Chapter 2

I woke before dawn with the incomplete mark on my neck throbbing cold and hollow. The bond-severance pain had settled into a constant ache, like frostbite that never quite healed. I pressed my fingers against it, feeling the unfinished edges where Landon's wolf had never truly claimed me, and made my decision.

I needed to see Maren Cross.

The Healer's quarters were in the east wing, tucked behind the medical supply room where I'd spent so many late nights cataloging inventory. I knocked twice. When Maren opened the door, her sharp eyes swept over me once — taking in the mark, the careful neutrality of my expression, the tension I was holding in my shoulders — and she stepped aside without a word.

"Bond-severance tonic," I said quietly. "The pain is—"

"I know." Maren moved to her workbench, her hands already reaching for the dried wolfsbane and valerian root. She worked in silence for a moment, grinding the herbs with practiced efficiency. Then, without looking up, she said, "You sourced the nightshade-root compound."

I went still. "What?"

"Five years ago. The plague." Maren's voice was low, almost conversational, but her hands had stopped moving. "The compound that halted the spread. I witnessed you bring it to the medical wing. Three trips. You told me it came from a contact in the northern territories, but you didn't say it was your contact. Your resources."

My throat tightened. "Maren—"

"I kept the records." She finally looked up, her gaze steady and unflinching. "Every treatment protocol. Every sourcing log. Your handwriting is in the margins of half the survival charts. I never said anything because I thought—" She paused. "I thought the Alpha knew. I thought he was protecting you by keeping it quiet."

The air between us felt suddenly too thin. "He didn't know," I said. "Or he knew and didn't care."

Maren's jaw tightened. She turned back to the workbench, poured the tonic into a small glass vial, and pressed it into my hand. Her fingers closed over mine, holding them there.

"When the time comes," she said quietly, "I will speak."

She didn't ask what time. She didn't need to.

I held her gaze a beat longer than necessary, feeling something shift in my chest — not hope, exactly, but the beginning of structure. Foundation.

"Thank you," I whispered.

Maren nodded once and released my hand.

I walked back to the Luna suite with the vial tucked in my pocket, my wolf stirring beneath my ribs.

Landon summoned me to his office at noon.

I knew what it was before I arrived. The formal tone of the mind-link. The timing. The fact that Beta Declan Hurst was standing beside Landon's desk when I entered, his expression carefully neutral.

Landon didn't stand when I walked in. He leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, looking at me the way he might assess a problematic supply order.

"Tessa." His voice was measured, almost polite. "I'm giving you until the end of the week to vacate the Luna suite."

I stopped three feet from his desk. Declan shifted his weight slightly, his gaze flicking between us.

"A courtesy window," Landon continued, as if I hadn't spoken. "Before the Mate Ceremony formalizes the transition. Aubree will need the space to prepare."

He said it like he was rearranging furniture. Like the seven years I'd spent in that suite — organizing his pack's medical supplies, hosting alliance dinners, managing the household staff — were an administrative inconvenience he was graciously accommodating.

I didn't raise my voice. I kept my hands loose at my sides.

"Are you issuing this order under the Luna Accord," I asked, "or outside it?"

Landon's jaw tightened. Declan went very still.

The Luna Accord was pack law — a binding protection clause that only the rightful Luna or a higher authority could invoke or revoke. If Landon was operating within it, he had to acknowledge my standing. If he was operating outside it, he was admitting I had no standing to begin with.

Either answer was a trap.

Landon stared at me. His fingers drummed once against the desk. Then he leaned forward, his Alpha aura pressing into the room.

"End of the week, Tessa."

He didn't answer the question.

I nodded once, slowly, and turned to leave. As I reached the door, I glanced back at Declan. His expression was still carefully neutral, but his eyes were tracking me with a focus that hadn't been there before.

He was paying attention now.

***

That evening, I walked into the communal dining hall for the first time in months.

The room went quiet.

I'd avoided pack meals since the confrontation, taking my food in the Luna suite, keeping my head down, trying to hold the broken pieces of myself together in private. But tonight, I walked straight to the Luna's table — the one positioned at the front of the hall, slightly elevated, traditionally reserved for the Alpha's mate — and sat down.

My spine was straight. The incomplete mark on my neck was visible. My journal was tucked under my arm.

Aubree was seated three tables away with her mother Ramona. I felt her eyes on me immediately, sharp and assessing. Ramona leaned over and whispered something. Aubree's smile went fixed.

I picked up my fork and started eating.

An Omega server approached hesitantly, her tray balanced in her hands. "Luna," she said softly. "Can I bring you—"

"Water is fine, Lydia," I said, meeting her eyes. "Thank you."

She blinked, startled that I'd used her name, and nodded quickly before retreating.

Gamma Soren Vale was seated two tables over with the warrior unit. I turned slightly in my chair, raising my voice just enough to carry.

"Soren," I called. "How's the northern border patrol schedule holding up? I know we had some gaps last week."

The room went quieter.

Soren looked up, his fork frozen halfway to his mouth. For a moment, he didn't respond. Then, slowly, he set the fork down.

"It's stable, Luna," he said carefully. "We rotated in two additional units."

"Good." I nodded, as if this were a routine exchange, as if I had every right to ask. "Let me know if you need resource reallocation. I have the medical supply projections updated through next quarter."

Pack-management language. Luna-register authority. Delivered with perfect composure.

Aubree's smile cracked at the edges.

The main doors opened. Landon walked in, late, still in his training clothes. He scanned the room, his gaze landing on Aubree first — then swinging sharply to the Luna's table.

Where I was still sitting.

He stopped mid-stride.

The entire hall held its breath.

I didn't look at him. I picked up my water glass, took a slow sip, and set it down with deliberate care. Then I turned back to my meal.

My wolf didn't growl. She didn't need to.

Landon stood in the doorway for three long seconds. Then he turned and walked out.

I finished my meal in silence. When I finally rose and walked toward the exit, the pack parted for me without a word.

Ramona's whisper followed me out: "Who does she think she is?"

I didn't answer.

But my wolf did.

She lifted her head inside my chest and smiled.
