This time, even his daughter knows better.

You Made Me Watch You Marry Her, So My Daughter Picked Me a New Groom Chapter 1

I thought Caleb’s mother had finally accepted me when she sent me the address of a wedding venue.

After seven years together and one beautiful daughter, I thought Caleb was finally keeping his promise.

Ellie wore her favorite pink dress. She carried a handmade card that said, “Mommy + Daddy Forever.”

Then we walked into the hotel.

The screen in the lobby read:

CALEB FOSTER & VANESSA WHITMORE.

Caleb pulled me aside in his tuxedo and told me not to make a scene. Vanessa’s family could save his company. The marriage was “just business.”

He still wanted me.

He still wanted Ellie.

He just wanted another woman to be his wife.

I was too stunned to speak.

My five-year-old daughter wasn’t.

She crushed the card in her little fist and whispered, “Then why did Daddy make us come?”

That was the moment I stopped waiting.

And the moment my daughter started deciding which man deserved to stay.

***

The message from Caleb’s mother had arrived just before noon.

*Vale Grand Hotel. Caleb prepared what you’ve waited so long for. Don't be late.*

For seven years, Linda Foster had barely acknowledged my existence. When I got pregnant at twenty-one, she called me an anchor dragging her son down. When Caleb poured every cent of our savings into his tech startup, she warned him not to let a woman distract him. But holding that text, my hands shook with an overwhelming, desperate relief.

*What you’ve waited so long for.*

Caleb had promised me forever since our college dorm days. "Once the company secures its footing," he would whisper into my hair late at night. "Once the board is settled, Maya. I’m going to give you and Ellie the wedding you deserve."

Now, sitting in the back of the cab, five-year-old Ellie smoothed the skirt of her blush-pink dress. Her patent leather shoes swung back and forth, tapping softly against the seat. Pressed between her small hands was a folded piece of white cardstock, covered in bright crayon drawings.

"Mommy," Ellie said, looking up with wide, serious eyes. "After today, can I call Daddy your husband?"

A lump rose in my throat. I smoothed a stray lock of hair behind her ear and forced a smile through the sudden sting behind my eyes.

"If today goes the way I think it will, yes, baby. You can."

She beamed, clutching the card tighter against her chest. On the front, in uneven purple letters, she had written: *Mommy + Daddy Forever.*

Seven years of quiet patience, of missed dinners, of empty promises whispered in the dark while he built his empire. It was finally happening. He was finally bringing us out into the light.

When the taxi pulled up to the Vale Grand Hotel, the towering marble columns and crystal chandeliers felt like a dream. Valets in crisp uniforms opened our doors, and Ellie gasped at the towering floral arrangements flanking the entrance. Massive arches of white roses and imported lilies framed the walkway, filling the air with the sweet scent of jasmine and vanilla.

Ellie skipped ahead across the polished stone floor, her little hand tugging mine toward the grand lobby.

"Look for Daddy!" she chirped, spinning around to take in the mirrored walls. "Where is he, Mommy?"

"Let’s check the directory, sweetie."

A sleek digital display stood near the entrance to the grand ballroom, cycling through the afternoon's private events. Ellie pointed her small finger at the screen, bouncing on her heels.

"There! It says Foster! F-O-S-T-E-R! That's Daddy!"

My gaze followed her finger. The bold gold lettering flashed across the black glass, settling into focus.

*FOSTER & WHITMORE WEDDING*

*Groom: Caleb Foster*

*Bride: Vanessa Whitmore*

The breath left my lungs in a sharp, silent rupture.

The marble beneath my feet seemed to tilt. I stared at the screen, waiting for the pixels to rearrange themselves, waiting for a joke, an error, anything that made sense. But the letters stayed frozen.

*Vanessa Whitmore.*

The daughter of Whitmore Capital. The primary investor Caleb had spent the last eight months wining and dining.

"Mommy?" Ellie tugged my fingers, her brow furrowing as she tilted her head. "Who is Vanessa? Why doesn't it say your name?"

Before I could form a sound, the heavy double doors of the ballroom pushed open.

Caleb stepped out into the foyer.

