Chapter 4

Connor Richardson arrived without warning.

I was checking Arthur's blood oxygen levels when I heard footsteps in the hallway. Heavy. Deliberate. The kind that announced authority before the person even entered the room.

The former Alpha filled the doorway. He was older than I remembered—or maybe I'd just stopped looking at him closely during the years I'd spent healing his pack. His hair was silver. His face was lined. But his posture was still straight, still commanding.

He didn't greet me. He looked past me to the bed.

Arthur lay motionless. The monitors beeped their steady rhythm. Connor stared at his nephew for a long moment. His expression was carefully neutral—not grief, not guilt, but something that looked like discomfort. Like a man who had avoided a room because of what he might have to acknowledge inside it.

"Valentina," he said finally.

"Former Alpha." I kept my voice respectful.

He stepped into the room. His eyes swept over the monitors, the IV stand, the neat rows of supplies I'd organized on the counter. He didn't touch anything.

"You've been here a long time," he said.

"Two years. Every day."

"And no improvement."

I pressed my thumb against my pulse point. "His vitals are stable. His brain activity is consistent. There's—"

"Valentina." Connor's voice was measured. Formal. The weight of institutional history in every syllable. "Your service to this pack has been valued. No one disputes that. But the situation has changed."

I waited.

"Liam has made you a generous offer," Connor continued. "Territory buyout. Safe passage. A clean separation. You should accept it and go quietly."

I looked at Arthur's still face. His chest rose and fell. Under my hand, resting on his wrist, his pulse beat steady and strong. Stronger than it had been three weeks ago. Stronger than anyone else had noticed.

"Would you like to review his latest bloodwork?" I asked.

Connor blinked. "What?"

"His blood panels. I have three weeks of data showing gradual improvement in metabolic markers. Small changes, but consistent. I can show you—"

"That won't be necessary."

I met his eyes. "Are you sure? Because the data suggests—"

"I said it won't be necessary." His tone sharpened slightly. Then he caught himself and softened. "You're a dedicated healer, Valentina. But sometimes dedication becomes... obstinacy. Sometimes we have to accept what we cannot change."

He turned toward the door.

He didn't touch Arthur's hand. Didn't look back at the bed. Just walked out with the same deliberate footsteps he'd entered with.

I stood there for a long moment after he left. Then I pulled out my cipher journal and added the visit. Date. Time. Exact words. The fact that Connor had come to the medical wing for the first time in two years—not to check on his nephew, but to tell me to leave.

I underlined that detail twice.

Then I went back to Arthur's bloodwork and continued my analysis.

The demonstration happened two days later.

I was restocking supplies when I heard voices from the training yard. Loud. Excited. I walked to the medical wing's side door and looked out.

Millie stood in the center of a circle of pack members. A young warrior—Marcus, I recognized him—sat on a bench with his arm extended. Blood ran down his forearm from a deep gash. Training accident. Common enough.

Millie knelt beside him with a small kit open at her feet. She worked quickly, her movements practiced. She cleaned the wound. Applied a pale green salve. Wrapped it with clean gauze.

The salve was mine. My formula. Comfrey and calendula suspended in beeswax. The exact ratio I'd perfected over three years.

Liam stood at the edge of the circle, watching. When Millie finished, he stepped forward and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Excellent work," he said. His voice carried across the yard. "This is the kind of skill our pack needs. Innovation. Dedication."

Marcus flexed his fingers experimentally. "It doesn't hurt anymore."

"The formula works fast," Millie said. Her voice was gentle. Modest. "I'm just glad I could help."

Several wolves murmured approval. One of them—an older female named Ruth—said something I couldn't hear. Millie smiled and ducked her head.

I watched the pack's perception shift in real time. Saw it in their faces. In the way they looked at Millie with something close to admiration. In the way no one looked toward the medical wing.

My stolen reputation calcifying into accepted fact.

Footsteps behind me. I didn't turn.

"That formula smells wrong when she handles it," Barnaby said quietly.

I glanced at him. "What?"

He frowned. Shook his head slightly. "I don't know. Like something borrowed. Not hers."

I looked back at the training yard. Millie was packing up her kit. Liam's hand still rested on her shoulder. Possessive. Proud.

"You're rogue-born," I said. "You read things other wolves miss."

