Chapter 5

The Alpha tone released like a hand lifting off my throat.

I stayed on my knees for three more seconds. Not because I had to. Because I needed to be sure my body would obey me again when I told it to move.

Around me, the banquet hall had resumed its careful hum. Conversations in low tones. The clink of silverware against china. Marley's voice, softer now, accepting the healer's attention with practiced grace.

No one was looking at me anymore.

I rose. My knees ached. My neck burned. I didn't touch either. I picked up my serving cloth from where it had fallen, folded it once, and set it on the nearest table.

Then I walked out.

No one stopped me. No one called after me. The corridor outside the banquet hall was empty and quiet, the thick stone walls muffling the sounds behind me.

I climbed the stairs to the third floor. Entered my room. Closed the door.

Sat down on the narrow bed and pressed my hands flat against my thighs.

The whisper inside me—the one that had been guiding me in fragments for weeks—spoke with absolute clarity.

*Run.*

Not a suggestion. A directive. The last instruction my dying wolf could give me before it went silent forever.

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat at the window and watched the patrol routes.

Ironveil's security ran on a strict rotation—three-hour shifts, overlapping coverage at the main gates and cardinal points, lighter presence along the eastern perimeter where the forest was dense and the neighboring pack's territory provided a natural buffer.

I'd never paid attention to it before. As Luna, I hadn't needed to. Now I watched the patterns emerge like clockwork. The Gamma's unit at the north gate. The Delta patrols sweeping the western boundary. The gap—seventeen minutes, twice per shift—where the eastern marker went unwatched during changeover.

Seventeen minutes.

I counted them three times to be sure.

The second night, I tested the corridors.

My wolf was dormant. I registered as functionally human now—no supernatural scent signature, no aura, nothing that would ping a sentry's instincts from a distance. I moved through the pack house like furniture. Invisible.

I walked the route I would need. Down the back stairwell. Through the kitchens after the staff had retired. Out the service door that led to the storage sheds. Across the open ground to the treeline.

No one saw me.

I made it back to my room before dawn and sat at the window again, watching the sky lighten.

The whisper was quiet now. Waiting.

On the third night, I moved.

I wore dark clothes. Soft-soled shoes. I carried nothing. No bag, no supplies, nothing that would slow me down or make noise.

The pack house was silent. I descended the back stairwell, my footsteps soundless on the stone. The kitchens were empty. The service door opened without a creak—I'd oiled the hinges the night before during my test run.

The night air hit my face, cold and clean.

I crossed the open ground quickly. Reached the treeline. Paused.

The whisper threaded through me, directional. Not words. Just a pull. East. Toward the gap in the patrol rotation.

I moved.

The forest was dense here, the undergrowth thick enough to muffle sound. I couldn't shift. Couldn't run at supernatural speed. I was human-paced, navigating by moonlight and the faint pull of my dying wolf.

But I was moving. And no one had seen me leave.

The eastern territorial marker appeared through the trees—a stone post carved with Ironveil's emblem, the boundary line marked by scent markers I could no longer detect.

Beyond it was unclaimed forest. Neutral ground. No pack authority.

Freedom.

I was fifteen seconds from crossing when he stepped out of the shadows.

Marcus Hale. Greyson's Gamma. The wolf who had intercepted me at this same border weeks ago, when I'd tried to send word to the Council.

He stood between me and the marker, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp.

"Ellie," he said quietly.

I stopped.

He didn't move toward me. Didn't reach for me. Just stood there, his arms loose at his sides, his expression unreadable in the dim light.

"I mind-linked the Alpha," he said. "Two minutes ago. He's already on his way."

The whisper inside me went silent.

Not with despair. With something colder.

*You knew this might happen. You prepared for this.*

I had. Not consciously. But some part of me—the part that had been building a record, cataloging faces, counting patrol gaps—had known that getting caught was a possibility.

I just hadn't expected it to feel like this.

Like the door closing. Like the lock turning. Like the last exit sealing shut.

Marcus shifted his weight slightly. "You should come back with me now. Before he gets here."

I looked past him at the territorial marker. So close. Fifteen seconds of running. Maybe less.

But my wolf was dormant. I was human-slow. And Marcus was a Gamma—trained, fast, stronger than I could ever be without my wolf.

I would never make it.

"Ellie," Marcus said again. His tone was almost gentle. "Don't make this harder."

I met his eyes.

And then I heard it.

Footsteps. Multiple sets. Coming fast through the forest behind me.

Greyson's voice cut through the trees, sharp and commanding. "Hold her there."

Marcus's expression didn't change. But his posture shifted—subtly, just enough to block my path more completely.

I turned.

Greyson emerged from the treeline with four warriors at his back. His cedar-and-iron scent hit me like a wall. His eyes locked on mine, cold and flat.

He stopped ten feet away.

"Going somewhere?" he asked.
