Chapter 2

The car pulled up at two in the afternoon.

I was in the kitchen, warming a bottle for Ezra, when I heard the crunch of tires on the driveway. I didn't move. I just stood there, holding the bottle under the running water, watching the steam rise.

Elliott came inside first. Then Giselle.

Two suitcases. Matching ones, pale gray with gold hardware. Someone had packed for a long stay.

Elliott touched my elbow. His voice dropped the way it always did when he wanted something he knew I wouldn't give. "Just until the ceremony," he said. "Two weeks. Maybe three."

I nodded. I kept my face very still.

Giselle stood in the entryway with her eyes downcast and one hand pressed flat against her collarbone, like she was physically holding her chest together. She was wearing a cream linen blouse, barely any makeup, her dark hair loose. She looked like a woman who had survived something.

She probably practiced that in a mirror.

"Harper." Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Thank you. For your extraordinary generosity. I know this isn't easy."

The phrase landed the way she intended it to — not as gratitude but as a reminder. You don't have a choice here. We both know it.

I smiled. "Of course," I said. "Let me show you where the extra towels are."

I gave her the full tour of the guest wing. I pointed out the good lighting by the vanity. I told her the shower pressure was stronger on the left handle. I was a perfect hostess.

That night, after Ezra was asleep, I sat on the edge of our bed and smoothed the back of my left hand with my right thumb. Slow. Methodical. I did it until my breathing evened out.

Then I picked up my phone and called Andrea.

"She's in the house," I said.

Andrea didn't say anything for a moment. Then: "Good. Keep your phone charged."

---

Within a week, Giselle had spread through the house the way water finds cracks — quietly, inevitably, until you look up and realize the damage is already done.

I found my robe on the guest bathroom hook one morning. The thick white one I'd had since our honeymoon. It was still warm.

I unhooked it. Folded it. Placed it back in my own bathroom without saying a word.

She drifted into the kitchen during Ezra's morning feeding three days in a row. She would appear in the doorway in a silk sleep set, hair loose, and make soft sounds over him. Cooing. Reaching out to touch his cheek without asking.

"He's so beautiful," she breathed one morning. Her fingers grazed his temple.

Ezra turned his face away from her hand. He was nine weeks old. He didn't know anything. But something in me noted it anyway.

"He's tired," I said. My voice was pleasant. "He needs to eat."

She withdrew her hand slowly, as if the withdrawal itself was a form of suffering.

In the evenings, she and Elliott stood near the study door and spoke in low voices. Not low enough. I could hear the shape of it from the hallway — her voice soft and grateful and wounded all at once, his voice careful, attentive, leaning in. He looked, in those moments, like a man who had finally found the thing he'd been searching for without knowing he was searching.

He looked the way he used to look at me.

I stood in the hallway for exactly four seconds. Then I went back to Ezra's room, picked up my phone, and opened the camera.

I photographed her cardigan draped over the back of my kitchen chair. Her skincare bottles lined up along the bathroom shelf that used to hold mine. Her shoes — three pairs now — arranged beside the guest wing door, spilling into the main corridor.

I photographed the robe hook. The empty space where my robe used to hang.

I emailed everything to Andrea with no subject line. Just the images, one after another.

Andrea replied four minutes later. One sentence.

*Perfect. Keep going.*

I put my phone face-down on the nightstand and fed my son.

Ezra ate with his eyes half-closed, his small fist curled against my wrist. His weight was solid and warm and entirely real. I looked down at him and felt something settle in my chest — not peace exactly, but something close to it. Clarity, maybe. The kind that comes after you've already made the decision and you're just waiting for the right moment to act on it.

From down the hall, I could hear Elliott laugh softly at something Giselle said.

I didn't flinch. I didn't tighten my grip on Ezra.

I just sat there in the quiet and thought: *Every day you give me more.*

And I kept my phone charged.
