Chapter 4

It happened on a Tuesday.

I was at the kitchen table, going through Ezra's feeding schedule, when Giselle drifted in wearing her silk sleep set even though it was past two in the afternoon. She moved the way she always moved in shared spaces — slowly, softly, as if her presence was a favor she was granting the room.

Martha was in the doorway. She'd been there for a few minutes already, folding a dish towel, not saying anything. Just watching.

I noticed that. I'd started noticing everything.

Ezra was in his bouncer on the kitchen island, making the small sounds he made when he was almost asleep. His eyes were heavy. His fist was curled against his cheek.

Giselle moved toward the stove. She reached across it for the pot — the large one, the one I'd filled earlier for pasta. It had been sitting on the back burner. Still boiling.

I looked up.

The pot tilted.

What happened next took maybe two seconds. It felt longer.

Martha moved first. She crossed the kitchen in three steps — fast, direct, nothing like the careful way she usually carried herself — and put her body between the spill and the bouncer. The water came down across her forearm. Some of it caught the edge of Ezra's sleeve.

Ezra screamed.

It was the kind of scream that does something to your spine. I was already moving, already around the island, already reaching for him. Martha had him against her chest, her burned arm wrapped around him, her face very still.

Giselle stood beside the stove with her hands over her mouth. Her eyes were full. The tears came fast, the way they always did with her — perfectly timed, perfectly placed.

'I'm so sorry,' she breathed. 'I didn't — it just slipped, I didn't mean —'

Martha turned to look at her.

She didn't raise her voice. She didn't have to.

'I saw your hands,' Martha said. 'They didn't slip.'

The kitchen went very quiet.

Giselle's face did something complicated. The tears kept coming, but underneath them, just for a half-second, something else moved. Then it was gone. She pressed her fingers harder against her mouth and made a small, broken sound.

I took Ezra from Martha's arms. He was still crying, his face red, his small fist clenched. I checked his arm — the sleeve had taken most of it, his skin only faintly pink at the wrist. I held him against my chest and felt his heartbeat, fast and frightened, gradually slow.

Martha's forearm was already blistering.

---

Elliott appeared in the doorway thirty seconds later. He took in the scene — Martha's arm, Ezra's crying, Giselle's tears — in one sweep.

Martha explained what happened. Her voice was the same voice she'd used in the study eleven days ago. Level. Specific. She said the pot had been on the back burner. She said Giselle had reached across the stove deliberately. She said she had been watching from the doorway and the movement had not been an accident.

She said all of this while holding her burned arm at her side, not looking at it.

Giselle wept harder. Her voice fractured on every syllable. Her hands — the hands that had been perfectly still through every performance I'd watched her give in this house — were trembling now.

Elliott looked at Martha. Then at Giselle. Then back at Martha.

I watched his face settle into its decision the way I'd watched it settle into decisions before. That particular stillness. The look of a man who has already chosen and is now simply locating the words.

'Martha.' His voice was quiet. Controlled. 'I'm going to need you to collect your things.'

Martha didn't blink. 'Sir —'

'You've created a hostile environment for a guest who is already in distress.' He said it the way he said everything he'd already decided — not cruelly, not loudly, just with the absolute authority of a man who had never once been told no by the people inside his own house. 'Effective immediately.'

Giselle made a soft sound. Something that might have been protest if you weren't listening carefully. It wasn't.

Martha looked at Elliott for one long moment. Then she looked at me.

I was still holding Ezra. His crying had quieted to small, hitching breaths against my shoulder. I looked back at Martha and I didn't say anything because there was nothing to say. We both knew it.

She picked up her cardigan from the chair by the door. She smoothed it over her arm — the burned one — without flinching. She walked out.

The front door closed behind her. Not a slam. Just a door closing.

I stood in my kitchen holding my son.

Elliott was already moving toward Giselle, his hand on her back, his voice dropping into that low, careful register.

I didn't look at him. I looked down at Ezra's face — his eyes closed now, his breathing evening out, one small fist curled against my collarbone.

Something finished in me. Not love — love had been gone for weeks. Something older than that. Some last, stubborn belief that the man I'd married was still in there somewhere, buried under the guilt and the obsession, waiting to surface.

He wasn't.

He never had been.

I carried Ezra to the nursery. I laid him down. I checked the monitor.

Then I sat on the floor with my back against the crib and I called Andrea.

She picked up on the first ring.

'It happened,' I said.

'Tell me everything.'

I did. All of it. Martha's arm. The timing. The hands that didn't slip. Elliott's voice finding its decision in the space of thirty seconds.

Andrea was quiet for a moment.

'Okay,' she said. 'We move the date up.'

I pressed my back against the crib. Above me, Ezra's breathing was slow and even through the monitor.

'How soon?' I asked.

'Soon enough,' Andrea said.

I closed my eyes.

Down the hall, I could hear Elliott's voice, low and soothing, telling Giselle it wasn't her fault.

I kept my phone charged.
