Chapter 2

Barnaby started showing up after his border patrol shifts.

The first time, I looked up from Arthur's chart to find him standing in the doorway with a stack of clean linens. He didn't say anything. Just set them on the counter and left.

The second time, he brought water. Fresh, cold, in a sealed container. I hadn't asked for it. I hadn't asked for anything.

The third time, he brought food.

I was bent over Arthur's IV line, adjusting the drip rate, when I heard footsteps behind me. Barnaby set a covered plate on the desk. Soup. Bread. Still warm.

"You forget to eat," he said quietly.

I straightened. "I eat."

"Not today you didn't." He gestured at the plate. "Eat it before it gets cold."

I wanted to argue. But my stomach chose that moment to betray me with a low growl. Barnaby's mouth twitched—not quite a smile, but close.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded and turned to go.

"Barnaby."

He stopped.

"Why are you doing this?"

He was quiet for a long moment. His hand rested on the doorframe. The scar on his shoulder—the one I'd treated two years ago without being asked—was visible beneath his shirt collar.

"You're the only ranked wolf who ever treated me like a person," he said finally. "Not a tool. Not an Omega. A person."

He left before I could respond.

I ate the soup. It was good. Better than anything I'd made for myself in weeks.

Barnaby kept coming. Every night after his shift. Sometimes with supplies. Sometimes just to check if I needed anything. We didn't talk much. He wasn't a talker. Neither was I.

But on the fifth night, he lingered.

I was reviewing Arthur's latest blood panel when Barnaby cleared his throat.

"Can I ask you something?"

I looked up. "Go ahead."

"Liam's wolf." Barnaby's voice was careful. "It never smelled right to me. Not the way a real Alpha's should."

I set down the blood panel. "What do you mean?"

"I don't know how to explain it." He frowned, searching for words. "An Alpha's scent should be... solid. Certain. Like bedrock. Liam's always had this edge to it. Like something trying too hard. Performing."

I thought about that. About the five years I'd spent beside Liam. About the Alpha tone he used as a first resort. About the way he adjusted his insignia before delivering bad news.

"You're rogue-born," I said. "You learned to read wolves without pack protection."

"Yeah." Barnaby's expression was wary. "Does that matter?"

"It means your instincts aren't trained to ignore what pack hierarchy tells you to ignore." I pressed my thumb against my pulse point. "You see what's actually there."

Barnaby nodded slowly. "For what it's worth... your wolf never smelled wrong. Even now, with the bond broken. There's something still there. Quiet, but there."

I felt it then. A faint flutter in my chest. Not my wolf's voice—not yet—but a stirring. Like something turning over in sleep.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

After Barnaby left, I sat with that flutter for a long time. My wolf wasn't gone. Just silent. Waiting.

I went back to Arthur's chart with something that felt almost like hope.

The news about Millie's presentation reached me three days later.

I was checking Arthur's vitals when Soren Vale appeared in the doorway. The Gamma looked uncomfortable. He shifted his weight and wouldn't quite meet my eyes.

"There was a presentation at the training assembly," he said. "Millie Harper. She presented some advanced healing formulas. Said she developed them herself."

I kept my hand steady on Arthur's wrist. "What kind of formulas?"

"Bone-setting compounds. Fever reduction blends. A salve for deep tissue scarring." Soren recited them like a list. "Liam endorsed her publicly. Called her a gifted healer."

I knew those formulas. Every single one.

The bone-setting compound used wintergreen and arnica in a ratio I'd spent two years perfecting. The fever blend incorporated willow bark and elderflower in proportions my mother had taught me before she died. The scarring salve was my own creation—comfrey and calendula suspended in beeswax, the exact recipe I'd used on Barnaby's shoulder.

They were in my private journal. The one I kept in the locked drawer of my desk.

The one Millie had access to during her "inspections" of the medical wing.

"Thank you for telling me," I said.

Soren hesitated. "Valentina—"

"That will be all, Gamma."

He left.

I finished checking Arthur's vitals with mechanical precision. Then I walked to my desk, unlocked the drawer, and pulled out my journal.

I flipped through the pages. Every formula Soren had described was there, written in my hand, dated over the past three years. I checked the desk lock. No signs of forced entry. But Millie was clever. She wouldn't have needed to break it. A photograph would have been enough.

I pulled out a fresh notebook and started writing.

Date. Time. Location. Witnesses. I listed every wolf who had attended the training assembly. Cross-referenced the timing against the medical wing's security footage access logs. Noted every instance Millie had entered the wing unsupervised.

I wrote in cipher—the personal shorthand I'd developed in medical school. No one else could read it. Not even Liam.

The evidence file grew. Page after page of careful documentation. I didn't write in anger. I wrote with the same precision I used for patient charts. Every detail. Every timestamp. Every witness name.

When I finished, I locked the new journal in a different drawer. One Millie didn't know about.

Then I went back to Arthur's bedside and returned to the supply logs.

The wolfsbane discrepancy had been nagging at me for days. The medical wing used wolfsbane in controlled doses for certain treatments—pain management for warriors with Lycan-adjacent bloodlines, sedation for violent shift episodes. It was heavily regulated. Every draw required authorization.

I'd been cross-referencing the supply logs against the treatment records. The numbers didn't match.

Wolfsbane drawn at regular intervals. Signed out under names I didn't recognize. Authorization codes that didn't correspond to any current medical staff.

But twice—just twice—Beta Derek Moss's code appeared in the falsified entries.

I photographed the log pages with my phone. Added them to my cipher journal. Then I traced the timeline backward.

The wolfsbane draws started two years ago. Right after Arthur's attack. Regular intervals. Always the same amount. Just enough to keep a Lycan wolf suppressed without killing the host.

I sat back in my chair.

Someone had been dosing Arthur. Deliberately. Continuously. For two years.

Keeping him comatose.

I looked at Arthur's still face. His chest rose and fell. The monitors beeped their steady rhythm.

But beneath my hand, pressed against his wrist, I felt it.

His pulse was stronger. Fractionally. Almost imperceptibly.

But stronger.

I pressed my thumb against my own pulse point. My heart was racing.

I needed one more link. One piece of evidence connecting the supply chain to a direct order. Something that would hold up before a tribunal.

I went back to the logs and started again from the beginning.

This time, I was looking for a pattern. A signature. Anything that would tell me who gave the order.

My wolf stirred again in my chest. Still silent. But present.

Waiting.

I kept reading.
