fingers.

I slip it into my purse.

Go to the restroom. Lock the door.

Stare at myself in the mirror. Wet hair. Ruined blouse. Blank expression.

I pull out my phone. Open my notes.

*Cillian Hart. Venture capitalist. Armstrong rival. Knows my father's name. Offered exit.*

I add: *Saw the look. Recognized it.*

I close the app. Touch the scar beneath my hair.

In my purse, the black card sits next to my keys.

I don't throw it away.

Not yet.
