Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, under a full moon I'd waited five years to stand beneath.

I stood in the ceremonial clearing with every wolf in Ironridge Pack watching. The air smelled like pine and woodsmoke. Liam stood three feet in front of me in his formal Alpha coat. I could see the ceremonial mark oil glistening on his collar. My wolf pressed against my ribs, humming with anticipation. After five years of waiting, the Mate Ceremony was finally here.

Liam's mouth opened.

"I, Liam Richardson, Alpha of Ironridge Pack, reject you, Valentina Mendez, as my mate."

The words came out in Alpha tone. Formal. Final. Absolute.

The half-formed mark on my neck—the one he'd given me three years ago as a promise—went cold. Not painful. Just cold, like someone had pressed an ice chip directly against the nerve. Then the cold spread inward, through my chest, into the space where the bond was supposed to seal tonight.

My wolf released one howl inside my mind. High and disbelieving, like a question she already knew the answer to.

Then she went silent.

Not dormant. Not resting. Silent, like a door slamming shut in an empty room, leaving me alone in my own head for the first time since I was sixteen.

I couldn't feel her.

I stood there with three hundred wolves watching and I couldn't feel my own wolf.

Liam stepped aside.

Millie Harper walked out from behind him.

Her jasmine scent hit me first—thick and sweet, curling through the night air like smoke. She wore a white ceremonial dress, the kind a Luna wears. Her hand slid into Liam's. Her smile was soft and grateful, like she'd just received a gift she hadn't expected.

"Millie Harper is my chosen mate," Liam announced. His voice carried across the clearing. "The Moon Goddess has blessed us with a true bond."

I looked at the assembled pack. Every wolf I'd healed over five years. Warriors whose broken bones I'd set. Mothers whose fevers I'd broken at three in the morning. Pups I'd treated for colic and croup and the hundred small illnesses that came with growing up.

Not one of them spoke.

Not one of them met my eyes.

Beta Derek Moss stepped forward. He held a sealed envelope. He didn't look at my face when he handed it to me.

"Territory buyout and formal exit documents," he said quietly. "Alpha Liam is offering you a generous settlement. You have seventy-two hours to vacate pack lands."

I looked down at the envelope. My hands were steady. That surprised me. The mark on my neck was still cold. My wolf was still silent. But my hands were steady.

I extended my claws.

The envelope shredded in three clean strokes. Paper fluttered to the ground like snow.

"I invoke the Luna Accord," I said.

My voice didn't shake. That surprised me too.

Derek's head snapped up. Behind him, I heard wolves shifting their weight. The Luna Accord was old law. Older than Ironridge Pack. Older than any Alpha currently living.

"I stake my hereditary healing bloodline," I continued, "on my right to remain and complete an unfinished healing charge. Arthur Richardson, comatose in the medical wing for two years. No healer has reached him. I claim the right to try."

Liam laughed.

It was a real laugh, not a polite one. He looked at Derek, then at the assembled pack, like he was sharing a joke.

"Arthur Richardson," Liam repeated. "The comatose Lycan who hasn't opened his eyes in two years. You're staking your bloodline on waking a dead man?"

"He's not dead," I said. "His heart beats. That makes him my patient."

"Fine." Liam's smile was sharp. "Invoke the Accord. Waste your time. When he doesn't wake—and he won't—you'll leave with nothing. No buyout. No settlement. Just exile."

He turned to Millie and offered her his arm.

I watched them walk back toward the pack house. The assembled wolves parted to let them through. Some of them were already murmuring congratulations. I heard Millie's soft laugh, light and musical.

I turned and walked in the opposite direction.

Toward the medical wing.

Past rows of wolves who suddenly found the ground very interesting.

My boots crunched on gravel. The cold mark on my neck pulsed with every step, a reminder of what I'd just lost. My wolf's silence was a weight in my chest, like breathing with a collapsed lung.

I pushed open the medical wing door.

The hallway was dark except for the emergency lighting. My footsteps echoed on tile. I walked past the empty recovery rooms, past the supply closet I'd reorganized last month, past the desk where I'd spent a thousand sleepless nights.

Arthur Richardson's room was at the end of the hall.

I opened the door.

He lay on the bed exactly as I'd left him this morning. Motionless. The monitors beeped their steady rhythm. His chest rose and fell with mechanical precision. His face was still, peaceful, like he was sleeping.

I'd been tending him for two years. Every day. Every night when my shift allowed. Checking vitals. Adjusting IVs. Monitoring the flatline readings that never changed.

No other healer came anymore. They'd all given up.

I walked to his bedside and placed my hand on his wrist. His pulse was there, steady and slow. His skin was warm.

"I just staked everything on you," I said quietly.

He didn't answer.

Of course he didn't.

I pulled up the chair and sat down. The cold mark on my neck throbbed. My wolf's silence pressed against my ribs. I was alone in a dark room with a comatose patient and no bond and no pack and no wolf's voice to tell me I'd done the right thing.

I opened his chart and started reading.

I had seventy-two hours to find something every other healer had missed.

I pressed my thumb against my own pulse point—a habit from medical training, checking my own stability before I checked anyone else's—and started from the beginning.
