Chapter 2

I walked for three hours before my legs gave out.

I sat on a fallen log at the edge of a creek and stared at the water. The sky was fully light now. Morning. The blood on my dress had dried stiff.

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. The habit I couldn't break.

Behind me, miles back, I felt it. The wards cracking. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just a slow, steady dissolution, like ice melting section by section.

Ironveil's eastern border was collapsing.

I knew it would. I'd known the moment I crossed the line. My aura had been the only thing holding those wards intact for seven years. Bradley never understood that. He thought the wards were a feature of the territory—stone and ritual and Alpha authority. He didn't know they were me.

I sat there and listened to the forest. Birds. Wind. The creek.

No screaming yet. That would come later, when the rogues realized the barrier was gone.

I should have felt something. Guilt, maybe. Regret.

I felt nothing.

I stood. My legs were steadier now. I had a direction. Silvercrest territory was northeast, two days' walk if I kept moving. I had intelligence Bradley never thought to protect: patrol routes, ward vulnerabilities, settlement locations. Information the Lycan Court would value.

I started walking.

---

By nightfall, the reports would have reached Bradley.

I wasn't there to see it, but I knew how it would go. His Gamma—Rhys—would burst into the ceremonial wing where Bradley was still with Alyssa, his face pale, his voice tight. "Alpha, the eastern wards are failing. Rogues breached the perimeter an hour ago. Three settlements overrun."

Bradley would freeze. He'd demand details. Rhys would give them: families fleeing inward, warriors dispatched to reinforce the line, physical defenses insufficient without the supernatural barrier.

Bradley would refuse to connect it to me. He'd insist the wards were structural. He'd blame the warriors, the patrol schedules, anything but the she-wolf he'd rejected twelve hours earlier.

Alyssa would stand beside him in the Luna cloak, her hands clasped, her face carefully concerned. She'd suggest sending more warriors. Bradley would agree. He'd issue orders. He'd sound confident.

But the wards wouldn't come back.

Because I wasn't there.

---

Alyssa moved into the Luna quarters that same morning.

She walked through the rooms—my rooms, the ones I'd occupied for seven years without the title to match—and touched everything. The bed. The desk. The window that overlooked the eastern forest.

She opened the wardrobe. My clothes were still there. She pulled them out, one by one, and piled them on the floor.

Then she unpacked her own things.

She was careful. Methodical. She hung her dresses in the space mine had occupied. She set her jewelry on the vanity. She erased me.

But the scent was wrong.

Bradley came to her that night. He stepped into the quarters and stopped. His nostrils flared. He was expecting the deep musk of a fated bond—the scent that had pulled him to her in the first place.

Instead, he smelled earth. Stale. Sour.

Alyssa noticed his hesitation. She turned, her expression soft, vulnerable. "Bradley?"

He frowned. "Your scent—"

"I know." She crossed to him, her hands reaching for his. "I've been so stressed. The ceremony, everything happening so fast. I think it's affecting me."

He wanted to believe her. It was easier than the alternative.

"You're sure?" he asked.

She nodded. Tears welled in her eyes. Perfectly timed. "I'm sorry. I know this isn't what you expected."

He pulled her close. The mark on her neck pulsed faintly—a bond already made, already sealed. He couldn't undo it now.

"It's fine," he said. His voice was tight. "It'll pass."

But the scent didn't change.

Later that night, Alyssa's phone buzzed. A message from Jalen.

*Need supplies. Weapons intel. Patrol schedules. Or I talk.*

She stared at the screen. Her hands shook.

She deleted the message and started making a list.

---

I reached Silvercrest's border at dusk on the second day.

I was exhausted. My dress was still bloodstained. I had no belongings. No pack. No bond.

I walked up to the checkpoint. Two guards stepped forward, their postures alert but not hostile.

"State your business," the taller one said.

I opened my mouth to answer.

Then the wind shifted.

I smelled it before I saw him. Cedar and cold air before snow. Clean. Particular. Unmistakable.

My wolf—silent for so long I'd believed she didn't exist—stirred.

Not stirred. Surged.

The presence inside me slammed against the cage again, harder this time, and for the first time in my life, I heard a voice that wasn't mine.

*Mate.*

I froze.

A man stepped out from the trees. Tall. Dark hair. Eyes that caught the fading light. He was mid-stride when the wind reached him.

He stopped.

His head turned toward me. His nostrils flared. His entire body went rigid.

I knew what he was smelling. Winter jasmine. The scent I'd carried my whole life, the one Bradley never commented on, the one I didn't know was supposed to mean something.

The man's eyes locked on mine.

Lycan Prince Dominic Ashford.

I recognized him from the scar on his jaw. The one he got the night I shielded him. The night my wolf went silent.

He took a step forward. His wolf was visible in his eyes—gold bleeding into the edges, the Lycan bloodline unmistakable.

I felt the mate-pull hit me like a fist to the chest. Stronger than anything I'd felt with Bradley. Deeper. Biological.

It terrified me.

I stepped back.

Dominic stopped. His jaw tightened. He scented the rejection-wound on my bond-site—the place where Bradley's mark should have been and wasn't. His eyes darkened.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't move closer.

He just waited.

I forced myself to speak. My voice came out steadier than I expected.

"I'm Skylar Hill. Former Luna of Ironveil Pack. I'm here to offer intelligence on exposed territorial defenses in exchange for Lycan Court protection."

I didn't say *mate*. I didn't acknowledge the pull. I set terms.

"Alliance first," I said. "Bond later."

Dominic's expression didn't change. But something in his eyes shifted. Respect, maybe. Or recognition.

He inclined his head. Once. Formal.

"Accepted," he said. His voice was low, deliberate. "You'll have guest quarters in the Silvercrest compound. No expectations. No obligations."

He turned to the guards. "Escort her. Personally."

Then he looked back at me. His gaze held mine for three seconds.

He didn't touch me. He didn't ask for more.

He just stepped aside and let me pass.
