Chapter 4

My arm throbbed under the gauze as I walked back toward my desk. I told myself it was just the cut. Just nerve endings doing what nerve endings do. I didn't let myself think about Drake's hands on Mina's face, or his voice going soft in a way it never went for me.

The executive lounge was on the way. I didn't have to pass it. There was a longer route, past the copy room, that would have taken me around. I took the short way anyway. I told myself it was because my arm hurt and I wanted to sit down as fast as possible.

That was a lie. I just didn't know it yet.

I heard it before I saw the door.

A low sound. A woman's voice, breathless, catching on itself. Then a man's voice under it, rough, familiar in a way that turned my stomach to ice before my brain caught up. I knew that voice. I'd heard it across a thousand conference tables, ordering coffee, closing deals, whispering my name into a hospital pillow years ago like it was the only word he had left.

I stopped walking.

The lounge door stood open. Not open by accident. Not the careless six inches a person leaves when they're in a hurry. It was angled just so, a clean wedge of gap that pointed straight down the hallway at the spot where anyone walking from the restroom would have to pass. Someone had measured that gap. Someone had wanted a specific person to hear a specific thing.

Me.

I stood there and let that sink in. Not the sounds. The math.

Mina hadn't left that door open by mistake. She'd left it open like a trap is left open — patient, precise, waiting for exactly one set of footsteps.

I didn't cry. I want to be honest about that, because I keep expecting myself to cry and I never do. My chest went tight, and then it went quiet, the way a room goes quiet after a door slams somewhere far away. I looked down at my bandaged arm. I looked at the gap in the door. I did the thing that made the most sense to me in that moment, the only thing that made any sense at all.

I walked over, took the handle, and pulled it shut.

The latch clicked. Soft. Final. Like punctuation at the end of a very long sentence.

I stood in the hallway for three seconds. I counted them, the way I used to count seconds before a market opened, before a number came in that would either make me or ruin me. One. Two. Three.

Then I walked to my desk.

My hands were steady when I unlocked the bottom drawer. The little brass key turned easy, like it wanted this as much as I did. My passport sat where it always sat, the eagle on the cover a little worn from my thumb running over it too many times these last few months, like I'd known this day was coming and just hadn't let myself say so out loud.

I picked it up. I didn't look back at the hallway. I didn't look at Drake's office door, closed and dark at the end of the row, or the framed photo on my own desk that I'd never once put a picture of him in, because some stupid, hopeful part of me had always thought he'd ask me to someday.

He never asked.

I took out my phone and typed one word to Mackenzie.

*Now.*

I didn't wait for her reply. I already knew what it would say.

I left my desk exactly as it was. Pen at an angle. Coffee cup half full and going cold. No note. No resignation letter typed up and printed and signed with my careful signature. Nothing that said *I was here* or *I mattered* or *remember me.* Just an empty chair and a closed drawer, like I'd stepped out for five minutes and simply never come back.

The car service picked me up outside my apartment forty minutes later. One suitcase. I didn't need more than that. Everything else that mattered, I'd already packed away years ago, into places no one would ever find it — a locked drawer in my own chest, a passport with an eagle on the cover, a version of myself I'd been keeping in storage since the day I decided gratitude was the same thing as love.

By the time my plane lifted off JFK, Mackenzie was already moving. She'd told me once, half-joking, that she'd make a great criminal. Turns out she wasn't joking. She scrubbed my name off every account that could be traced. She fielded three calls from Drake's assistant before midnight, her voice bright and unbothered, saying I'd gone to see about a family thing upstate, nothing serious, back in a few days. She planted a trail heading toward Ohio that led nowhere at all.

I watched Manhattan shrink below the window, all that gold and glass folding into a smear of light, and felt the strangest thing settle into my chest.

Not grief. Not yet.

Just altitude.
