Chapter 2

Three days passed.

Three days since I walked out of that bedroom. Three days since the bond between Tristan and me became nothing more than a formality neither of us acknowledged.

I moved through the packhouse like I always had—reviewing reports, answering questions, managing the alliances that kept Silverfang relevant. No one asked why I'd moved into a guest room. No one mentioned the tension that now hung in the air like smoke.

But they noticed other things.

Giselle started taking meals at the Alpha's table. Not beside Tristan—she was too clever for that—but close enough. She sat in the chair that had always been reserved for visiting dignitaries, the one directly across from him, where she could meet his eyes over every course.

She issued instructions to the Omega staff. Small things at first. A request for tea. A preference for how the sitting room should be arranged. But the requests came with an edge of expectation, a tone that suggested refusal wasn't an option.

The Omegas hesitated. They glanced toward me, uncertain.

I gave them nothing. No nod. No frown. I simply continued whatever I was doing, and eventually they obeyed her because the alternative was standing frozen in the hallway.

I watched it all. I noted which pack members deferred immediately—those who had always been more loyal to Tristan's title than to the work I did in the shadows. I noted which ones held back, their eyes flicking to me before they moved, waiting for a signal I didn't give.

I was done signaling.

On the third day, I was crossing the main hall when Giselle appeared at the top of the staircase.

"Alina," she called down. Her voice was bright. Pleasant. "A moment?"

I stopped. My hand rested on the bannister. I looked up at her.

She descended halfway, then paused, positioning herself on the landing so that anyone in the hall could see us both. A small audience had already begun to gather—pack members passing through, warriors returning from patrol, an Omega carrying linens.

"I wanted to discuss some new domestic arrangements," Giselle said. She smiled. It was the same smile she'd worn in Tristan's bed. "Now that things are... shifting."

"Shifting," I repeated.

Her smile didn't waver. "You've done so much for this pack, Alina. Everyone knows that. But it's time to let others help shoulder the burden. You must be exhausted."

I said nothing.

She took another step down. Closer.

"I thought we could start by redistributing some of your responsibilities," she continued. "The household management, for instance. I've always had a talent for that sort of thing. And you have so many other duties—diplomatic duties—that require your attention."

She was framing it as a kindness. A relief.

I felt my wolf stir. Not the mournful howling of the past three days, but something colder. Sharper.

"No," I said quietly.

Giselle blinked. "I'm sorry?"

"No," I repeated. "There will be no redistribution."

Her expression flickered. Just for a second. Then the smile returned, tighter this time.

"Alina," she said, her voice dropping to something softer, more intimate, as though we were alone. "You don't have to pretend anymore. Everyone knows. You don't have to keep holding on to something that was never really yours."

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

She thought she'd won. She thought the mate bond breaking meant I would crumble, step aside, fade into the background while she took the place she believed she'd earned.

She had no idea what I was.

"Move," I said.

Her eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?"

"You're blocking the stairs," I said evenly. "Move."

For a moment, neither of us moved. The hall had gone quiet. I could feel the eyes on us—warriors, Omegas, a Beta lingering near the doorway.

Giselle's hands curled into fists at her sides.

Then she stepped forward.

And shoved me.

It wasn't a slap. It wasn't a stumble. It was two-handed, deliberate force, aimed squarely at my shoulders.

I felt my feet leave the landing.

The world tilted.

I hit the stairs hard—shoulder first, then hip, then the back of my skull against stone. My body tumbled, weightless and wrong, down one flight, then another. I tried to catch myself, but my hands couldn't find purchase. The edges of the steps slammed into my ribs, my spine, my legs.

And then—silence.

Not the silence of the world stopping.

The silence inside me.

The fragile, barely-there presence I'd been carrying for three days—the one I hadn't told Tristan about, the one I'd been protecting without even meaning to—went still.

Completely still.

I lay at the bottom of the staircase, staring up at the ceiling. My body was screaming, but the pain felt distant. Irrelevant.

The pup was gone.

I knew it the way you know the sun has set even before you look outside. The way you know winter is coming when the air changes.

Footsteps thundered down the hall. Voices rose—sharp, overlapping, frantic.

I didn't move.

Tristan appeared at the top of the stairs. His eyes swept the scene—me, crumpled at the bottom; Giselle, still on the landing, cradling her wrist.

He went to her.

"What happened?" His voice was hard. Commanding.

Giselle's face crumpled. Tears welled in her eyes. "She—she scratched me. I tried to talk to her, and she just—she attacked me, Tristan. I was only trying to help, and she—"

Her voice broke beautifully.

Tristan's jaw tightened. He looked down at me, and for a brief, flickering second, something passed across his face. Concern, maybe. Or guilt.

Then it was gone.

"Get her to the healer," he said flatly, addressing the Omegas who had gathered. "Now."

He didn't come down the stairs.

He didn't touch me.

Two Omegas lifted me carefully, their hands shaking. I didn't resist. I didn't speak.

I let them carry me.

Maren's face went pale when they brought me into the medical wing. She barked orders—clear the room, get the monitoring equipment, check her spine—but her hands were gentle as she examined me.

I stared at the ceiling.

The machines beeped. My vitals spiked—heart rate climbing, blood pressure erratic.

Maren's hands stilled over my abdomen.

She looked at me.

I looked back.

She didn't say it out loud. She didn't have to.

The pup was gone.

My face didn't move. My breathing stayed even. The machines screamed, but I stayed silent.

Maren's eyes filled with tears.

Mine stayed dry.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist and held it there until the pressure turned sharp and clean.

And in the cold, sterile quiet of the healer's ward, I made a decision.

I would not break.

I would not cry.

I would not give them the satisfaction.

I would leave.

And I would make sure they understood, eventually, exactly what they had destroyed.
