Chapter 2

Dexter came at me fast.

Not with words. Not with Alpha authority. Just raw, feral violence—the kind that came from a man who'd been humiliated in front of his own broadcast audience and had nothing left but rage.

I didn't have time to move. His hand was already reaching for my throat when the pack house doors exploded inward.

The sound was like a detonation. Wood splintering. Hinges tearing from the frame. And then the aura hit—a crushing, suffocating wave of Alpha dominance so overwhelming it didn't feel like power. It felt like gravity reversing.

Dexter went down hard. Not stumbling. Not staggering. He dropped to the floor like someone had cut his strings, his body slamming into the hardwood with a force that rattled the candles on my dresser. Around the room, every Ironridge wolf still present—Lainey's followers, the handful of pack members who'd been drawn by the commotion—bared their necks in instinctive, involuntary submission.

I knew that aura.

Ty Nightwood stepped through the shattered doorway, and the room felt smaller just from him being in it. He wasn't tall in any exaggerated way. He didn't need to be. His presence was the kind that made you forget to breathe—dark hair streaked with silver, eyes that looked black in the low light, and an expression that promised absolutely nothing good for anyone who'd made the mistake of touching his daughter.

Behind him, three of his elite rogue enforcers filed in with the silent efficiency of wolves who'd done this a thousand times. They didn't draw weapons. They didn't need to. Their auras alone turned the space into a kill box.

"Sylvie," my father said quietly. Just my name. But the way he said it carried five years of waiting, five years of watching from a distance he'd hated every second of, five years of knowing I'd chosen this and having to let me.

I couldn't answer. My throat was too tight.

Dexter tried to push himself up. My father didn't even look at him. One of the enforcers—Garrett, I thought, though I hadn't seen him since I was nineteen—moved forward and placed a single boot on Dexter's shoulder, pressing him back down with the kind of casual, absolute authority that made it clear struggling would be both pointless and painful.

Lainey made a small, choked sound. She'd backed into the corner near my dresser, her pink sweater rumpled, her carefully styled hair falling loose. The wounded-innocent expression was gone. What was left looked younger and far more frightened.

"Cora," my father said.

A woman stepped through the doorway—slim, sharp-featured, wearing the kind of practical clothing that marked her as someone who worked with her hands. Cora Ashfield. My father's personal Healer. I hadn't seen her in years, but she looked exactly the same: efficient, unimpressed, and carrying a medical kit that probably contained things most pack Healers didn't have clearance to own.

She crossed to Lainey without preamble. "Hold still."

Lainey pressed herself harder against the wall. "I don't—you can't—"

"The broadcast is still active," Cora said calmly, glancing at the mind-link channel that was still carrying every word, every image, to hundreds of wolves across three territories. "So let's make this simple. You're claiming to carry an Alpha's pup. I'm going to verify that. Right now. In front of everyone."

Lainey's face went white.

Cora didn't wait for permission. She placed one hand on Lainey's abdomen—not gently, but not rough either. Just clinical. Her eyes went distant for a moment, the way Healers' eyes did when they were reading something deeper than surface injury.

The room was silent. Even Dexter had stopped struggling.

Cora stepped back. "There's no pup," she said. Her voice was perfectly neutral, the tone of someone delivering a weather report. "No implantation. No fetal development. No hormonal markers. There was never a pup."

The mind-link channel erupted.

Not with sound—mind-links didn't work that way. But I felt the reactions slam through the broadcast like a shockwave. Shock. Outrage. Confusion. And underneath it all, a rising tide of something uglier: the collective realization that they'd been played.

Lainey's expression shattered. The soft, vulnerable mask she'd worn so carefully cracked apart, and what was underneath was something raw and vicious and desperate. "You're lying," she spat. "She's lying—he told me to say it, he wanted me to—"

"Shut up," Dexter snarled from the floor.

But it was too late. The broadcast had caught every word.

I felt something break inside me.

Not grief. Not the hollow, aching pain I'd been bracing for. This was different. This was a lock I'd been holding shut for five years finally giving way, and what came through wasn't sadness.

It was rage.

And something else. Something older. Something that had been sleeping so long I'd almost forgotten it had a name.

My wolf.

She came through my skin like an explosion.

I didn't shift the way normal werewolves shifted—smooth, controlled, the practiced transformation of a wolf who'd done this a thousand times. I erupted. My body tore apart and remade itself in seconds, bones cracking and reforming, skin splitting to make way for fur that caught the candlelight like liquid silver.

When it was over, I stood on four legs in the center of my ruined quarters, and I was massive.

Twice the size of any Ironridge warrior. Shoulders level with a tall man's chest. My fur was pure silver, so bright it almost hurt to look at, and my eyes—I could feel them burning, glowing with a light that had nothing to do with the candles still flickering on the dresser.

A Lycan.

Not a wolf. A Lycan. The bloodline I'd buried. The power I'd suppressed. The legacy I'd walked away from because I thought love was worth more.

Every wolf in the room went absolutely still.

The mind-link broadcast carried the image across three territories. I felt the ripple of recognition, the dawning horror, the sudden recalculation of every assumption they'd made about the quiet Luna who'd stood beside Dexter for five years.

I looked down at Dexter, still pinned to the floor by Garrett's boot.

He stared up at me, and for the first time since I'd known him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Good.

My father's voice cut through the silence, low and satisfied. "There's my girl."
