When My Alpha Rejected Me and Poisoned Our Son Chapter 1

The bone in my right ankle snapped at 9:14 p.m., but I didn't stop crawling until my palms hit the stone floor beside Jude’s bed.

Five years old, and my son was seizing. White foam bubbled at the corners of his lips. The sharp, bitter tang of crushed wolfsbane filled the air, suffocating the scent of his milk teeth and cedar shampoo.

I threw my consciousness into the mate bond, frantic and bleeding. *Landon. Please, Landon, he’s poisoned—*

A wall of pure Alpha authority slammed back through the link. Not words. An order.

*Silence.*

The bond shut like a vault door on a burning room. The link went dead and black. Inside my chest, the dormant presence I had smothered for seven long years let out a voiceless, furious snarl.

Heavy boots clicked against the stone.

Landon stepped through the doorway. His expensive leather jacket smelled of the winter wind, mixed with the sickly, synthetic sweet-pea perfume of Kaylee Fisher. He didn't look down at me as I dragged my mangled leg across the tile. He literally stepped over my outstretched arm, his boot heel grazing my knuckles, and lifted our son from the mattress.

He carried Jude to Healer Maren Sollis, who was already running toward them with charcoal and purging salts.

At the threshold, Landon turned to the corridor. The hallway was already crowded with warriors, pack elders, and his mother, Emiliana.

"My son was poisoned because of Charlotte’s Omega negligence," Landon announced, his voice smooth and steady in a practiced pack-leadership cadence. "She left wolfsbane roots near the nursery stores. Her lack of discipline nearly killed the heir."

I lay against the cold floor and did not defend myself. I didn't beg, and I didn't cry. Instead, I pressed my thumb hard against the mating mark on the right side of my neck—a habit I’d kept for seven years—and I looked past him.

I cataloged every face in that hallway.

Emiliana’s lips curled in cold triumph. Behind Landon’s shoulder stood Kaylee, dabbing dry eyes with a silk handkerchief. Beside the door, Beta Theo looked down at his boots, refusing to meet my eyes.

When the room emptied out toward the private exam bay, I reached under the corner of the low dresser where Jude had dropped his bowl. My fingers closed around a sticky ceramic shard. I brought it to my nose.

Crushed dark root. *Aconitum ferox*. Wild eastern-ridge wolfsbane.

I had personally stocked Maren’s medical stores for seven years through back-channel couriers. I knew every root in Ironmaw's soil. This strain didn't grow in the pack gardens or anywhere near the kitchen supply. It grew only on the steep cliffs of the eastern border, three miles past the inner perimeter.

Jude had not been an accident. He had been an instrument. Someone needed me pinned in the medical wing tonight.

Footsteps returned. Two enforcers entered, hauling a disheveled man between them. He was an unmated rogue, his clothes reeking of musk, stagnant river water, and raw mud.

Before I could leverage myself onto my good foot, the enforcers pinned my shoulders to the floor. The rogue was slammed down beside me. His greasy jaw rubbed violently against the crook of my neck, right over Landon’s mark, smearing his scent across my pulse point.

I brought my good heel up, catching one enforcer in the knee with a sharp crack, but the damage was done. The rogue’s foul musk coated my skin like grease.

They hauled him back up and shoved him out the side exit.

The main double doors swung wide. Emiliana stood there, her arm linked with Landon’s, forty wolves gathered behind them in the ceremonial hall just beyond the healer's archway.

"Look at her," Emiliana whispered, loud enough to carry to the rafters. "Her child fights for his life, and she beds a rogue on the healer's stones."

Landon did not ask a single question. He mounted the three steps of the ceremonial dais in the center of the hall. He looked down at me through the open arch, his jaw set, his gaze hollow.

"I, Landon Graves, Alpha of the Ironmaw Pack," he spoke, each ancient, binding word echoing through the silent room, "reject you, Charlotte, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck flared with agonizing heat. Then, within two heartbeats, it plunged into absolute, dead ice.

The bond sheared apart. It felt like hooks tearing out of my lungs. The biological shock ripped through my veins, and I hit both knees on the flagstones, gasping as the severed link left an empty, bleeding crater in my soul.

I didn't stay down.

I planted my palms on the floor and shoved myself up, leaning all my weight against the stone doorframe. I didn't look at Landon. I looked at the healer.

"Maren," I said, my voice flat, clear, and steady. "Pack Law, Article Four. Scent-trace protocol. Now."

Landon’s eyes narrowed. "Charlotte, don't drag this out—"

"Pack Law," I repeated, staring at Maren. "If an Alpha accuses his mate of bond-treason, the healer must verify the contact under oath before the pack can ratify exile. Swab my neck."

Maren swallowed hard, glanced at Landon, and then stepped forward with a sterile gauze pad. She pressed it against the crook of my neck, pulled it away, and held it beneath the ultraviolet diagnostic lamp on the counter.

The chemical reaction flared yellow, not crimson.

Maren turned around, her face pale. "The rogue’s scent is topical residue. No skin-oil bonding. No saliva. It was applied externally with a rag."

A sharp murmur broke across the watching crowd.

On the dais, Landon’s left hand drifted up to scratch the back of his neck. His tell. He had done it every time he realized he made a fatal error since he was twenty years old.

Before the murmur could swell into an open question, Landon slammed his fist onto the dais rail, flaring his Alpha aura like a whip.

"Enough!" his voice boomed, forcing three younger Deltas to their knees. "She is wolfless trash, and her presence poisons my territory. Exile by dawn!"

Beta Theo stepped toward me with heavy steel cuffs, but his eyes dropped to the floor, avoiding mine. Behind him, two guards unlatched the heavy iron grate over the silver-furnace brazier, lifting the glowing branding iron into the cold night air.
