When My Ex-Mate Learned I Was a Lycan

8.4 / 10.0
For five long years, she has accepted the muted bond—no grand gestures, no pack-wide fanfare, only the steady burn of a mark that still remembers him. Then her ex-mate uncovers the truth she buried: she is a Lycan. In a single night of cedar smoke and candlelight, their careful distance collapses into a dangerous, consuming obsession neither of them can walk away from.

When My Ex-Mate Learned I Was a Lycan Chapter 1

The candles were still burning when I felt it.

I'd set them on the dresser an hour ago, small votives in glass holders that smelled like cedar and smoke. The kind of thing Dexter used to notice. The kind of thing I told myself still mattered. Five years. Five years of mate-bond anniversaries, and I'd learned to keep my expectations modest. No grand gestures. No pack-wide celebrations. Just us, a meal I'd cooked myself, and the quiet warmth of a bond that still burned at the mark on my neck.

I touched it without thinking. The scar tissue was smooth under my fingertips, raised just slightly where his teeth had broken skin. It still carried his scent—pine and iron, the smell of Ironridge territory itself. Even now, even after the distance that had grown between us in ways I didn't let myself name, the bond hummed with a low, steady heat that told me he was close. Coming home.

I checked the roast one more time. Perfect. The potatoes were crisp. The wine was breathing. I smoothed my dress and told myself this year would be different. This year he'd look at me the way he used to.

Then the mind-link opened like a floodgate, and everything shattered.

It wasn't the usual pack channel—the one Marcus used for patrol updates or border alerts. This was something else. A broadcast signal, wide and intrusive, bleeding across frequencies I didn't even know could overlap. I felt it slam into my consciousness like a physical blow, and for a disorienting second I couldn't tell where the signal was coming from.

Then I heard her voice.

"I know a lot of you have been asking," Lainey Woods said, her tone soft and confiding, like she was sharing a secret with a trusted friend. "And I didn't want to say anything before, because it's been so hard, but I think you all deserve to know the truth."

I froze.

The background of the broadcast resolved in my mind's eye—the way mind-link images always did, layered over your physical vision like a ghost. My dresser. My books. My anniversary candles, still burning in their glass holders.

She was in my room.

Lainey Woods, the Omega-turned-influencer from the neighboring Clearwater Pack, was standing in my private quarters, broadcasting to hundreds of wolves, and I could see her followers clustered around her like a audience. She wore a soft pink sweater that made her look young and fragile. Her eyes were red-rimmed, like she'd been crying.

"Sylvie's a sweet person," Lainey continued, her voice trembling just slightly. "I really believe that. But she's been holding on to something that was never really hers. And it's not fair to her, and it's not fair to Dexter, and it's not fair to—" She paused, pressing a hand to her stomach in a gesture so deliberate it made my teeth ache. "It's not fair to the life we're trying to build."

The mind-link channel exploded with reactions. Shock. Confusion. Excitement. I felt them like insects crawling over my skin—hundreds of wolves I didn't know, wolves from packs I'd negotiated treaties with, wolves who had watched me stand beside Dexter at formal pack events, all of them now watching this.

Watching her stand in my home and call me delusional.

I couldn't move. My hands were shaking. The mate bond at my neck pulsed hot and sharp, and I knew—I knew—Dexter was close. He had to feel this. He had to know what was happening.

The pack house door opened downstairs.

I heard his footsteps on the stairs. Steady. Unhurried. The footsteps of a man who knew exactly where he was going.

He appeared in the doorway of my quarters, and for one desperate, irrational second, I thought he'd come to stop this. To shut down the broadcast, to throw Lainey and her followers out of our home, to stand beside me the way an Alpha was supposed to stand beside his Luna.

Instead, he walked past me.

He crossed the room to Lainey's side, positioned himself between her and the mind-link audience's line of sight, and placed one hand on her shoulder. Protective. Possessive. The gesture of a mate.

"I didn't want it to happen this way," Dexter said, his voice carrying the easy authority of an Alpha used to being obeyed. He wasn't speaking to me. He was speaking to the hundreds of wolves still locked into the broadcast. "But Sylvie needs to hear this. We all do."

Lainey leaned into him, her hand still pressed to her stomach. "I'm carrying his pup," she whispered, just loud enough for the mind-link to catch. "I didn't want to say it like this, but she won't let go."

The bond at my neck flared white-hot. Not the warmth of connection. The searing, brutal heat of a bond about to break.

Dexter's eyes finally met mine. There was no apology in them. No hesitation.

"I, Dexter, Alpha of Ironridge," he said, his voice formal now, the cadence of the ancient rejection rite, "reject you, Sylvie—"

I moved before I understood I was moving.

The mind-link was still open. Still broadcasting. Still carrying his voice to every wolf across three territories. And I seized it.

I didn't know I could do that. I didn't know any Luna had that kind of raw power over a mind-link channel. But something inside me—something that had been sleeping for five years, something I'd buried so deep I'd almost forgotten it existed—surged up through my chest like a feral scream, and the broadcast inverted.

Every wolf on that channel felt it.

Not Lainey's performance. Not Dexter's rejection words.

They felt my mate mark. The bond still burning at my neck, still alive, still sacred, still carrying his scent in every pulse. I forced it into the channel with a clarity that left no room for doubt, no space for Lainey's narrative, no possibility of misunderstanding.

This bond was real. Active. Unrejected.

And Dexter's words died unfinished.

The backlash hit him like a physical blow. Rejection words, spoken without completion, without the bond's consent—they didn't just fail. They recoiled. I watched him stagger, his hand flying to his own neck, his face twisting in agony as the incomplete rite tore through him.

He dropped to his knees.

The mind-link went silent. Not quiet—silent. Hundreds of wolves, frozen in shock.

I stood over him, my hands still shaking, the bond at my neck still burning.

And for the first time in five years, I stopped making myself smaller.
