Chapter 3

Gareth Cole had always been good at his job.

That's what I thought, anyway, back when I still lived at Ironveil. He followed Bradley's orders without question. He managed the warrior rotations. He kept the pack house running smoothly. He was the perfect Beta—loyal, efficient, invisible.

I didn't know he was documenting everything.

I found out later, after the Council tribunal, when the records were made public. Gareth had started keeping notes three days after I left. Dates. Times. Border failures. The exact coordinates where the wards collapsed. The number of rogues that breached the perimeter in the first week. The families that fled inward. The warriors who defected to neighboring packs.

He wrote it all down.

And at the bottom of every page, in his precise handwriting: *Timeline begins when Skylar Hill crossed the territory line.*

He knew.

Bradley didn't. Bradley was still convinced the wards were structural. He blamed the warriors. He blamed the patrol schedules. He blamed everything except the she-wolf he'd rejected on a ceremonial platform in front of three hundred witnesses.

But Gareth knew.

So one night, before dawn, while Bradley was still in the Luna quarters with Alyssa, Gareth sealed a petition to the Lycan Council and sent it through a neutral-territory courier.

Emergency intervention. Immediate review. Attached documentation.

He didn't tell Bradley.

If Bradley had found out, he would have stripped Gareth's rank. Sealed his wolf dormant. Maybe worse.

But Gareth sent it anyway.

I didn't know any of this when it happened. I was at Silvercrest, sitting in the guest quarters Dominic had given me, staring at the wall.

---

Simone and Alaina arrived on the third day.

I was in the courtyard when I smelled them. Simone's scent hit me first—sharp, familiar, like steel and pine. Then Alaina's, softer, layered with herbs.

I turned.

They were standing at the gate, travel-worn and dusty, their packs slung over their shoulders. Simone's claws were half-extended. Alaina's hands were gripping the strap of her healer's bag like she was holding herself upright.

They'd crossed three territorial lines to get here.

I walked toward them. My legs felt unsteady. I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs.

Simone saw me first. Her expression didn't change, but her claws retracted. She dropped her pack and closed the distance in three strides.

She didn't hug me. She just stood there, close enough that I could feel the heat coming off her skin, and said, "You look like hell."

I almost laughed. Almost.

Alaina reached us a moment later. She set her bag down carefully and touched my arm. Her fingers were warm. Steady.

"We're here," she said quietly.

I nodded. I didn't trust my voice.

Simone glanced around the courtyard, her eyes sharp, assessing. "So this is Silvercrest."

"Guest quarters are that way," I said, pointing. My voice came out rough. "Dominic said no expectations. No obligations."

Simone's eyebrow lifted. "Dominic?"

"Lycan Prince," I said.

Her other eyebrow joined the first. "You're on a first-name basis with a Lycan Prince?"

I didn't answer.

Alaina picked up her bag. "Let's get settled. Then we'll talk."

---

Simone lasted exactly four hours before she started irritating people.

She walked into the warrior training grounds that afternoon and stood at the edge, watching. Caden Voss—Dominic's Gamma—was running drills. He noticed her immediately. Hard not to. She wasn't trying to blend in.

After ten minutes, she called out, "Your left flank's exposed."

Caden stopped mid-command. Every warrior on the field turned to stare.

Simone didn't flinch. She just pointed. "There. Your formation leaves a gap. Any rogue with half a brain could punch through."

Caden's jaw tightened. He crossed the field toward her, his posture radiating authority. "And you are?"

"Simone Alexander. Gamma-ranked. Formerly of the Ashwood Pack." She met his gaze without blinking. "You want me to show you, or are you going to keep pretending I'm wrong?"

I watched from the guest quarters window. I should have intervened. I didn't.

Caden stared at her for three long seconds. Then he gestured toward the field. "Show me."

Simone walked onto the training grounds. She didn't ask permission. She just started repositioning warriors, her voice clipped and tactical, her movements precise.

Caden watched. His expression was unreadable.

By the end of the session, he was incorporating her adjustments.

By the end of the week, he'd stopped looking annoyed when she showed up.

---

Alaina unpacked her healer's supplies into the Silvercrest archive room and started working immediately.

She pulled every documented case of delayed wolf emergence she could find. She cross-referenced symptoms. She made lists.

Then she came to my quarters.

"You've been having tremors," she said. Not a question.

I nodded.

"Heat flashes?"

"Sometimes."

"Pressure behind your sternum?"

I pressed my palm against the scar on my ribs. "Yes."

Alaina set her notes on the table. "Skylar, these are pre-emergence symptoms. Your wolf isn't gone. She's waking up."

I stared at her. "I've been wolfless for over a decade."

"No," Alaina said gently. "You've been suppressed. There's a difference."

She explained it. The silver-blade trauma. The years of Bradley's Alpha tone. The bond-shock from the rejection. All of it had kept my wolf caged.

But the cage was cracking.

"When?" I asked.

Alaina hesitated. "I don't know. Could be days. Could be weeks. But it's coming."

I nodded slowly. I didn't know how to feel.

---

Dominic's war council convened two days later.

I was invited. Not as a guest. As a source.

I walked into the briefing room and found six ranked wolves seated around a table. Dominic at the head. Caden to his right. Four others I didn't recognize.

Simone was standing against the wall, her arms crossed. She gave me a single nod.

Dominic gestured to an empty chair. "Skylar."

I sat.

Caden slid a map across the table toward me. Ironveil's territory, marked with scout reports and rogue sightings.

"We need details," he said. His tone was professional. Skeptical. "Patrol routes. Ward vulnerabilities. Anything that helps us understand what we're dealing with."

I looked at the map. I knew every line. Every settlement. Every weak point.

I started talking.

I gave them patrol schedules. Ward-structure failures. Rogue ingress points along the eastern border. Settlement locations Bradley had never properly fortified.

Caden listened. He took notes. Halfway through, he started cross-referencing my information against Silvercrest's scout reports.

His expression shifted.

By the end of the briefing, he was leaning forward, his skepticism replaced by something sharper. Attention.

"This is more detailed than anything our network produced," he said slowly.

I met his gaze. "I lived there for seven years."

He nodded. Once. Respectful.

Dominic had been silent the entire time. Now he spoke.

"Incorporate her analysis into our defensive posture," he said to Caden. "Rogue activity is radiating outward from Ironveil's collapse. We need to be ready."

Caden nodded. "Yes, my lord."

Dominic's gaze shifted to me. Across the war-table. Steady. Asking nothing. Offering everything.

I looked back at the map.

The meeting ended. The wolves filed out. Simone pushed off the wall and followed them.

I stayed in my chair, staring at the map of the territory I used to protect.

Dominic stood. He didn't leave immediately. He just waited.

Finally, I looked up.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He inclined his head. "You earned it."

Then he walked out, leaving me alone with the map and the knowledge that, for the first time in seven years, someone had listened.
