Chapter 2

The grand hall had never looked more beautiful.

Silver Moon's pack members filled every row of polished wooden chairs, dressed in their finest. Candles lined the ceremonial table in neat rows, their flames steady and warm. White flowers — Emely's choice, I was sure — draped every surface. The whole room smelled of her perfume and Trevor's authority and the particular kind of celebration that happens when everyone agrees not to look too closely at what they're celebrating.

I walked in through the side door.

I was still wearing my healer's clothes. The ones I'd put on at dawn when I dragged myself to the infirmary. There was blood on the hem — mine — and I hadn't changed because changing would have meant deciding to stay, and I hadn't decided that until about twenty minutes ago.

The murmur started near the back and rolled forward like a wave.

I didn't look at the crowd. I looked at the table.

Trevor stood at the head of it, dressed in his Alpha formal wear, every inch the picture of pack authority. Emely was beside him in white, her hand resting on his arm, her smile already faltering at the edges as she tracked my approach. The officiant — Elder Holt, who had presided over my own mate ceremony ten years ago — went very still.

I reached the table.

I set down the two documents I'd been carrying. The rejection papers, signed in my precise healer's handwriting. And beneath them, the medical discharge consent — my formal surrender of the Silver Moon Pack's claim on my healing services, witnessed and dated.

The room went completely silent.

"Madison." Trevor's voice was low. A warning.

I looked up at him for the first time. Really looked. I tried to find something in his face that would make this harder — some flicker of the man I'd thought I was bonded to, some ghost of the decade I'd given him. There was nothing there except fury and the particular wounded pride of a man who had never once been publicly defied.

His aura hit me like a wall.

I felt it the way I always felt it — that suffocating pressure, that frequency designed to reach past thought and straight into submission. Every pack member in the room flinched. A few of the lower-ranked wolves actually stepped back.

Sera lifted her head.

For the first time in months — maybe years — I felt her clearly. Not the folded-inward quiet she'd retreated into, not the wounded silence of the small hours. She was present. She was steady. And she was done.

The aura pressed down.

I let it pass through me like wind through an open window.

"Return to your room." Trevor's Alpha tone, full force. The command that had never once failed to move me. "Now, Madison."

I heard myself speak. My voice came out calm. Quieter than I expected, but it carried — the room was that silent.

"I, Madison Payne, former Luna of the Silver Moon Pack, reject you, Trevor Marshall, Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, as my mate." The formal words. The ones I'd read in the documents a hundred times in the last hour, making sure I had them right. "I reject this bond, this pack, and every claim you hold over me. From this moment, we are nothing to each other."

The pain came immediately. It always did, with rejection — a tearing sensation somewhere below the sternum, deep and structural, like something load-bearing giving way. I heard Trevor make a sound I'd never heard from him before. Something involuntary.

I didn't stop moving.

I turned and walked toward the grand doors. Behind me, I heard the eruption — voices, Trevor's voice above them all, Emely's sharp intake of breath. I didn't turn around. The doors were heavy and I pushed through them with both hands and then I was outside, and the night air hit my face, and I kept walking.

I walked until the pack house lights were behind me. Until the noise faded. Until the territory markers gave way to the rough, unmapped dark of the Outlands.

I walked until my legs stopped working reliably, which took longer than I expected and not as long as I needed.

I was sitting against a tree, pressing two fingers to my wrist out of pure habit, when I heard them.

Four of them. Rogues, moving through the brush with the particular aggression of a patrol that had already decided what it was going to do. I got to my feet slowly, hands visible, and then I smelled it — underneath the sweat and the hostility and the wet earth, something else. Something wrong. Infected tissue, deep and festering, the specific rot of a wound that had been ignored too long.

One of them was a pup. Barely adolescent, hanging back behind the adults, trying not to show how much pain he was in.

I looked at the woman at the front of the group — older, scarred, watching me with flat, assessing eyes.

"I'm a healer," I said. "And that boy behind you has maybe two days before that wound goes septic."

Silence.

"Let me help him," I said. "Then you can decide what to do with me."

The woman's eyes moved to the pup. Back to me. Something shifted in her expression — not warmth, not yet, but the particular recalculation of someone who has just been handed an unexpected variable.

"You've got one hour," she said.
