Chapter 3

Martha knocked on the study door at half past ten.

I was in the hallway when it happened. I wasn't eavesdropping — I was just passing through, carrying a clean stack of Ezra's onesies toward the nursery. But the door was cracked, and voices carry in a quiet house.

I stopped. Set the onesies on the hall table. Listened.

Martha's voice was low and steady. She didn't rush. She told Elliott she had been watching Giselle for eleven days. She said Giselle's hands never shook when she thought no one was looking — not once, not even during the moments she pressed them to her chest and let her eyes fill up. She said the near-intrusions into Ezra's space didn't feel accidental. The timing was too consistent. The angles were too precise.

Then she said: "Two nights ago, Mr. Richards. I was standing just outside the nursery. Miss Munoz was leaning over the crib. I couldn't make out the words. But she was speaking directly to him. Low. Quiet. Like she didn't want the baby monitor to pick it up."

Silence.

Elliott's chair creaked. When he spoke, his voice had that particular quality — patient, careful, the voice he used when he was explaining something he considered obvious to someone he considered well-meaning but limited.

"Martha," he said. "Giselle has been through a great deal. Real trauma. I know it can look — I understand why you might read certain things into her behavior. But what you're describing is a grieving woman trying to connect."

"Sir —"

"I appreciate you coming to me. I do. But I'd ask you not to project your concerns onto someone who is already fragile." A pause. "That's all."

I heard Martha's footsteps cross the study floor. I picked up the onesies and kept walking.

I didn't look up when she passed me in the hallway. But I felt her stop for just a moment. A half-second. Then she moved on.

I put Ezra's laundry away and sat on the edge of the nursery chair. He was asleep in the crib, his chest rising and falling, one fist curled under his chin. The afternoon light came through the curtains in long pale strips across the floor.

I thought about what Martha said. Low. Quiet. Like she didn't want the baby monitor to pick it up.

I smoothed the back of my left hand with my right thumb. Once. Twice.

Then I got up, checked the monitor, and went to make a phone call.

---

Ezra napped for two hours. I locked the bedroom door, sat on the floor with my back against the bed, and called Andrea.

She picked up on the first ring.

"Talk to me," she said.

I kept my voice just above a murmur. I told her about Martha. About the study. About Elliott's voice doing that thing it does when he's already decided.

Andrea was quiet for a moment. I could hear her clicking through something on her end — her laptop, probably. She was always three steps ahead of the conversation.

"Okay," she said. "Here's where we are. The filing is complete. The asset-protection clause is locked. I've documented the infidelity provision of the prenup — that alone gives us significant leverage in the property division."

"And the other thing?"

"The family court contact." More clicking. "I spoke with him yesterday. Under domestic emergency provisions — given the documented evidence of an unsafe household environment for a minor — expedited filing is on the table."

I pressed my back harder against the bed frame. "How long?"

"If the scalding documentation holds," Andrea said, "two weeks."

Two weeks.

I sat with that for a moment. Outside the door, the house was quiet. Down the hall, Giselle was probably in the guest wing, arranging her skincare bottles, rehearsing her expressions in the good lighting by the vanity that I had pointed out myself.

"Harper." Andrea's voice was even. "You're doing everything right. Don't change anything. Don't tip anything."

"I know."

"Keep the monitor logs. If Martha is willing to write down what she observed —"

"She'll write it down," I said. I didn't know that for certain. But I knew Martha. I knew what it meant that she had gone to Elliott's study at half past ten and told him the truth even though she already knew he wouldn't hear it. Some people document things not because they expect to be believed, but because they refuse to let the truth go unrecorded.

"Good," Andrea said. "Two weeks."

We hung up.

I sat on the floor for another minute. The monitor crackled softly — Ezra shifting in his sleep, making the small sounds he made when he was dreaming.

Two weeks.

I got up, unlocked the door, and went to check on my son.

Down the hall, I heard Giselle laugh at something Elliott said. Light, musical, perfectly calibrated.

I didn't stop walking. I didn't tighten my jaw.

I just thought: *Twelve days. Maybe thirteen.*

And I kept my phone charged.
