Chapter 3

Millie arrived on the third morning after the council meeting.

I was adjusting Arthur's IV drip when I heard her jasmine scent in the hallway. Two warriors followed her—young ones, recent graduates from training. They stood just inside the doorway, watching.

"Valentina." Millie's voice was soft, concerned. "I thought I'd check in. See if there's anything I can help with."

I didn't turn around. "The patient is stable."

"Of course." She moved closer. I heard her footsteps on the tile. "But two years is such a long time. And with no improvement... have you considered that perhaps the kindest thing would be to—"

"No."

She stopped. "I only meant—"

"I know what you meant." I finished adjusting the drip and turned to face her. "Arthur Richardson's heart beats. His lungs function. His brain shows activity. That makes him a patient, not a candidate for withdrawal."

Millie's smile was gentle. Understanding. "I admire your dedication. But sometimes a healer has to accept when a case is beyond reach. Prolonging false hope isn't kindness."

The two warriors shifted their weight. One of them—a young female named Iris—had broken her leg in a training accident last year. I'd set the bone myself. Sat with her through three nights of fever. She wouldn't meet my eyes now.

Millie moved toward the IV stand. Her hand extended, reaching for the line. "If you'd let me examine the setup—"

I stepped between her and the bed.

The movement was fast. Deliberate. My body blocked her access completely.

"Any interference with this patient's treatment protocol," I said quietly, "will trigger a formal Luna Accord complaint requiring Lycan Council review. That includes unauthorized examination, adjustment of medication, or consultation without the primary healer's explicit consent."

Millie's hand froze in mid-air.

For one fraction of a second, her face changed.

The soft concern vanished. Something harder surfaced—cold, calculating, and furious. Her eyes narrowed. Her mouth tightened into a thin line. It was the face of someone who had just been blocked from something she wanted very badly.

Then she blinked.

The sweetness returned like a mask sliding back into place. She lowered her hand and stepped back, her smile apologetic.

"Of course," she said. "I didn't mean to overstep. I was only trying to help."

"Your concern is noted."

She looked at the two warriors. "Come on. We should let Valentina work."

They left. Millie's jasmine scent lingered in the air after her footsteps faded.

I stood there for a long moment, my hand resting on Arthur's IV stand. My heart was pounding. Not from fear. From certainty.

I had just seen the real face beneath the performance.

And it confirmed everything.

I pulled out my cipher journal and added the incident. Date. Time. Witnesses. Millie's exact words about withdrawal. The reach toward the IV line. The cold expression that surfaced for one unguarded second.

Evidence.

That night, Barnaby brought me the news about the council meeting.

"Liam's calling a formal assembly," he said. He set down a container of stew but didn't leave. "Tomorrow. He's going to challenge the Accord."

I looked up from Arthur's chart. "On what grounds?"

"Acting against the pack's interests." Barnaby's voice was flat. "He's saying your presence is causing division. That you're being obstinate. That the kindest thing for everyone would be for you to accept the buyout and leave."

I set down the chart. "Who's backing him?"

"Most of the ranked wolves. Beta Derek. Some of the warriors." Barnaby hesitated. "People you've healed, Valentina. People who owe you their lives."

I pressed my thumb against my pulse point. Steady. Still steady.

"Will you be there?" I asked.

"Omegas don't get a voice in council." His expression was bitter. "But yeah. I'll be there."

The assembly was held in the main hall. I walked in to find every ranked wolf already seated. Liam stood at the head table with Millie beside him. Beta Derek sat to his right. Gamma Soren to his left.

I took my place at the respondent's position. Alone.

Liam didn't waste time.

"Valentina Mendez invoked the Luna Accord three weeks ago," he announced. His voice carried through the hall. "She staked her hereditary bloodline on waking a patient who has shown zero improvement in two years. She refuses to accept a generous settlement. She refuses to leave pack lands. Her continued presence is causing division and embarrassment."

He looked directly at me.

"The Luna Accord was designed to protect healers acting in good faith," he continued. "Not to shield obstinacy. Not to enable bad judgment. I am invoking the clause that allows revocation when a healer acts against the pack's interests."

Murmurs rippled through the assembled wolves.

I looked at the faces around the room. Warriors whose bones I'd set. Mothers whose children I'd saved. Wolves I'd sat with through fevers and infections and the hundred small emergencies that came with pack life.

Not one of them spoke.

Iris, the young warrior with the healed leg, stared at her hands.

From the back of the room, I heard a low growl.

Barnaby. Standing in the Omega section. His lips pulled back slightly. The growl wasn't loud. But it was there.

No one noticed. Or if they did, they didn't acknowledge it.

Liam waited. "Do you have anything to say, Valentina?"

I met his eyes across the room.

I said nothing.

The silence stretched. Liam's expression shifted—annoyance, then something harder. He'd expected me to argue. To defend myself. To give him something he could use.

I gave him nothing.

After a long moment, he turned to the council. "We'll vote on revocation in three days. Until then, Valentina Mendez remains under Accord protection. But that protection is conditional. Any further obstruction will be grounds for immediate expulsion."

The assembly dismissed.

I walked out of the hall with my head up and my hands steady.

Barnaby fell into step beside me once we were clear of the main building. He didn't say anything. Neither did I.

When we reached the medical wing, I went straight to my cipher journal and added every name. Every wolf who had sat in silence. Every witness to Liam's threat.

The evidence file was getting thick.

That night, I sat beside Arthur's bed and felt it.

A surge of heat through my chest. Sharp and sudden. Not pain. Fury.

My wolf.

She wasn't speaking. Not words. But the sensation was unmistakable—a flood of rage and defiance that made my hands shake and my vision blur for one disorienting second.

She was there. Still silent. But present. Real.

I pressed both hands flat against my thighs and breathed.

One measured breath. Two. Three.

Then I spoke to her directly for the first time since the rejection.

"Hold on," I whispered. "Just hold on."

The fury ebbed. The heat faded.

But the silence that followed was different.

Not collapsed. Not absent.

Coiled.

Waiting.

I looked at Arthur's still face. His chest rose and fell. The monitors beeped their steady rhythm.

Under my hand, his pulse was stronger.

I had three days before the vote.

I went back to the supply logs and kept reading.
