Chapter 3

The fluorescent lights in the emergency bay hurt my eyes. I lay on the gurney and stared at the ceiling tiles. Counted them. Twelve across. Eighteen down. Two hundred sixteen total. My ribs screamed when I breathed. My face felt like raw meat. Someone had cleaned most of the blood off, but I could still taste it in my mouth.

Footsteps approached. Fast. Purposeful. I knew them before I saw her.

"Everyone out." Delaney's voice cut through the chaos of the ER. "Now."

The nurse hesitated. "Dr. Morgan, we haven't finished—"

"I said out."

The curtain rings scraped along the rod. Then silence. Delaney stood beside the gurney, her face perfectly still. She looked at my injuries with the clinical precision I'd watched her use a thousand times. The swollen eye. The split lip. The bruises already darkening along my jaw. Her gaze moved to my ribs, where the X-ray light box showed two clean fractures.

"Tell me," she said.

So I did. I told her about the surgery. The secret. The ring box I'd thrown in the trash. I told her what I'd heard through the door of the private lounge. Every word Killian had said. The laughter that followed. I told her about Fallon accepting my award while he applauded. About signing the transfer papers. About the sidewalk and the fists and the kicks and screaming his name.

I told her how he'd looked at me. How he'd turned away.

"He carried her past me," I said. My voice came out flat. Empty. "I was three feet away. He stepped over me like I was trash on the curb."

Delaney's jaw tightened. She said nothing. Just listened.

"I can't go back," I whispered. "I can't exist in a world where he exists. Where people know what I was. What I did for him. I need to not be here anymore."

The machines beeped steadily. Delaney stood perfectly still for a long moment. Then she pulled up a stool and sat down beside me.

"Okay," she said.

I looked at her. "Okay?"

"Okay." She leaned forward. Her voice dropped low. "You're going to die tonight. Cardiac arrest due to internal hemorrhaging during emergency surgery. Time of death: 2:47 AM. I'll make it happen."

My chest tightened. "Delaney—"

"Listen to me." Her eyes locked on mine. "I can do this. I know how. But you need to be sure. Because once you're dead, you're dead. No coming back. No changing your mind. You understand?"

I pressed my fingertips against the metal rail of the gurney. Felt its coldness. Its solidity. "I'm sure."

She nodded once. Then she stood and got to work.

I watched her move through the next hours with the efficiency of someone who had made an irreversible decision and refused to flinch. She altered my medical records on the computer system. Added complications that hadn't existed. Hemorrhaging. Shock. Cardiac distress. She disappeared for twenty minutes and returned with a death certificate form. She filled it out by hand. Her signature was steady.

At midnight, she brought me clothes. Jeans. A plain sweater. Sneakers. "Get dressed," she said. "Slowly. Don't tear anything."

I moved carefully. Every breath hurt. The ribs screamed. But I pulled on the clothes and became someone else. Someone without a name.

Delaney left again. When she returned, she handed me a passport. The photo was mine, but the name wasn't. Sarah Mitchell. Born in Portland. Occupation: freelance photographer. I stared at it.

"Where did you—"

"Don't ask." She pressed an envelope into my hands. Cash. A lot of it. "There's a contact in Juba. Nadia Osei. Field coordinator at the camp near the airstrip. I sent her your real credentials. She's expecting you."

I looked up at her. My best friend. The woman who was committing a dozen crimes to save me. "Delaney—"

"Don't." Her voice cracked. Just barely. "Don't thank me. Just call me every week or I swear to God I will hunt you down myself."

She drove me to a private airfield in a car I didn't recognize. We didn't speak. The roads were empty. The city slept. At the curb, she handed me an encrypted phone and a charger. Our hands touched. Held.

"I love you," I said.

"I know." She pulled me into a hug. Careful of my ribs. Her arms were steady. Strong. "Go be someone new. Someone who doesn't give pieces of herself away for free."

I nodded against her shoulder. Then I pulled back and walked toward the plane. Small. chartered. The pilot didn't ask questions. I climbed aboard and found a seat by the window.

As the engines started, I looked down at the lights of New York spreading below like a glittering wound. Somewhere in that city, Killian was sleeping beside Fallon. Somewhere, my name was being erased from hospital records and replaced with a death certificate.

I opened my worn reporter's notebook. The one that had survived the attack when I was twenty. The one I'd carried through every story since. I turned to the first blank page and sat there, pen in hand, not writing. Just breathing. The plane climbed higher. The lights grew smaller. Then disappeared entirely.

I closed the notebook. Pressed my fingertips against the cold window. And let Coraline Barnes die thirty thousand feet above the Atlantic.
