Chapter 1

The packhouse was quiet at this hour. Most of Silverfang had already retired for the night, leaving only the low hum of security patrols and the occasional creak of old wood settling. I should have been in bed myself. I had alliance reports to review in the morning, a conference call with the eastern packs at dawn, and a supply contract that needed my signature before the week ended.

But I couldn't sleep.

It wasn't insomnia. It was the scent.

Tristan's scent—pine and thunderstorm, sharp and clean—had been drifting through the packhouse all evening, stronger than usual. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, pacing in circles, whining softly. Something was wrong. She knew it before I did.

I told myself I was being paranoid. Tristan was the Alpha. His scent was everywhere. It was normal.

Except it wasn't.

This was different. Concentrated. Leading somewhere.

I followed it.

I didn't mean to. I told myself I was just walking, clearing my head, taking the long route back to our room. But my feet knew where they were going even if my mind refused to admit it. The scent grew thicker as I climbed the stairs to the third floor, winding down the hall toward the master suite—our suite, the one Tristan and I had shared for three years.

My hand was on the door handle before I could stop myself.

I pushed it open.

The room was dim, lit only by the pale glow of the moon through the curtains. But I didn't need light to see what was happening.

Tristan was in our bed.

Giselle was with him.

They weren't just sitting. They weren't talking. They were tangled together, her legs wrapped around his waist, his hand buried in her hair, their mouths locked in a kiss so deep it looked like they were trying to consume each other.

The mate bond snapped taut inside my chest, then tore.

It felt like someone had reached into my ribcage and shredded every nerve ending with barbed wire. My wolf howled—a sound so raw and broken it should have split the air—but it stayed trapped inside my skull, echoing uselessly.

I didn't scream.

I couldn't.

Tristan pulled back from Giselle slowly, like he had all the time in the world. His eyes met mine across the room. No shock. No guilt. Just a flat, almost bored acknowledgment.

"Alina," he said.

That was it. Just my name. Like I'd walked in on him reading a book.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My throat had closed.

Giselle shifted against him, her fingers trailing down his chest. She didn't look away from me. She smiled.

It was a slow, deliberate smile. The kind that said she'd been waiting for this moment.

"I—" I finally managed. My voice sounded strange. Thin. "What is this?"

Tristan sighed. He didn't move to cover himself. He didn't push Giselle away. He just looked at me with the same cold, distant expression he'd worn for years.

"It's exactly what it looks like," he said.

The room tilted.

"You're my mate," I whispered. "You're my—"

"I'm your Alpha," he interrupted. His voice was flat. Final. "You're my Luna. That's all this has ever been."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"You were never my love, Alina." He said it like he was explaining a budget report. "You were a shield. A political arrangement. Having you as Luna kept the other packs from asking questions about why Giselle never left Silverfang after my brother died."

The words landed like stones.

Giselle's smile widened. She leaned into Tristan's shoulder, her fingers still tracing lazy circles on his skin.

"I thought you would have figured it out by now," she murmured. Her voice was soft, almost sympathetic. "You're smart, Alina. You handle all his alliances. Surely you noticed he never touched you unless someone was watching."

I had noticed.

I'd told myself it was the weight of leadership. The stress of running a pack. The grief he still carried for his brother.

I'd told myself a lot of things.

My wolf was still howling. The sound reverberated through my bones, but I couldn't let it out. If I let it out, I would shatter.

I looked at Tristan one more time. His face was blank. Unmoved.

"You used me," I said quietly.

He didn't deny it.

I turned and walked out.

My legs didn't feel like they belonged to me. The hallway stretched impossibly long. I passed two pack members on the stairs—warriors coming off patrol—but I didn't see their faces. I didn't hear their greetings.

I found myself in a guest room on the second floor. I didn't remember deciding to go there. I just needed to be somewhere that didn't smell like him.

I closed the door.

Locked it.

Sat down on the edge of the bed.

My hands were shaking. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist and held it there, hard, until the pressure turned to pain and the pain turned to a dull, spreading ache.

I didn't cry.

I didn't make a sound.

But inside, my wolf was tearing herself apart.

And in the cold, silent dark, a single thought crystallized with absolute clarity:

I would not stay here.

Not for the bond. Not for the pack. Not for him.

I was done.

The next morning, I woke before dawn. My eyes felt dry and raw, but my hands were steady. I dressed in my usual Luna attire—tailored slacks, a silk blouse, my Crownveil crest pinned discreetly at my collar where only those who knew to look would see it.

I went downstairs.

The packhouse was already stirring. Omegas were setting out breakfast in the dining hall. Warriors were gathering for the morning briefing. I moved through them with the same calm composure I always wore, nodding at greetings, pausing to answer a question about the supply shipment, confirming a meeting time with the Gamma.

No one noticed anything wrong.

Except Maren.

The pack healer caught my arm as I passed the medical wing.

"Luna," she said quietly. "A moment?"

I followed her into her office. She closed the door and gestured to a chair, but I stayed standing.

"I wanted to follow up on your bloodwork from last week," Maren said carefully. Her eyes searched my face. "Have you told the Alpha yet?"

I looked at her.

"Told him what?"

Her expression shifted. Concern. Hesitation.

"That you're carrying his pup," she said softly.

The words hung in the air.

I felt nothing.

"No," I said. "I haven't told him."

Maren frowned. "Alina—"

"I'll handle it," I said. My voice was calm. Steady. "Thank you, Maren."

I turned and walked out before she could say anything else.

As I crossed the hall toward the Alpha's office, I pressed my thumb against my wrist again.

The pain was still there.

But so was the clarity.

I would not stay.

And I would not tell him.
