Reclaiming the Alpha’s Broken Mate Chapter 1

The anniversary dinner had gone cold an hour ago.

I'd made it myself — roasted lamb with rosemary, the recipe Rowan's mother used to make before she passed. I'd set the table with the good china, the ivory-and-gold plates we'd registered for together at Bergdorf's, the ones we'd never actually used. Candles. A single white peony in a crystal vase because Rowan once told me he thought roses were cliché.

I sat alone at that table for forty minutes before I heard the front door.

Rowan came in without apology. He didn't look at the candles, or the lamb, or the wine I'd already poured for him. He walked straight to the bar cart by the window, poured himself two fingers of Scotch, and loosened his tie like the evening had already exhausted him.

I watched him from my chair. I didn't say anything.

He finally looked at me. Something shifted in his expression — not guilt, just a flicker of mild inconvenience, the way a man looks when he's about to deliver news he considers entirely reasonable.

"Happy anniversary, Sloane." He took a slow sip. "I've decided to let Molly move into the west wing. She needs proper space, and that room's just sitting there." A pause. "The piano room."

For a second, I couldn't hear anything. Not the hum of the refrigerator, not the cars outside, not even my own breathing.

The piano room.

I'd lived in that room. Not slept there — lived. Twelve years of early mornings before the rest of the house woke up, fingers running over ivory keys, learning how to feel something privately, in a house where privacy had been slowly stripped away from me piece by piece. That room was the last place that was entirely, unconditionally mine.

And he wanted to give it to her.

I looked down at my hand.

The engagement ring caught the candlelight — three carats, cushion cut, brilliant and cold. Rowan had proposed on a rooftop in Monaco. I'd been twenty-six. I'd thought I was the luckiest woman alive.

I laughed. Just a small sound, quiet and dry, not quite real.

Rowan blinked. He'd been expecting tears. Maybe a thrown plate. The Sloane from two years ago might have given him both.

Instead, I pressed my thumbnail hard against the band of the ring. Harder. Working it into the thin crease of skin below the metal until I felt a sharp sting and something warm and wet.

A thin line of blood beaded along my finger.

I kept smiling.

"Sloane—"

The sound of bare feet on the stairs stopped him.

Molly appeared at the bottom of the staircase.

Molly Voss — twenty-four years old, blond, and trained from birth to look helpless in a way that made men feel like heroes. She was wearing a silk slip, the kind of thing you'd call a nightgown if you were being generous. Pale gold, nearly sheer. She clutched the hem of it with both hands like she'd wandered down by accident.

"Oh," she said softly, looking between us. Her eyes went wide, then immediately soft with something practiced and perfect. "I'm so sorry — I didn't realize you were..." She trailed off, glanced at the untouched dinner, and her mouth pulled into a small, wounded curve. "Rowan, I didn't mean to cause trouble. I can just stay in the guest cottage. Really, it's fine."

Her voice broke on the last word. Just barely. Just enough.

Rowan's expression shifted immediately. The mild inconvenience vanished. In its place came that particular brand of protective tenderness he'd once reserved for me.

"Stay put, Molly." His voice was firm, almost gentle. Then he looked at me, and the gentleness fell away. "Sloane is just being dramatic."

The words landed like a slap.

Not because they were cruel — they were, but that wasn't new. Because of how easily he said them. How reflexively. Like I was a weather pattern he'd learned to predict and dismiss.

Molly stayed at the foot of the stairs. She didn't leave. She never left. That was the thing about Molly — she was always just slightly, innocently in the way, and somehow it was always someone else's fault.

I set my napkin on the table. I didn't throw it, didn't crumple it. I folded it neatly at the edge of my plate, beside the fork I hadn't used.

Then I stood up.

"All right," I said. My voice came out cleaner than I expected. Calm. Almost pleasant. "The room is hers."

Rowan stared at me.

He'd had a speech ready. I could see it in his face — the careful architecture of his argument, all the scaffolding built to support his decision against the weight of my objection. And I'd taken the objection away. He didn't know what to do with that.

"That's it?" he said.

"That's it."

His eyes narrowed slightly. He was looking for the trap. For the deferred explosion, the cold war tactic, the emotion I was banking for later use. Rowan had spent four years learning the patterns of my grief, cataloguing every time I'd gone quiet before going nuclear. He was waiting for the nuclear.

It wasn't coming.

Because something had shifted in me tonight, sitting alone at that table, watching the candles burn down and the lamb go cold. Something had gone very, very still.

My phone buzzed against the tablecloth.

I glanced down.

The screen lit up with an unknown number. No name, no context. Just a single line of text, white letters on black.

*He's waiting for you. Tonight.*

I felt a pulse of something I hadn't felt in months. Not quite fear. Not quite excitement. Something in between, live-wire and sharp.

Rowan took a step toward me. "Who's that?"

I picked up the phone.

He watched my face, trying to read it. Molly had gone very still on the stairs.

I opened the message. Read it once more, unhurried. Let the words settle.

Then I deleted it.

Not the way you delete something because it doesn't matter. The deliberate way. Eyes on Rowan the whole time, finger pressing down until the message was gone, until there was nothing left for him to find or question or use.

The corner of my mouth moved. Not a smile, exactly. Something cooler than that.

"No one," I said.

I set the phone face-down on the table, blew out the nearest candle, and walked past both of them toward the stairs.

Rowan called my name once. I didn't stop.

The piano room — *her* room now, apparently — was at the end of the west wing hall. As I passed its closed door in the dark, I didn't slow down, didn't press my hand against the wood, didn't give him or her or myself the satisfaction of that small grief.

I kept walking.

Behind me, the house was quiet. Ahead of me, something I hadn't named yet was already beginning to move.
