When His Mistress Tried to Steal Our Newborn Son Chapter 1

I found out on a Tuesday.

Dominic had left his phone on the desk—unlocked, screen-up, buzzing against the marble. He was in the shower. I walked over to silence it because the sound was drilling into my skull, and I picked it up without thinking.

The name on the screen was Sarahi.

I almost put it down. Almost.

Instead, I opened it.

The messages went back two years. Maybe more. I scrolled slowly, the way you move through a room you already know is on fire—careful, almost calm, because some part of your brain hasn't caught up to what your eyes are reading. Pet names. Inside jokes. A photo she sent on a Wednesday afternoon when I had been three rooms away, eating lunch alone at the kitchen island, wondering why Dominic had seemed so distracted lately.

I set the phone down exactly where I found it. Screen-up. Buzzing.

Then I reached over and straightened the edge of a folder on his desk.

I didn't cry. I went to bed. I lay there in the dark with my eyes open and listened to the shower run, and when Dominic came out and slid in beside me and said goodnight, I said goodnight back. My voice was completely steady.

I didn't sleep.

Two mornings later, I sat on the bathroom floor with a pregnancy test in my hand.

The two lines were so clear they almost looked deliberate. I stared at them for a long time. The marble was cold through my robe. Outside, Manhattan was already loud—horns, a siren somewhere, the city's indifferent machinery grinding forward.

I pressed my palm flat against my stomach.

He was barely anything yet. A fact. A possibility. But I felt him like a decision I had already made.

"I've got you," I said quietly. "He doesn't. But I do."

That was the moment something in me stopped being sad and started being surgical.

I spent the next seventy-two hours moving carefully. I called our family attorney, Gerald Hatch, from my car with the windows up. I called my brother Easton from the Carlson family townhouse on the Upper East Side, which I drove to that same afternoon with one bag and no note left behind. I drafted my resignation from Shaw Industries in under an hour—three years of work reduced to two paragraphs, because I had always been better at this than I let on. I had the divorce papers drawn up by Thursday morning.

Dominic texted twice. I read both messages and did not respond.

On Friday, I walked into the Shaw Industries client suite at the Four Seasons, where Dominic was closing a deal with a group of investors I recognized from three charity galas and a board dinner I had attended on his behalf.

I didn't knock.

The room went quiet when I walked in. Dominic looked up from the table, and something moved across his face—surprise, then the particular controlled smoothness of a man who has spent years managing inconvenient situations. He was handsome in his charcoal suit. He had always been handsome. I had loved that face once with my whole chest.

I set the divorce papers and my resignation letter on the table in front of him.

The investors shifted in their seats.

"Braelyn." His voice was low, careful. A warning dressed as a greeting. "This isn't the time."

"I know," I said. "Sign the top document first."

He looked at the papers. Then he looked at me, and he smiled—that slow, confident smile that had once made me feel chosen. "You're upset. We'll talk tonight. Gentlemen, I apologize—"

"The papers, Dominic."

The smile stayed. He thought this was a performance. He thought I needed an audience to feel powerful, and that once the audience was gone I would come back to him the way I always had—quietly, without requiring anything.

He picked up the pen. He signed. Still smiling.

He didn't understand that he had just signed the death certificate of his own company. He didn't understand that the Carlson family's investment—the quiet, structural bedrock that had been holding Shaw Industries upright for years—was already being reviewed for withdrawal. He didn't understand that I had already spoken to Easton.

He didn't understand any of it yet.

I picked up both documents, thanked the investors for their time, and left.

That night, I called Easton from the townhouse. I sat at the kitchen table with a glass of water I didn't drink and told him everything. The affair. The pregnancy. The signed papers. The smile Dominic had worn while signing them.

There was a long silence.

Then my brother said, "Tell me what you need."

I told him.

By morning, the Carlson family's financial team was already in motion.