He looked devastatingly handsome. He wore a custom black tuxedo, the satin lapels gleaming under the chandelier light, a single white gardenia pinned to his chest. He was adjusting his silver cufflinks, laughing at something behind him, until his eyes swept across the lobby and locked onto mine.

His smile vanished instantly.

He didn't run to us. He didn't look remorseful. His jaw hardened, and his eyes darted around the open lobby, checking the guests mingling near the champagne tables.

Without a word, Caleb crossed the floor in quick strides, grabbed my wrist in a tight grip, and pulled me toward an empty service corridor behind the elevators.

"Caleb, stop—" I tried to pull back, but his fingers dug into my skin.

He yanked me around the corner, shielding us from the view of the ballroom entrance. He released my wrist and ran a hand through his styled hair, his chest rising and falling in sharp, irritated breaths.

"What the hell are you doing here, Maya?" he hissed, keeping his voice strictly down. "Who told you to come here?"

"Your mother," I choked out, the words tasting like ash. "She sent me a text. She told me you had a surprise for me."

Caleb closed his eyes, cursing under his breath. "Damn it, Linda."

"What is this?" I pointed a trembling hand toward the lobby. "Tell me what that board means, Caleb. Tell me why your name is next to Vanessa Whitmore's."

He looked at me, and to my horror, his expression settled into cold practicality. There was no shame in his eyes. Only the exhaustion of a man dealing with an inconvenient scheduling error.

"Maya, listen to me," he said, stepping closer and lowering his tone to a soothing, persuasive murmur. "You need to be mature about this. The Whitmore Group is funding our entire international expansion. Fifty million dollars in equity. If this merger didn't happen, Foster Tech would have folded by the end of the quarter."

"A merger?" My voice cracked. "You're marrying her!"

"It is a business arrangement," he said firmly, grasping both of my shoulders. "That’s all it is. Vanessa knows it, her father knows it, and you need to understand it. It’s a transaction to secure our future."

"Our future?" I stared at him, feeling sick. "You gave away our entire life for a balance sheet!"

"I didn't give away anything!" Caleb snapped quietly, his grip tightening. "I set up the trust for Ellie yesterday. The apartment rent is already covered through the year. Nothing has to change, Maya. I can still stay there three nights a week. Vanessa will have her own penthouse in the city. She gets the public appearances, the press releases, the society galas. But you are my family. You're the woman I actually want."

The world went deadly quiet.

He wasn't trapped. He wasn't forced into a corner, brokenhearted and helpless. He had sat down, weighed his options, and engineered this reality with cold precision. He had decided that Vanessa would get his name, his public devotion, and his status, while I would remain tucked away in the shadows, an obedient mistress keeping his bed warm whenever he felt like playing father.

"You expect me to hide?" I whispered, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "You expect me to raise our daughter in secret while you parade another woman in front of the world?"

"I expect you to be sensible!" Caleb urged, his tone tinged with annoyance. "Look at the life I’m offering you. Financial freedom. Everything Ellie could ever need. Why are you making this about pride?"

"It isn't pride," a small, trembling voice came from the edge of the corridor.

Caleb froze.

Ellie stood at the corner of the wall, clutching the edges of her pink dress. She stared at Caleb's pristine tuxedo, at the white flower on his lapel. Then, her gaze dropped to my left hand.

My bare, empty ring finger.

Slowly, her little hands began to twist the paper she held. The stiff construction paper cracked under her grip, folding and tearing as she crushed her drawing into a crumpled, mangled ball.

"Ellie," Caleb said, his voice softening as he took an instinctive step toward her. "Baby, come here. Daddy's right here."

Ellie took a step backward, pressing herself against the wallpaper. She didn't cry. She didn't scream or throw a tantrum. She just stared at him with wide, hollow eyes that saw right through the man she had worshiped her entire life.

"Then why did he make us come?" she asked quietly.

The question hung between us, heavier than any scream.

A few yards away, near the entrance to the ballroom, a tall man paused. Dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, Adrian Vale lowered the tablet he had been using to review the event roster. His sharp, gray eyes lingered on my tear-streaked face, taking in the small girl shrinking away from the groom.
