Chapter 4

The first article appeared in Women's Wear Daily three weeks after my divorce was finalized. A half-page feature on emerging luxury brands, with a photo of me standing in the production facility, holding a leather sample. The headline read: "After Walking Away from Everything Ordinary, Soleil Chapman Builds Something Extraordinary."

Petra sent me the link with six exclamation points. I read it once, then forwarded it to my supplier contacts. Good press meant better terms.

The second article ran in Vogue Business. They called me a "case study in reinvention." They mentioned Herrera Capital's investment. They did not mention Jaden except in passing, a single line about my previous marriage that felt like an afterthought.

I was reviewing fabric swatches when the first anonymous blog post appeared.

Petra called me at nine PM, her voice tight with fury. "Have you seen it?"

"Seen what?"

"Someone posted on BlindGossip. They're saying you cheated on Jaden during the marriage. That you only married him for access to his money. That Daxton isn't an investor—he's your sugar daddy."

I set down the swatch I was holding. "Send me the link."

The post was detailed. Specific. It claimed I'd been having an affair for months before the wedding. It suggested the divorce was a cover story. It called my brand a "vanity project funded by romantic entanglement rather than legitimate business acumen."

The writing was vicious. The details were fabricated. But they were crafted just carefully enough to sound plausible to anyone who didn't know the truth.

"Soleil?" Petra's voice was sharp in my ear. "Are you still there?"

"I'm here."

"We need to respond. We need to—"

"No."

"What?"

"Let her," I said.

Petra went quiet for a moment. "You think it's Lennox."

"I know it's Lennox."

"Then we should—"

"Let her," I repeated. "Every story she plants makes me more visible. Every lie she tells puts my name in more searches. People will look me up. They'll see the real coverage. They'll see the product. She's doing my marketing for free."

Petra exhaled slowly. "You're terrifying."

"I'm efficient."

I hung up and went back to my swatches.

Two more posts appeared over the next week. Same anonymous channel. Same vicious detail. My phone lit up with messages from people I hadn't spoken to in years, asking if I was okay, offering support I didn't need. I thanked them politely and kept working.

On Thursday evening, I was in the conference room at Herrera Capital, reviewing our brand strategy presentation with Daxton. We had a pitch meeting with a major department store buyer in two days. The presentation was strong. The numbers were stronger.

Daxton closed his laptop and looked at me.

"I've assigned a security detail," he said.

I stopped mid-sentence. "Excuse me?"

"Personal security. They'll shadow your movements. Discreet, professional. You won't notice them unless you need to."

My jaw tightened. "I didn't ask for that."

"You didn't need to ask."

"Daxton—"

"The threats are escalating," he said, his voice level and completely unmoved by my tone. "You've had three anonymous posts in ten days. Your address was leaked on a forum yesterday. Someone left a package outside your building this morning."

I stared at him. "How do you know about the package?"

"Because I've been monitoring the situation since the first post appeared."

Heat flared in my chest. "I don't need babysitting."

"This isn't babysitting." He leaned forward slightly, his eyes locked on mine. "This is acknowledging reality. Someone is targeting you. Your pride is not more important than your safety."

The silence stretched between us. Outside the window, the city glittered in the dark. My hand moved to the base of my throat, fingers pressing against my pulse.

"I don't want to be managed," I said quietly.

"I'm not managing you." His voice softened, just barely. "I'm protecting you. There's a difference."

I held his gaze for another long moment. Then I looked away and opened my laptop. "Fine."

"Fine," he repeated.

We went back to the presentation. Neither of us mentioned it again.

The security detail was invisible. I never saw them, but I knew they were there. It should have felt intrusive. Instead, it felt like someone had locked a door I hadn't realized was open.

Daxton started appearing at my side at industry events. Not hovering. Not possessive. Just present. At a product showcase in SoHo, he stood three feet to my left while I spoke to a buyer. At a networking reception in the Meatpacking District, he handed me a glass of sparkling water without my asking. At a panel discussion on emerging brands, he sat in the third row and asked a question that made my answer sound even sharper than it was.

People noticed. I saw the glances. The whispers. The speculation.

I didn't correct anyone. Neither did he.

One afternoon, I was in the Herrera Capital conference room reviewing quarterly projections when I felt someone watching me. I looked up. Daxton was standing by the window, his expression unreadable, his eyes on me with a focus that made my breath catch.

My hand rose to the base of my throat before I could stop it.

He noticed. His mouth curved slightly at one corner.

I looked away first. I went back to my spreadsheet, my pulse loud in my ears.

It was the only time I had ever looked away first from anything.

That night, alone in my apartment, I stood by the window and looked out at the city. Somewhere out there, Lennox was planting her next story. Jaden was watching his company unravel. The world was moving through its ordinary chaos.

And I was building something that was mine.

I touched the base of my throat and felt my pulse, steady and certain.

I wasn't afraid.
