Chapter 3

I waited until the pack-leadership meeting started at eight. Landon would be occupied for at least two hours — territorial disputes with the eastern border pack required his full attention, and he hated being interrupted during strategy sessions.

The private den was on the third floor of the Alpha wing, accessible through a corridor I'd walked past a thousand times but never entered. He'd told me once, years ago, that it was his meditation space. A place he needed for his wolf to process the bond-dormancy condition in solitude.

I'd believed him.

The door wasn't locked. Why would it be? No one questioned the Alpha's private spaces.

I stepped inside and closed the door behind me.

The room was smaller than I expected — barely larger than a storage closet. A narrow bed pushed against the far wall, blankets rumpled like someone had recently slept there. A single window overlooking the forest. The air smelled like him, that familiar pine-and-leather scent I used to find comforting.

But underneath it was something else. Floral. Sweet. Layered.

My hands were steady as I crossed to the bed. I pulled back the top blanket slowly, methodically, like I was conducting an inventory check.

That's when I saw them.

Tufts of copper-toned fur, caught in the weave of the fabric. Not scattered randomly — concentrated near the pillow, where a wolf's head would rest after shifting back to human form. The color was unmistakable. Aubree's wolf had a distinctive copper coat that caught the light like burnished metal.

I crouched down, my knees hitting the floor harder than I intended. My fingers hovered over the fur for a long moment before I touched it. The strands were coarse, still carrying her scent.

The Winter Solstice Run.

Wolves ran those sacred trails to honor the Moon Goddess, to strengthen pack bonds, to share the most intimate form of trust their animals could offer each other. Running side by side in wolf form, scents mingling, was the closest thing to a mating ritual outside of the actual mark.

He'd told me he was helping a sick pack member.

I'd stayed home and reorganized medical supplies.

And he'd been here. With her. In wolf form. On the most sacred night of the year.

My wolf stirred — not the whimper from the forest, not the growl from the corridor. This was something else entirely. A long, resonant note that seemed to come from somewhere deep underground, like the sound of tectonic plates beginning to shift.

I pulled out my phone with shaking hands and photographed the fur. Three angles. Close-up and wide-frame. The timestamp and location services were enabled. Undeniable.

Then I carefully replaced the blanket exactly as I'd found it and walked out.

The corridor was empty. My footsteps echoed on the stone floor.

I didn't cry. I cataloged.

The next morning, Aubree found me at the training ground.

I'd gone early, needing to move, needing my body to do something while my mind processed what I'd found. The warriors were running drills — Gamma Soren calling out formations, the younger wolves practicing defensive maneuvers.

I was standing at the edge of the field, watching, when I caught movement in my peripheral vision.

Landon and Aubree, walking together across the grounds. His hand wasn't touching her, but the space between them was intimate. Familiar.

She was wearing a pendant.

I recognized it immediately — not the design itself, but the style. Delicate silver filigree, set with a small moonstone. I'd chosen that aesthetic for the Luna suite three years ago, spending hours with the pack's craftsman to get the metalwork exactly right. The pendant around Aubree's neck matched perfectly.

She saw me looking. Her smile brightened.

They approached. Landon's expression was neutral, almost bored, like this was a routine encounter. Aubree's eyes were soft, her voice pitched in that particular upward inflection she used in public.

"Tessa," she said gently. "I just want you to know I never meant for things to happen this way."

The warriors had stopped drilling. I could feel their attention shifting toward us.

Aubree continued, her tone dripping with manufactured sympathy. "Landon's condition was so hard on all of us. I know how much you've suffered."

She said it like we were sharing a burden. Like she'd been helping me carry something heavy.

I looked at her for three full seconds. Her soft expression. The pendant catching the morning light. The way she stood just close enough to Landon to suggest ownership without making it obvious.

Then I turned to Gamma Soren.

"Soren," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the field. "Please note in the training log that the Luna suite's resource inventory will require a full audit before any change of occupancy. I'll need your signature on the documentation by end of week."

Soren blinked. His gaze flicked to Landon, then back to me. "Yes, Luna," he said slowly.

I nodded once and walked away.

I didn't look at Aubree again. I didn't need to.

But I felt her eyes on my back — and for one unguarded moment, I felt the sweetness drop away entirely, leaving something cold and flat underneath.

My wolf smiled.

The annual Mate Ceremony convened at sunset.

The great hall was transformed — white silk draping the walls, moonflower garlands hanging from the rafters, candles arranged in concentric circles around the ceremony platform. The entire pack assembled in formal dress, filling the tiered seating that surrounded the central space.

I stood in the Luna's position within the ceremony circle, my spine straight, the incomplete mark on my neck visible above the neckline of my dress. The journal and evidence file were locked in my quarters. I didn't need them yet.

The main doors opened.

The Lycan King entered first — his aura so overwhelming that every wolf in the hall instinctively straightened. He moved with the deliberate grace of someone who had never needed to assert dominance because rooms rearranged themselves around his presence.

Behind him walked Lycan Prince Zayn Ashford.

And that's when the scent hit me.

Cedar and thunderstorm.

It rolled through the hall like a physical force, cutting through the moonflower and candle smoke, wrapping around me so completely that for a moment I forgot to breathe. My wolf went absolutely still — not in fear, but in recognition so profound it felt like waking up.

I inhaled again, deeper, trying to place it. Mountain air, I told myself. The Lycan delegation traveled through high-altitude territory.

But my wolf knew better.

Across the hall, the Lycan Prince stopped walking. His dark eyes swept the room once, then locked directly on me.

He didn't move. Neither did I.

The ceremony bell rang, and Landon stepped onto the platform beside me, his hand reaching for my elbow in a gesture that looked supportive but felt like a claim.

I pulled away.

The Lycan King took his seat in the honored guest section. Prince Zayn remained standing, his gaze still fixed on me, his expression unreadable.

The officiant began the opening invocation.

And my wolf, silent for seven years, finally whispered a single word I didn't yet understand.