Barnaby's frown deepened. "I don't understand what I'm reading. Just that it's... off."

I understood. His instincts were picking up what the ranked wolves had been trained to ignore. The scent of fraud. The wrongness of stolen knowledge in the wrong hands.

Millie glanced toward the medical wing. For one brief second, our eyes met across the distance.

She smiled. Sweet. Victorious.

Then she turned back to Liam and said something that made him laugh.

I stepped back inside and closed the door.

Barnaby followed. "Valentina—"

"I need wolfsbane-neutralizing herbs," I said. "From the eastern cache you mentioned. Can you source them?"

He didn't ask why. "How much?"

"Enough for a full cleansing protocol. High concentration."

"I'll have them by morning."

After he left, I pulled out my evidence file and added a new section. Millie's public demonstration. The stolen formula. The pack's response. Liam's endorsement.

Evidence.

Then I returned to Arthur's bedside and placed both hands on his chest.

I closed my eyes and reached for the hereditary gift my mother had passed to me. The one I'd spent five years pouring into ungrateful warriors. The one Liam had treated as a utility.

I pushed it deeper this time. Past the surface pulse. Past the steady heartbeat. Down into the buried core where his Lycan aura lay dormant.

I felt it. Faint. Flickering. But there.

I pressed harder.

Heat flooded through my palms. My wolf stirred in my chest—still silent, but present. The heat built. My hands trembled. My vision blurred.

Something shifted beneath my touch. A pulse. Stronger than before. Almost—

Warmth dripped onto my upper lip.

I pulled back. Touched my face. My fingers came away red.

Nosebleed.

I grabbed a tissue and pressed it to my nose. Tilted my head back. Waited for the bleeding to stop.

When it did, I checked Arthur's monitors.

His heart rate had increased. Just slightly. Just enough.

I wiped my face clean. Steadied my breathing.

Then I placed my hands on his chest again and continued.

The supply restriction notice arrived the next morning.

Derek Moss delivered it personally. He handed me a sealed envelope without meeting my eyes.

I opened it.

Effective immediately, my access to the pack's medical stores was limited to basic supplies only. Advanced ingredients—the ones I needed for Arthur's treatment—required Alpha approval for each individual request.

I looked at Derek. "This violates Accord protection."

"It's a resource management decision," he said. His voice was flat. "Not a restriction on your healing work."

"I need those supplies to complete my healing charge."

"Then submit a request. The Alpha will review it."

I drafted the request that afternoon. Formal. Detailed. Cited the exact Accord clause that protected my right to necessary resources.

I handed it to Derek before sunset.

He returned it the next morning. Unopened.

No explanation. No response. Just the sealed envelope with my own handwriting on the front.

The message was clear. Liam wasn't going to confront me directly. He was going to make my position untenable through attrition. Wear me down until I abandoned the Accord claim voluntarily.

I set the unopened letter on my desk.

That evening, another notice arrived. This one revoked my right to attend pack meals. Effective immediately. No explanation provided.

I read it twice. Then I filed it with the rest of the evidence.

Barnaby brought dinner an hour later. Stew. Bread. Water.

He set it down without comment.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded. Started to leave. Then stopped.

"I can source most of what you need," he said quietly. "The eastern cache. The border contacts. It won't be official. But it'll be there."

I looked at him. This scarred, rogue-born wolf who had been relegated to Omega labor his entire life. Who had learned to survive by reading what others missed. Who brought me food every night because I was the only ranked wolf who had ever treated him like a person.

"The wolfsbane-neutralizing herbs," I said. "Can you bring them tomorrow?"

"Already done. They're in the supply closet. Second shelf."

I pressed my thumb against my pulse point. "Barnaby—"

"Don't thank me." His voice was rough. "Just wake him up."

He left before I could respond.

I ate the stew. Then I went to the supply closet and found the herbs exactly where he'd said. Fresh. High quality. More than I'd asked for.

I carried them back to Arthur's room and began preparing the cleansing protocol.

Three days until the vote. Three days to finish what I'd started.

I placed my hands on Arthur's chest and felt the buried pulse of his Lycan aura flicker beneath my touch.

Stronger. Closer.

Almost there.

I closed my eyes and pushed deeper.
